That's what I gather from the video, that as long as you have the locked mag you can have pistol grip and adjustable stock, which is pretty awesome and the video is dated Feb. 2017.
But I just found the AR that I will buy (if I ever get around to buying it)... Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22 .22lr with 10rd mag.
Its perfectly legal still in CA since rimfires don't fall under the assault weapon law.

I think I found that deal, except it went up to $439 (it said as $399 earlier). Unfortunately its not CA legal, so it can't even be shipped here. But its ok because there is the S&W M&P sport II /223/5.56 CA legal model for $449.

Since I'm finding out that 22lr isn't exactly the most reliable ammo, I'm setting my sights on an affordable .223/5.56, plus I've seen some videos where they refer to the .22 as being just a practice gun and not a "real" AR... that recoil though!
And I did figure out the law about california "assault weapons" and it confirms what was in that video I posted earlier (as long as it has a locked magazine requiring the gun to be opened to reload, you can have a pistol grip, adjustable stock and flash suppressor. Without a locked mag, the gun can't have those features)

Some rimfire ammo can be "iffy"... I have found that CCI MiniMags are as close to flawless, performance wise, as you can get. I've had good luck with others, as well, but I can definitely recommend the MiniMags.
Usually, I only have problems with the cheaper "bulk" ammo, as far as any misfires, etc.

That last one - the animated gif shows a bump-fire stock. I'm undecided about those for home defense. On one hand, I tell myself that if I'm at the point of firing off a round at an intruder, then a dozen or more following close behind ain't a bad idea. On the other hand, I remember the saying "there is a lawyer attached to every one of those bullets", and that it might be easier to legally defend shooting an intruder once versus...a lot.
I think you are right. Shooting more than is necessary to stop the threat would probably be looked on as "intent to kill" instead of "intent to stop the threat".
That is why I wanted to get a suppressor for my "ideal" AR. ANY firearm discharged in an enclosed space will damage your hearing. Even the "lowly .22"...
But, as was mentioned, if I was in the situation where I felt lethal force was necessary, I don't think I'd be worried about my hearing being damaged.
I read a story once about an undercover drug officer that was in a car doing a deal, when the three bad guys in there with him decided he was a cop, and were about to shoot him. He pulled out his "hideout gun", which happened to be a short barrel .44 magnum, and managed to end the confrontation with three shots. He was left totally, permanently deaf from that encounter, but he was happy to still be alive.
