Is there a way to test the gift of tongues to see if it is authentic? I was reading this article about testing the gift of tongues and it involved asking the spirit to confess Jesus is come in the flesh and that Jesus is Lord. Would this be a good way to test the gift of tongues or no?

@CherieR "Is there a way to test the gift of tongues to see if it is authentic?"
Well when you are part of a Pentecostal church that preaches sound doctrine and upholds Pentecostal faith strictly in
accordance with scriptures then you will have full confidence and assurance of the truth and power of praying in tongues.
Also remember that the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, is the Spirit of truth and empowers a Pentecostal disciple to worship God
in truth, and to understand the word of God.

When I was baptized in the Holy Spirit I burst out speaking in another tongue - a spiritual language by which I can pray directly
spirit to spirit.
My unbelieving daughter asked me once, "How do you know that you are really praying to God?"
I replied instantly, "Answered prayer. Miracles, healings and blessings that match what I can read in my Bible."

17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
20 And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following.
Mark 16:

No, and you don't "test the gift of tongues." You operate in it, and the fruit will be edification. That is the test, if you will. Is it edifying those around you? If you're in an environment that maybe is apprehensive to the gifts of the Spirit, you might want to consider caution and not speak in tongues around them (unless otherwise led by the Lord). People need to use discernment.

If for whatever reason your tongues and interpretation are against the Word, and against the character and nature of God, then you have something to worry about.

The litmus test then is God's Word, the nature of God, and even so, knowing the voice of God.

If you wanna sound really anointed (at a church prayer meeting or something like that), throw in a few ... Hy .. un .. dai ..... Toy .. ota ........ Hy .. un ... Toy .. ota at the end .......... and you'll have em' jumping, rolling and running like deer being hunted by coyotes (y)
We have enough problems with threads on this topic getting nasty without persons intentionally mocking the point of view of other members. If you can't contribute something constructive to the discussion it would be best that you don't contribute.

The following indicates speaking to God and edifying oneself in an unknown tongue. Personal tongues is our spirit praying to God's Spirit:
"For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries." 1 Cor 14:2
1 Cor 14:4
"He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.

The 15th verse of the same chapter indicates Paul prayed and sang with the spirit (meaning tongues)
"What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also." 1 Cor 14:15
1 Cor 14:4 The word "unknown" was added .A more actuate Contemporary English Version keeping with the foundation of tongues given in Isiah 28 as a sign against the Jews who would not hear and believe the word of God is .

By speaking languages that others don't know, you help only yourself. But by prophesying you help everyone in the church1 Cor 14:4 CEV

The 15th verse of the same chapter indicates Paul prayed and sang with the spirit and times when I should pray with my mind.

When we speak languages that others don’t know, we should pray for the power to explain what we mean. For example, if I use an unknown language in my prayers, my spirit prays but my mind is useless. Then what should I do? There are times when I should pray with my spirit, and times when I should pray with my mind. Sometimes I should sing with my spirit, and at other times I should sing with my mind.1 Cor 14:13 -15CEV

I think asking the spirit to confess Jesus is come in the flesh and that Jesus is Lord is another kind of test even though it could be part of it but not the main test.

Yes there is a way. First and foremost I would suggest studying the foundation of the doctrine of tongue found in Isaiah 28 and learn what was the purpose for God bringing his word in other languages other than Hebrew alone ? Once a person discovers what the sign confirm as to those who it is against, then they will have a better understanding what some are seeking for and whether they should seek after it..

And to help confirm if you believe that God is no longer bringing any new prophecy in any manner to include a tongue and hold fast to not adding or subtracting from the perfect word of God as it is written in its entirety. Then if any man makes a claim God is bringing new prophecy tongues we are to believe not.

God is no longer bringing new prophecy as tongues But the sign continues to show the unbelief of a Jew that will not put his trust in the Word of God, even in their own native tongue.

In Isaiah 28:12 we are given the understanding to what kind of people the sign is against showing their rebellion and refusal to believe God

Isaiah 28:12 He promised you perfect peace and rest, but you refused to listen.

In 1 Corinthians 14 the law is revisited again revels who the sign is against

“I will use strangers who speak unknown languagesto talk to my people. They will speak to them in foreign language but still my people "won’t listen" to me.” 1 Corinthians 14

Mark 16:
The scriptures do not promote walking by sight as in faithless as if the kingdom of God was of this world and it could come by observation. Walking by sight and not faith.

I regard to the authority or name of God confirming the word of God with signs following, Following the word of God or following signs that are required before one believes God?

John 4:47-49 English Standard Version (CEV) And when the man heard that Jesus had come from Judea, he went and begged him to keep his son from dying.Jesus told the official, “You won’t have faith unless you see miracles and wonders!”

The Jew that had no faith made Jesus into a circus seal... Show us a miracle then we will commit belief .No miracle, no faith .

John 6:30 Contemporary English Version (CEV)30 They replied, “What miracle will you work, so that we can have faith in you? What will you do?

Jesus as a sign left when he exposed their faithlessness (no faith)

Matthew 16:4 You want a sign because you are evil and won’t believe! But the only sign you will be given is what happened to Jonah. Then Jesus left.

what? God limits Himself? Wrong! the word limits and God are not compatible. You hold what God does to your own standard. What a prideful comment, " Do we perform Miracles like Elia and Elisa?" . That has nothing to do with limiting and everything to do with God will. Which is not limited. You have placed a false standard on what you say God or people of God need to do for it to be accepted as a miracle. Wrong.
God gave miracles and wonder to specific times and because of certain reasons. This you can find out if you read the bible. If it would be standart the news today should be full of it.
And i mean not the healing entertainment shows in the internet.
Yes God limitet himself for to do what he has promissed. Read the story of Israel f.e. This is not my claim. It to find in Gods word. In the story also with us.

Galatians 1:8
But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

Using the same argument (or "logic") that today's tongues proponents must utilize, we can thereby conclude that an angel from heaven (one in the Lord's glorious presence) preaches a false gospel. H-y-p-e-r-b-o-l-e ... don't leave home without it.

seems this may have happened to you since you mock what you do not understand

you have accepted a false gospel already as your mocking has shown

btw, you have established yourself as not credible with your posts.

Please address the following. It will go a long way to establish your own credibility. Thanks.

Faith, hope and love abide (remain). Prophecies ... they will pass away. Tongues ... they will cease. Knowledge too will pass away. If none of this occurs until Christ returns, somebody tell me why both faith and hope remain a constant when both have been realized with us being in His very presence ? Will we still need to hope ? Faith is the substance of things hoped for ... the evidence of things not seen. In His presence, we surely see Him, don't we ?

lol by your standard and limitation of Go. Think about what you are saying. IF God did do miracles today it would be on the news. The truth is they are on all the time. God does not need your prideful approval of verification. Just like the Pharisees they too mocked the very Miracles Jesus did. John 14 is not directed to Pharisees it was Philp.

Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us. 9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father? 10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake. 12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. 13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If ye shall ask anything in my name, I will do it.

God heals today. I hear those Like you who will say "yes God can heal, He can do anything, but I have not seen it". How prideful. Jesus said Miracles would and do happen, yet they still will not believe. Jesus said we are to pray, what are you praying for? Someone sick in the hospital you pray they die or ask God to heal them? Most who do not see what they think is a miracle will pray Let your will be done because if they pray God heal them and God does not do it you lose faith. What a joke.

God does not heal according to our desires. He is of one mind and always does whatsoever his soul desires . For he performs that which is appoints to us he makes our hearts soft. We can desire he heal us as a privilege .But he heals indiscriminately. If he choses not to heal that does not mean He is faithless .

If we would attribute the unseen work of God and accredit it to the work of man, in affect we are having gods' before Him as a violation of the first commandment .

Its the gospel that can heal forgiving sin and physical aliments. We have a responsibility to pray. He has the power to heal we walk by the unseen faith not by seeking after signs and wonders

And there they preached the gospel. And there sat a certain man at Lystra, impotent in his feet, being a cripple from his mother's womb, who never had walked: The same heard Paul speak: who stedfastly beholding him, and perceiving that he had faith to be healed, Said with a loud voice, Stand upright on thy feet. And he leaped and walked. And when the people saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices, saying in the speech of Lycaonia, The gods are come down to us in the likeness of men.And they called Barnabas, Jupiter; and Paul, Mercurius, because he was the chief speaker.

From my experiences having visited those who seek after a signs and wonders gospel . The leader is like a god to them that are being touched .

Will you look to the foundation of tongues found in Isiah 28 as to why God continues to this day to mock the faithless Jew and why the sign points to them? The sign that confirms a person hears God, hearing prophecy. is men believe God in their hearts . They walk by faith the unseen

@7seasrekeyed

however, why would Paul state he wished that all spoke in languages?

So that they could spread the message of Christianity to others given the demographic make-up of Corinth and the ideal place to spread the message to all corners of the known world (see more below)

Bible does not say how many languages Paul spoke

No, it does not, but given that he was a Jew and where he was born, he certainly would have spoken Greek, Aramaic, and at least had a reading knowledge of Hebrew. Given his dealings with the Romans and his travels, it’s also quite possible he knew at least some Latin. With those three languages; Greek, Latin, and Aramaic (particularly Greek and Latin), he could travel just about anywhere in the Mediterranean Basin without a language issue – he certainly had opportunity to “speak in tongues (read ‘languages’) more than ye all.”

there would be 0 reason in almost every case that the congregants Paul was writing to would have any necessity to speak in several actual languages although 2 seems reasonable

First, and I think foremost, it is critical to understand that Corinth was a multi-cultural, linguistically diverse city on not one, but two ports. As a major seaport city, one would expect to find a constant influx and varied mix of visitors, travelers, transients, freedman and slaves. In addition, it was home to, for lack of a better way of putting it, a major tourist attraction; the Temple of Aphrodite. Though Greek was the language of Corinth, as well as the ‘English of its day; i.e. almost everyone in the Mediterranean Basin was familiar with it to some degree, communication in general between people from different lands and countries must have been difficult at best as it would have had to be conducted in Greek; a language, not everyone traveling through Corinth knew equally well.

A church, any organization really, tends to reflect its environment. Since Corinth was multilingual, one would also expect to see this diversity reflected in its church and other social/religious organizations.

Those passages in Corinthians deal with Paul’s response to an issue at public worship services in that city. Given the demographic make-up of Corinth, communication in general between people from different lands and countries must have been difficult at best. Paul calls for clarity and understanding at a public worship. Again, one can imagine that this must have been somewhat difficult; yes, the Bible is silent as to the demographic make-up of the church in Corinth, but I think it’s very reasonable to assume a multi-lingual make-up.

So, to paraphrase from a previous post, if someone stood up and started praying in say Gaulish, it’s quite possible he’d be the only Gaulish speaker there. Therefore, if one speaks in a language, in this example, Gaulish, he is not speaking to other men (since no one there speaks his language), but only to God, who understands every language. No one else there hears him with any degree of understanding; even though he may be praying by the leading, power and guidance of the Holy Spirit and according to His will (i.e. praying in the Spirit), to everyone listening to him, he’s speaking ‘mysteries’ (an idiomatic way of saying “we have no clue what he’s saying” – in modern English, we’d use the idiom “it’s all Greek to us”).

Real language issues in Corinth, real language responses by Paul on how the church should deal with them.

@CherieR

I would be skeptical if someone said they learned speaking in tongues by getting tongue tied or in this way you have described. The disciples at Pentecost did not have to learn how to speak in tongues, no training whatsoever, they just did it because the Holy Spirit enabled them to.

Exactly my point. It doesn’t exactly lend to what some hold to be the validity of tongues. I would differ with you a bit on the Pentecost narrative – I don’t think the disciples spoke any language they didn’t already know (has to do with the linguistic makeup of the attendees; particularly those Jews from other places, but that’s a whole other story).

Is there a way to test the gift of tongues to see if it is authentic? I was reading this article about testing the gift of tongues and it involved asking the spirit to confess Jesus is come in the flesh and that Jesus is Lord. Would this be a good way to test the gift of tongues or no?

Considering that modern tongues are non-cognitive non-language utterance, there is nothing to test.
The person learning glossolalia from starting out with a nonsense phrase to ‘get them going’, or “prime the pump” is going to eventually produce the same thing as a person who just started speaking without “learning” how to do so.

Modern tongues-speech is essentially a self-created random free vocalization, the sounds of which are drawn from the phonemic inventory (individual sounds in a given language) of the speaker’s native language but may also include sounds from any other language the speaker has been exposed to. In other words, if you’ve never heard a Welsh ‘ll’ sound or a click sound from some African languages, or even a German ü sound, you’ll never produce these sounds in your “tongue”. There’s a bunch of other features unique to glossolalia as well, but the point is, it doesn’t matter how the actual glossolalia was learnt, so there’s nothing to authenticate – random free vocalization is random free vocalization.

What does the Bible say about scoffers?
Question: "What does the Bible say about scoffers?"

Answer: The word translated "scoffer" in English can mean "one who mocks, ridicules, or scorns the belief of another." In Hebrew, the word translated "scoffer" or "mocker" can also mean "ambassador." So a scoffer is one who not only disagrees with an idea, but he also considers himself an ambassador for the opposing idea. He cannot rest until he has demonstrated the foolishness of any idea not his own. A scoffer voices his disagreement, ridicules all who stand against him, and actively recruits others to join his side. In the Bible, scoffers are those who choose to disbelieve God and His Word. They say in their hearts, "There is no God" (Psalm 14:1), and make it their ambition to ridicule those who follow God.

The Bible has a lot to say about scoffers (Proverbs 19:29; 29:8; Acts 13:41). Proverbs 3:34 says that God "scoffs at the scoffers, yet He gives grace to the afflicted." Psalm 1:1 gives us clear instruction about how to deal with scoffers: "How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stand in the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers" (NASB). The progression of unbelief begins with listening to ungodly counsel and ends with joining the scoffers. The Bible warns us not to entertain the company of those who actively ridicule our faith, or we risk having that faith destroyed. Proverbs 13:20 says, "Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm" (ESV).

We cannot totally escape the presence of scoffers. They were active in Jesus' day, and we continue to hear from them today. Jesus told His disciples, “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you" (John 15:18–19). A Christian should "always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks . . . to give the reason for the hope that you have" (1 Peter 3:15). However, when we cease to be the influencers and start to become the influenced, it is time to "shake the dust off our feet" (Matthew 10:14; Mark 6:11; Luke 10:11).

Second Peter 3:3 warns us that "in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires" (cf. Jude 1:18). We know from Scripture that scoffing will only increase as we near the time for Jesus' return (2 Timothy 3:1-5). We already see it happening with the blanket acceptance of evolutionary theory that excludes a Creator, the rapid expansion of false religions that deny the deity of Christ, and the numeric explosion of those who identify themselves as agnostics and atheists.

Scoffers have always been and will always be present in the world. But there is coming a promised day when "at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father" (Philippians 2:10–11). On that day there will no longer be any scoffers. They will at last accept the truth, and their scoffing will be forever silenced.
