During my menstrual period I find that I feel down. I've heard of other ladies who experienced this, but I wanted to know if I can take something natural for this issue or maybe there's something I shouldn't be eating. I don't suffer from depression, so I don't think I need to see a doctor. But I'm feeling down a few days out of the month and I'm really sensitive during this time period :(. Does anyone have any suggestions?

You are lucky. I'd say just give yourself a break and make sure to get out.

I've noticed that when any girl near me is having her menstrual period, I feel very frightened.
Is this normal?
Is there anything I can take for this?

: )

You're experiencing mood swings because the estrogen in your body has increased. That's why you're more sensitive. Here's a list of things that will help.

Vitamin A has been shown to reduce the symptoms of PMS. Make sure you take the water soluble version of this.

Vitamin B6 reduces bloating since it is a natural diuretic. It can also help with estrogen levels that may be imbalanced during a menstrual period.

Vitamin E can help relieve soreness and tender breasts. It also regulates hormone levels, and can reduce irritability and depression. Make sure you take the water soluble version of this.

Vitamin D will also assist with depression.

Pantothenic acid is a natural nutrient that is commonly used to reduce stress.

Calcium and magnesium are naturally powerful substances that help reduce cramping and muscle tension. These nutrients can also reduce stress.

Chocolate will help relieve tension, mood swings, and the like.

If you're not taking a multivitamin, do so. If you think that you'll be getting pregnant within the next 10 years, I would recommend a prenatal vitamin instead. It contains more Folic Acid which is required to cause the neutral tube to close. If the neural tube won't close you may have a spontaneous abortion or the baby will be born with Spina Bifida.

Maybe I should take my own advice because I feel like crawling in a hole and staying there until Jesus returns.

Men aren't typically made with the fortitude for women's emotions. :) It's understandable that you would feel wary of our illogical mood swings. Just be patient, comforting, and a little less taxing. ;-)
If it's any consolation, not all women go through the mood swings. Some of it's age, and some of it's hormones. I personally didn't start dealing with mood swings until my second pregnancy. Before and after my first pregnancy everything was peachy keen and almost nothing phased me.

Wow. Thanks for the complete info DuchessAimee! That really helps. Natural vitamins are better than Aspirin :)

For you my tenderhearted sister, i used to have really terrible headaches during my period (i know its not actually being "down" but nothing beats a bad headache to kill your mood right) so i started a stretching routine a few months back, i heard from a friend that eversince she started stretching she felt more energetic and her cramps and mood swings lessened so i gave it a try and so far the pat couple of months i have been headache free and in a much better mood :) I pray you find the remedy you need :) God bless you! (Just go easy on vitamin b.. My doctor had me on it but told me not to take it for a extended period as it helps put on weight) but hey between a small weight gain and physical torture, i'd take vitamin b's weight gain anytime :) but that's just me.

It's so rare for me to have dysmenorrhea and headache during menstrual period but my sisters often complain about it and it's not a very nice experience. They said it's best you take a pain reliever a day prior to your menstrual period but i wouldn't advise you take pain relievers that often because you might be dependent on it. And try taking primerose/estrogen or any food that contains high level of estrogen but please be warned that estrogen can also make you fat... :)

First headaches or migraines before or during a menstrual cycle is common. Second, a daily vitamin B doseage will only cause weight gain when the individual is already accustomed to overeating. The amount of vitamin B one would have to consume is HUGE in order to cause this phenomenon. Except in very rare instances, vitamin B will cause energy, which when spent, will burn calories. Third, the body will excrete the extra vitamins through urine or feces. However, there are rare cases in which a buildup of beta-carotene (or something like it) will cause the kidneys to shut down or the skin to turn colors.

As for estrogen, it can cause you to lose weight! That's why birth control causes women to eat more. With more estrogen you'll have a heavier period and will be MUCH moodier. Also, if you take a pain reliever such as tylenol, motrin, or aleve, you won't have any dependence issues.

Have no fear. Y'all will be just fine. :D

Not sure if this is scientific, but: Avoid sugar (that is, avoid "candy" sugar). For me at least it seems to make my mood worse.

And since vitamin D has been mentioned: Best natural source is the sun: Get plenty of sunlight! (if you can).
Lack of sunlight can trigger depression or depression- like symptoms.

"Fat" fish is also a good source of vitamin D.

It's normal for me when I'm NOT on my period. I'm the type of girl who finds pleasure in my cramps. Sure, I might be wailing when I'm going through them but afterwards I feel very relieved and even energetic afterwards :] So it kinda perks up my mood.

If your down it is probably what the other ladies said about hormones/hormone flux. For some reason estrogen has a big effect on your mental state :/ I find myself feeling more hot, cranky and less accepting. I'm sorry that your feeling so blue, my dear. May I suggest music? I find it even more effective than asprin sometimes :] Think HAPPY<3
