Hubby's (John) stepfather lost his sense of smell in the war. (WWII.) When hubby was little (1950's), every family had a can of used Crisco (vegetable based lard) on a shelf for frying. But, lots of Crisco cans, so it was also often used in at men's work benches to store stuff.
His mom was out to mass early one Sunday, so Dad got nice and made breakfast. (I don't remember if it was French Toast or pancakes.) Something stunk. Little Johnny and his older brother were complaining about the smell, but Dad made them breakfast and they WOULD eat it!
Mom came home from mass and yelled at him while she opened up the windows. It wasn't grease. It was turpentine. If she hadn't come home, they would have had to eat it.
