Hey everyone,

What was the most influential piece of criticism you've ever received, and how did you respond to it?

A recent happening on the threads reminded me of my own--a prison inmate with LWOP (life without parole) who once wrote me, "Kim, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart? You only correspond with me to use me, and you only help people in order to benefit yourself." (One interesting thing about trying to talk to people in extreme situations about God is the challenging way they will pick apart your character.) And, interestingly, I had just declined his request to send him money.

Something that's always intrigued me is an incidence in the Bible where a man named Shimnei curses David, and as David's men prepare to kill him, David tells them to let him speak, because maybe he has something worthy to say as far as pointing out David's personal faults. (Interestingly, on his deathbed, David tells Solomon to annihilate the guy, but that's something for another thread.)

This is what I've learned to do in the face of criticism--I take it to the people who know me best and ask them, "Is this who I really am? Do you believe this applies to me? Will you pray about it and tell me what God's trying to do with me in this area?" I go to the people I trust the most who aren't afraid to tell it like it is, because if I listen to just anyone, I'll never get anywhere.

I also often find myself in a no-win situation (people either tell me I'm too frank or else too timid), so I decided long ago that all I can do is be me, try to let God improve me daily, and if I make a few friends along the way, great; if not, well, we're never alone with God, right? I once asked God whom I should listen to when it came to criticism because I don't want to miss something important He's trying to teach me. After a lot of fasting and prayer, I believe God has told me that when someone corrects me in gentleness, He is behind it, and that's when I've learned to really pay attention.

How about the rest of you? Do you have healthy ways of dealing with criticism (please share!)? Or are you still trying to get over something, or do you not know where to start? (Maybe we can help each other.)

As I was thinking about my ideas for this thread, what breaks my heart most are when I hear about people who have grown up or been in relationships in which they are criticized all the time. Maybe they grew up being constantly told by someone, "You're... ugly, fat, stupid, lazy, etc." I always want to give them a hug and tell them what a beautiful, special person they are, even if we're both wiping away tears.

Where do you stand when it comes to being criticized, and, if this applies, how have you learned to overcome it, or allow it to make you better?

(As singles, I do think this is an important topic--for those of us hoping to marry someday, handling criticism in a Godly manner will be an important part of maintaining a marriage.)

God bless and thank you for your thoughts! :)

I think I have been debated more than criticized on here. No one has insulted my character or anything.

I can't see anyone criticizing your character, Arwen, whether here or in real life. :) Your posts are always well-thought out and considerate.

I wasn't talking about just here on CC, though, but rather, life in general.

Well arwen83 I think you're a Ninny-pots and a Shanty-wagon. So there =P

Seoul, a person can be both too Frank and too Shy. When I was in the Navy we had some people on my ship who were hard to engage in conversation cause they were shy but, when they did say something it was always blunt and loud, making everyone involved feel really awkward.

Also when someone grows up hearing that they are ugly and all those other things you said, they can wind up with some pretty nasty coping mechanisms and personality disorders. I think that is why having a healthy Father figure and supportive environment is so important.

Once upon a time I was in a relationship with someone with whom I could not win for losing. They believed that if I gave a compliment I was lying and everything else was a judgemental criticism. So I tried to put my words ind bubble wrap and carefully considered everything that came out. But it was to no effect, because she had received so much pain all of her life that she felt it always, even when it wasn't there. Being with her was like, navigating a minefield. No matter how slow I went, or how methodically I poked, I was simply not going to miss saying or doing the wrong thing. In such a situation I found that we were either simply okay or completely broken. We never passed the threshold from Okay to Good or simply happy.

Thank you, that is a very meaningful thing to say. Not always considerate though; I need to be honest with myself.

In real life... depends on who i criticizing. If it is my parents or brothers, or close friends, I might feel on guard, misunderstood. I'm pretty self-aware so if it is regarding something about myself that I already know, and am ashamed of or struggle with, then I can get pretty defensive. Because I KNOW, I don't want to be told something that I already have thought about many times. I will normally become more private about things that have been criticized in the past, to save me the grief. Which sucks cus I seclude myself, but a little self-preservation is always a good time :P

If it people that I don't know, I'll get cocky and be like, sure, I don't care what you think of me. You don't know me. I know who I am. But later reflect on what they had said, and look inward to see if there is some truth to their criticism. Sometimes I do find truth, sometimes I don't. But always surveying myself, which would be good if I used it constructively to self-improve, instead of feeling defeated by my shortcomings.

Wow, Liamson. Now that you mention it, I HAVE met a few people like that... Gives me a whole new perspective on the topic -- thank you.

And (this is just my opinion from my own experience, as I'm sure you found too), the only thing I could do in that situation is walk away. Praying, of course.

But walking.

Quite briskly at that. (I would say run, but I wouldn't want to make it too obvious...)

My heart is a bit fragile on this, due to certain things that have happened somewhat recently. But I will try to answer as honestly and as best as I can.

I am my worst/hardest/toughest critic. It is hard for me to take criticism, even constructive criticism, because I'm hard on myself enough as it is, so when someone else points something out, it makes me feel defensive. I had someone just rip into me on criticisms last summer. They weren't constructive. They were mean-spirited and angry. They were destructive in the sense that they ripped apart my heart. I am STILL healing, even though I know that what they said wasn't true. I know it myself, and all the people close to me reaffirm that, but I have an unfortunate bad habit of taking a lot of stuff to heart that really should just roll off my shoulders.

With that said, I can take criticism when it's done lovingly and gently. Sit down with me, one on one. Show me Scripture if you feel it's necessary. Be firm. But be gentle.

Maybe someday I'll grow thicker skin. :)

Liamson, I am nowhere near as extreme in rejecting compliments/kind words as your ex, however I do that to some degree. It's not that I grew up being told, in words, that I was ugly or unwanted. It was more the way I was treated (or not treated), or how I perceived I was being treated. I have grown away from that belief since I graduated high school, that I must not be beautiful or valuable, but I will admit that it is hard to unlearn. I was even trying to unlearn it in high school, but my belief, even though false, kept getting reinforced. I hope I am never that girl to someone (rejecting anything and everything no matter what their intentions), but I guess my point is that I can somewhat relate to her.

I don't really take criticism too seriously because I know I'm a hard person to really know. And I really can't be hurt by what doesn't know me.

But the people who really know me can really hurt me too. When they say things like I wish you were more like the old you or more deep or more thoughtful, tend to take it personally.

But I am not my body, or the sum of its parts. To criticize me for what I look like or what color my hair is, says more about the person saying such things than me.

I have been highly criticized over the course of my life, and I've been critical of many people who have crossed my path. The harshest thing that has been said to me was probably that I deserved the things that have happened to me. That being in abusive relationships, being raped, and the 6 times I've almost died were God's punishment for my previous lifestyle. I was also told that "there was no God for me" because of my sins. I've had many, many atrocious things said to me, and it has taken me a long time to heal from most of them. However, because of how I've been treated in the past, I refuse to treat people in like manner.

OH MY, that is horrible to hear!! Well you wouldn't be hearing that stuff from any of us CC'ers (I would very much hope)!

I'm sure there are people on CC who would tell me that I deserved what has happened to me. I'm quite sure.

Yeah, I know some people perpetuate what was done to them.

Like Parents who beat their Children, were beat as children.

But much like you, I have chosen to live a quiet life because I grew up in a loud home with threats anger and screaming about everything. The threats never materialized and the anger was never truly provoked. It was silly, so I have no tolerance for it.

I'm proud of you for being who you are and letting God lead your life. :)

My mom had very high expectations of me and a very critical nature (I loved her very much even so). I have no doubt that this was the reason for my childhood shyness and the whole overachiever thing.

As I said in another thread, it's not so much what you say as how you say it. I don't mind correction given in love and genuine concern. What I can't abide is the person who criticizes others for entertainment or to make themselves look better.

I benefit much more from praise than criticism.

I get enough criticism from my own mind as it is, I don't need it double from other people too. If people are not gentle with me with their words during a vulnerable time, it takes a lot of work for me to be able to forgive them.

Whoa! What's with the salty language? Is this a late-night HBO special or something?

Crazy Americans and their lingo :P

I have no idea what you're talking aboot, eh?

All criticism serves a purpose, whether you think it's legitimate or not. If you feel the criticism is without merit, but it makes your blood boil a little, then it's just another opportunity to practice being graceful and Christ-like. It's in our human nature to fail at this, but the skill of being Christ-like will only grow stronger if we actively practice it. We can't practice it if we aren't given opportunities.

I think I have been called every bad thing you can imagine. I quit caring long long ago. I tell people have at it. call me what you want to I don't care.

As a Bible believing christian, when you witness the hard truths of the gospel ( sin, repent, sodomy is an abomination, etc.) people will hate you and lash out verbally or even manifest demonically. Remember that ALL those who live Godly in CHRIST JESUS will suffer persecution, and MARVEL NOT when the world hates you for they hated THE LORD JESUS first. That which is highly esteemed among men is an abomination unto the LORD (LUKE 16 verse 15) so in other words ...... your life is not a popularity contest. I have been yelled at and wrongly accused, and kept silence, not saying a word in response, the Bible says vengeance is mine, I will repay saith the LORD ( HEBREWS 10 verses 29,30) I pray that GOD woulld protect me from or separate me from that individual, or that GOD would repay them for their evil. It is awesome to see GOD answer these prayers, and THE LORD has had me being attacked to strentghen my faith. The more persecution you go through the stronger you get at using the shield of faith ( EPH chpter 6 verses 12 to 16 ) to fend off the fiery darts of the wicked. Praise JESUS. Then you really dont care about being verbally abused anymore at all, and you actually thank JESUS for the trials that strengthen you. Like the bunny says it gets easier to the point were you dont care, and since Im called to warn people Im reminded every day that LIFE IS NOT a popularity contest. THE LORD JESUS BLESS you saints.
