Time limit lock on threads

I've been on a few forums where if a thread is a certain amount of time old, then you cannot reply to it.

I think it's great to look back at old threads, but maybe there should be a time limit, and if you want to talk about that topic again, simply make a new topic, add more discussion, and link to the old one so if people want to read previous responses, they can.

It just seems a little ridiculous when threads that are 4 years old are getting bumped to the front page. Why not make a new topic with members that you know are still active? :)

We have Ugly to moderate responses to dead threads. :p

Honestly, that's not a bad idea. Some people neglect the time stamp on the last post made. An automated system to close a thread after a given amount of time would be great to sidestep bumping dead horses.
 
"Bumping dead horses" - phraseology sounds a little weird. :-/

Let me rephrase: It would be ideal in avoiding bumping inactive threads.
 
There actually is a reason to not close old threads relating to maintaining our Google search ranking.

Blasted necessary evil! But how would closing a thread affect the page ranking, if the URL/domain is still valid?

You guys could always resort to Google Bombs. :p

The problem is most of the time its a new member who has no clue about the dates. Wish we could have a mandatory tutorial on how to avoid being annoying on CC. Such as all caps, 20 page posts, reviving old threads, haha.. now that would be nice.

I don't tolerate, i just use ignore. And don't get amused when people do things purposely that i find annoying.

locking a thread wont actually "hurt" search rankings. all you are doing is locking people from posting. not deleting it.

really needs an Autolock honestly.

The irony is that I'm posting on a super old thread (this one) to ask if there's a way we can lock super old threads...still nothing? Not that they are deleted, but just locked, like wisebeardman said.

If there really isn't, I'll stop being a bother, but there's got to be a way. There's as time limit option on polls. Surely there could be a mandatory time limit lock option on threads.

The only thing is, that guy reminds me of Ritter, because he often uses old pictures for his avatar. SO every time I see it I think of Ritter abusing animals, LOL!
 
I've been on many discussion boards: political, conspiracy, religious, music... I've never seen a time lock. Good for old members tired of seeing their same old discussions but not so good for first time observers. For them it's a new discussion that they may have opinions about and they may never see a discussion like that again.

The same topics are constantly having new threads made anyways. So not like it matters.
