They can be given & taken away from you apparently,if people or admins don't like what yer' posting. At least that's what I gather through reading about all this reputation stuff. I still think none of it makes much sense. lol
I noticed this a long time ago...*(joined even before the date that it lists me as joining)
Most forums do this (and/or similar things) to encourage people to post. Granted, there may be other reasons, but more or less...if you get something for an action (however small), it tends to re-enforce or encourage that action. I think that's about all there is to it, really. ...though I can't really say for sure...

It's funny how most of us start to fret about a couple of little green dots 
.
I know I've had thoughts such as: "Wait, why does this person have more dots/points than me? What did I do wrong? Don't people like me? Are my posts always out of whack? How can I get as many points/dots as so-and-so? Why don't people like me? Am I going to get kicked off the forum?"
And then I log out because I have dinner plans with my friends... and I suddenly realize I have a life outside of CC.
(It's so easy to lose focus!!)

HA! I FIGURED IT OUT!! If you really want to know what the green bars are, be nice to me and maybe I will spill my secret 
I figured it out because I belong to another christian website that has something similar to those bars, and I just did some checking to see if I'm right.

Thank you for replying...I have noted your responses in a few threads now and you seem sad. You are so right in that you are no better than anyone else, but you are so very wrong in saying that you are not important. Are you saying that the God you believe in made a mistake? that he lies? Think on His Word and ask, how can I believe that? you my dear, dear boy, are fearfully & wonderfully made, you are so very precious and He has plans for you...plans for you to be happy and succeed...You are a young man who i think is not living in the belief of Gods promises, they are for others...not you? Gods promises ARE for you. I can tell this maybe true? by the way you keep putting yourself down and saying how worthless and insignificant you are. This is not true. The latter is lies and lies are not of God. You need to struggle up to your feet & stand up tall against this...if you cannot, then lean on fellow brothers and sister and we will help you? but do not, in the name of Jesus Christ, settle for a defeated life. As I write this on Good Friday, as we remember our Lords sacrifice for us, the price he paid, I want to remind you...He died for YOU so you could be free and live in victory. God Bless you, <><
