there's a NASCAR track in the Charlotte area, yes?
i think so, because years ago i took the kids down for my parents' 50th anniversary
and we stayed at a hotel across the street from the track.
there were races going on, and most of the folks in the hotel were there for them.
met some of the nicest people!

i like the story of the origin of NASCAR...
and yeah...that's all i've got. :)

Sadly, there are a number of NASCAR folks who only watch to see the wrecks............beats me........that sort of mentality is beyond my understanding. Last night's race was approaching a record for green laps run........no wrecks..........when the first big one happened........

I was praying just before the wreck that they would set the record.........sadly, such is the beast known as NASCAR......eventually there will be a wreck. I pray before every race that no one will be seriously injured. But I sometimes think my prayers are far outnumbered by those praying to see the "BIG ONE."

Do you know who your grandfather crewed for? That's kinda cool having a family member involved with NASCAR.
To get back to you on this, I asked my pops about this. Turns out gramps was only ever an usher at Daytona. Grandpa's brother is the mechanic, and because he let gramps come along with him a few times this is why gramps thinks he's a NASCAR pit crew member lol.

hope the race is good and no post-race drama for the non-fans to make fun of.

I was a fan during the 50's and 60's, but not much today.
When NASCAR began, one of the requirements was that the car were STOCK, only super tuned.
They had to have the same specs as what the average buyer could go and buy at the Chevy, Ford, Olds, Chrisler, or HUDSON dealer.
When they started building pure racing car that were totally different from those sold to the public, I lost interest.
I know, I'm old, and that was before most of you were born.

I vaguely remember my Dad taking me to see the Daytona 500 in 1950 or 1951.
Back then they raced on the beach.
If you want to see REAL NASCAR racing, check out some of the old videos.

Overall, pretty good race..........would have been a great finish had the caution not came out on the last lap........still.......

NO REAL BIG WRECKS.............and no temper tantrums that I saw..........

I heard Jeff Gordon retired..or is that just a rumor?
I just saw on the news Sunday that Tony Logano wins his first Daytona 500. They also mentioned that Jeff Gordon was involved in a multi-car crash on the final lap in his final start in a race he has won three times (1997, '99 and 2005). The four-time champion announced before the season this would be his final full-time season in Cup.

Love F1 racing.

Nascar is not popular here in SA but from what I have seen it is not that difficult going in circles or am I over simplifying it?

:) Not really...........go out somewhere near where you live......find an oval track.....get 42 of your best buds to go with you...line up.....take off.......and drive for 500 miles at 200 MPH without killing each other....... :)

Pretty simple........drive fast, turn left, repeat

I like the tactical racing of F1, but I guess the speed and the sound of the engines will get your adrenaline going

Suppose it is all about what one grows up watching. Formula 1 is ok, but I do not enjoy watching it nearly as much as NASCAR. As for being "tactical," or the amount of strategy involved, there is a great deal of strategy involved in racing NASCAR. The technology alone pretty much requires Teams to have Mechanical Engineers to build and set up the race cars. So much computerization involved now, it is really quite amazing.

The cars are so finely tuned and balanced that something as simple as a 1/4 pound too much or too little air in one tire can upset the entire balance of the car. Strategy comes into play during Pit Stops.....and all the decisions made there.....as well as on track where drivers have to know and understand what their car can and can not do. And so much more.

Yes, I would expect much of this applies to Formula 1 also.............why I said it probably comes down to what one grew up watching........... :)
