As I understand it, popcorn prophecy is similar to popcorn prayer. One person begins and later other people chime in with their word of knowledge/picture that relates to another person in the group but there's no set order of things. There may be long periods of silence and/or people sometimes praying/prophesying over the top of each other (due to them speaking at the same time). The fact remains, popcorn prayer is just prayer without any set order of who's going to pray next. But popcorn prophecy, I don't believe prophecy works like that, nor do I think such a method of delivery is beneficial to those involved.
i think you just described every web-forum or chat room . . .
who will post next?

Personally I don't feel the urge to play the prophet; I'm a simple guy. I just pray for enlightenment of God's Holy Spirit and humbly ask if He will speak to me through His Word. Apart from that you can never know if it's really the Spirit talking to you anyway. So even if I was be plagued by 'prophetic' dreams and visions, I would still test them through scripture.

But if the authors of the Bible had that same thinking we wouldn't have the scriptures we have today.

True, but even the 'authors' tested what they wrote with already existing scripture, like the books of Moses. That canon is closed though, so nothing that's being 'revealed' to us now will be a part of the Bible anymore, we can just TEST it, through scripture.
