this thread reminded me of something we did in one of my college classes.

the professor told us, "everybody close your eyes. now.. point to wherever north is. open your eyes."

everybody was pointing to different directions. opposite directions. some towards the same direction. but the question was... who was right?

then, she pulled out a compass. she then pointed north because the compass pointed north.

she said, "you can believe all day long north is that way, but the truth is.. it is this way."
When I was training for my SAR work, we had to follow our compass and some points on a map to find specific flags. It was an exercise in map reading as well as in compass use.
The only compass I owned at the time was specifically to be used on a table reading a map, which I didn't know when I bought it, so when I tried to use it in my hand it wasn't accurate. I was really struggling to find my flags. Another volunteer who had finished the course, loaned me his and I started again. It only took me 15 minutes to find all 6 of my flags using the right compass. I was so embarrassed by this rookie mistake, that I studied direction for months, so that now all I have to do is close my eyes and I can find North, and my teammates call me the human compass.....although they still tease me about that compass.

Often times we try to follow the wrong compass, by following what the "norm" is. If we keep our sights focused on "True North" we won't stray.

I heard it and I dont believe it. You're making things up. I'm losing no fight against you, because you don't even understand or care about what i say. Oh you're so happy you and your church friends are ganging up on the little nonbeliever! That'll do some good for God!
You may not believe it, but we TRULY love you. We are just as broken and in need of a Savior as you are. The Gospel is that God wrapped Himself in flesh, Jesus Christ, was born of a woman, suffered, was crucified, died, and rose to life 3 days later. Confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord. Believe in your heart that His Father raised Him from the dead, and you will be saved.

Then the Holy Spirit will reveal to you the things in your life that you need to change.

NOTHING would make us happier than to call you a sister in Christ!

This all reminds me of the unfortunate story of the British entrepreneur John Tate and his compasses. Sometime back in the mid-1800s a small-time British manufacturer named John Tate decided to go into the business of making compasses. He set up a factory, installed the machinery, hired some workers, and began turning out his first compasses. He had just completed his first batch of 500 compasses when someone finally pointed out that he had forgotten to mark which end of the compass was north. The compasses worked fine; you just didn't know which way was north and which was south. Needless to say poor Mr. Tate's compasses didn't sell; Tate went bankrupt, the factory closed, and the workers were laid off. But his memory lives on, since that time any compass where you're not sure which end is north and which is south has been known as a 'Tate's compass'.

The moral of the story, of course, is that he who has a Tate's is lost. And, a misinterpreted Bible can be a Tate's Compass.
thanks for the story, willie! i will now pocket it as an illustration i can use for future lessons/sermons :D

Debatable, but I don't care what you believe and I'm not in mood dabate you, I'd probably get a little nasty and well, I'll respect the site's rules.

Its not a matter of belief, its a matter of what the Word says and the Bible says homosexuality is wrong, period.

He didn't really give a reason did He.

He didn't give a reason for the laws about what to eat and not either. Now we know many of the "banned" animals are more prone to carry dangerous diseases / parasites than the ones that are allowed. Maybe God simply knows it is bad for humans, and that could be a reason enough, even if it wasn't referred to as an abomination. (I'm pretty sure that if the OT laws were written today there would be a law or two about sugar intake...)

Interesting. Does your stomach turn when someone takes two lolipops instead of one like they were told? Now, Im not really Christian though a friend specifically asked me to at least listen to believers, I don't try to convince anyone to be pro gay, I'm not complaining because I could only pick male or female and I'm Non-Binary because I respect your beliefs and understand you dont want a 'worldly" person talking about what's right or wrong according to the bible. No, I don't like your beliefs in this erea. No, I don't like most of people here. Too many Christians are to black and white and never grey, but hey I guess they're supposed to be black or white.I hate a lot of your views, but not you or your religion. On another platform I'd more inclined to fight you, even so you have a life, as do I, so a pointless debate isn't worth, you won't make mee see homosexuality as bad, I won't make you accept it.

So you're not a Christian, you dont like Christian beliefs and you'd be combative except the rules wont let you. Soooo why are you here?!

Yes, but you have to understand that since God is believed in, and not someone we can prove exists, (we can't prove God or disprove God)We can not use the bibles rules as the morals for everyone. To you homosexuality it is awful because it isn't how God wants it, but I dont really care what your beliefs says so you shouldn't expect me to feel bad for fighting his design.

So...

in essence you want us to totally accept your world view but we're wrong to have our own views.

I never said it's not against the bible. I said it's not harmful. At least not directly to others. You believe it's harmful because it's not supposed to be like that. I knowthe bible well.
If

you knew the Bible as well as you claim to you'd be a Christian now wouldn't you? You'd believe in God. So apparently you dont know it as well as you claim to.

I remember I passage from the bible where god said if a man rapes a woman he must marry her. No, but being gay is the worst.

Let's remember that rape is a direct assault on another human and being gay doesn't affect others.

If you know the Bible so well you'd understand the statement you just made is foolish.

The bible cannot be proven or disproven. I'm sorry but even most Christian scientists will tell you that.

Most Christian scientists? Rather a blanket statement don't you think? There are many scientists that believe in ID that are not Christians. Many scientists down through the ages believed that believing in God was a must to understand science. You need to do more research outside your narrow views.

Just be sure you clearly enunciate the moral:

"He who hesitates, is lost."

I'm here for my friend's peace of mind.
Can

you explain that comment? What has this forum got to do with your friend or their peace of mind? If you wanted your friend to have peace of mind you'd guide them to the Bible. Otherwise let them be,you're doing nothing to help them.

No, you do. I know both arguments, and yes I think a higher power is more likely but they can't prove its your God, after all you believe faith needs no proof.

It wasn't literal. Because it was a middle ground we agreed on instead of church.
