...that's fine as long as he doesn't try to snatch my roasted peanuts in the shell. Honey Roasted Nuts are acceptable if consumed in moderation.

Had a really nice dinner....asked about veal at our local grocery store was in the mood to make Veal Picatta for dinner but alas they were out of veal, however I saw a very thin cut of sirloin steak and thought to myself.......self lets give this a try so I bought it came home couldn't find my meat pounder so instead I baggied my hammer and pounded away with the hammer held sideways.....works good.... Tourist had never had capers before so introduced him to them.

So dinner was steak picatta with a baked potato and Rappini yum.......I am keeping my eyes open for veal though as it is a tad more tender than steak.....

So what did you guys have for dinner?

but my dad loved it...ordered it in restaurants all the time.

we once rented a house on a large property,
and there was a barn that had been used to raise calves for veal.
i kid you not--the inside of that barn was nicer than the inside of the house...
and it was a pretty nice house!!

dinner tonight...homemade chicken corn chowder, salad and fresh baked bread.
when the high temp is 17, soup is what's for dinner. :)

Mark's maternal grandparents came to the states from Hungary, and two weeks ago
i decided to make (legit) Hungarian Gulyás...with r-e-a-l spätzle.
the noodles were a big hit....

I made homemade vegetable soup............crackers and sharp cheddar slices.

Really enjoyed it......and on a cold day/night, it hits the spot.

Sure.....it is really good (well, in my opinion)

Adjust recipe to number being served.

4 Servings:

Take a large soup pan (at least 4 quart size)

3 Large Idaho potatoes peeled and cut into chunks put in pan

6 Carrots peeled and cut into small chunks put in pan

1/2 Head fresh cabbage cut up and put in pan (depends on how much one likes cabbage)

1/2 Red onion diced and put in pan

1 can Diced tomatoes (may use Rotel if you want it to have a kick)

2 Beef flavored/or Chicken flavored Bullion cubes

salt and pepper as desired

fill with water until all ingredients are just covered........bring to a boil, lower heat and allow to slow cook for 1 1/2 hours (until carrots are tender)

For Homemade Chicken Veggie soup add 1 or 2 boneless/skinless chicken breasts, and after all is pretty much done, take out the breasts and shred them and add back to soup.

For Homemade Beef Veggie soup: add 1/2 pound to 1 pound Beef tips and cook everything in slow cooker to assure tips are tender.

You can play around with the ingredients. Sometimes, when they are fresh, I add slices of yellow squash. Can add cauliflower or broccoli too........but the above is the "Old Stand By" recipe I serve during the cold winter months.

it's really a think soup.
here's Mark's 'anya's' recipe:
(dutch oven mandatory?)

chop 4-5 onions and sauté in oil till caramelized
add two chopped garlic cloves, cook slightly
2-3 quarts stock or water or combination of the two
2-3 lbs beef cubes, on the small side
4 lg carrots, pennied
2 parsnips, chopped
4 potatoes (which i have to add because Mark's paternal grandparents emigrated from Germany)
S&P
1/3 c sweet Hungarian paprika
1-3 t caraway seeds (to taste)
bay leaf

put the (covered) dutch oven in the oven (325 degrees) for 2 or 3 hours
remove, add 2 diced tomatoes, put back in oven for 1/2 hour
if it looks like the liquid is disappearing when you add the tomatoes, add some water
serve over noodles--prepare to be too full for cheesecake

mine came out not as good as Anya's, hence my need of help?

i think anya is Hungarian for mother, but this is Mark's grandma's recipe?
she died when Mark's mom was 4, but the written recipe says, Anya's gulyás.
who knows how many mothers ago!

You need to slow down Wolfgang Puck, and first tell me about this "preheating of an oven", I've heard so much about?

Tonight, before I pass out from being overexposed to "old age," I am going to put on to slow cook 15 Bean Soup. :)

Directions: Seriously? 1) Crock pot.......2) Bag of 15-Bean Soup Beans....and flavor packet that comes with them....3) Water...4) 1/2 Red onion diced.....5) Salt and Pepper as desired......6).... Turn on Crock pot.....7)....Depending on the exact hour you start cooking it..........wake up about 4AM starving to death from the wonderful aroma of that heavenly dish cooking.......... :)

Will serve as Friday evening meal........along with mashed potatoes and Mack 'n' Cheese, and cornbread.

really, though? i often think y'all don't cook because cooking for one...
it seems like so much work, doesn't it?
in summer when Mark and the kids used to go to the lake for a couple of weeks,
i lived on hard boiled eggs and Cheerios. cooking a whole meal (and cleaning it up)
just never seemed worth it?
bet you cook for your little one, though. ♥
