I've named a good number of dogs over the years...go by their personality or whatever comes to mind when I look at them

the other thing I do, is give them their own last name

Kodiak, Siberian Husky, became Kodiak Kode

another dog, long haired, was Biscuit with the last name Rugbrush...Biscuit Rugbrush

don't ask :sneaky:

All our pets have "real" names, at my mother's insistence. She never would have pets named traditional pet names like Fido, Mittens... Name the cat Carlyle or Spike. Name the dog Hugo. Give the poor thing a real name.

But I am reminded of an old Garfield comic...
LYMAN: "Yeah we had four cats when I was a kid."
JON: "What were their names?"
LYMAN: "Let's see... There was Cat, Cat, Cat and Cat."
JON: "No names?"
LYMAN: "What's the point naming an animal that won't come when you call it?"
JON: "Good point."
