I got shingles after surgery and then a sunburn. I guess stress triggered it. Because I didn't catch it at first, and my immune system is compromised by the biologics I take, it took me 5 months on Famvir to get over it. Usually, Valtrex is enough.
Then, the next 3 years, every summer when my skin on my arm got exposed, I got it again. It was very painful and frustrating. Esp. since you are not supposed to be able to get it more than once.
I did start on the L-Lysine a few years ago. I don't know if that made a difference, or being careful not to expose the area to sun. If it is bad, you would be wise to take the pharmaceutical anti-virals. I couldn't sleep more than an hour during the first attack, and with an ice pack wrapped around the area. And mine was just the arm. I can't imagine what the face would be like.
Plus, people have gone blind when it moved into the eye. Not a disease you want to play around with.
