Can children take communion ?

Every year at easter time we buy enough matzo crackers to last us until the next easter so we can have communion often at home with whatever meal we want. We have enjoyed it at breakfast , lunch and even dinner. Me and my husband and our 6 year old son are saved and we take it together.

At my church we have a weekly womens prayer meeting, so i asked if i could take the juice and bread. She says yes and knowing my sons on vacation asked if hed be partaking in it. I said yes but he doesnt have to. She basically said he shoukdnt . Well whats the issue? He knows what sins are. Hes been saved. He knows what they represent, he knows we are not there munching on the Lord himself but food that represents him.

So what do you think? I am not holding it against her as we are to be patient and understanding.

We need to teach the importance of it and not to do it flippantly. However.....

Matt 19:14 But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.

BUT.....
1Cor 11:27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.
1Cor 11:28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.

We do it with nothing but respect to our Lord. Especially my son who loves him with all his heart, youd think at his age he wouldnt know much but he does. He attends the christian school at my church which teaches from preschool to highschool and before easter break the teacher taught his kindergarten class about communion, but they didnt get a chance to take the elements because of time .

1st Corinthians chapter 11 talks about examining our hearts, we always ask for forgiveness of any sins before even taking. We are not just taking it as an appetizer.

But thanks for your opinion. We will continue to be acts 2.42 christians. And teach my son while hes teachable.

I did communion as a child and honestly I wish I didn't. I really did not understand it and I definitely didn't examine myself like I should have. I feel I behaved like a typical child though and was respectful. I also didn't have someone explaining it in kid terms.

I wouldn't let my child do communion until I have a meaningful conversation about it and the deep meaning. Otherwise I think it's a good thing.

MrsMom, if you are confident that your son understands the meaning and importance of communion, and that he has believed on Jesus for salvation, then there is no reason why you should prevent him from taking it. However, it is also wise to avoid giving offense to those whose understanding is different. I'd suggest that you have a private conversation with the woman, and ask why she believes as she does. If she doesn't accept that your son is saved, why would she accept that you are saved? Why, for that matter, would you accept that she is saved? If she can't present a sound, biblically-based reason to prevent your son from taking communion, then she should keep her opinion to herself. :)

Lords supper of course was meant to be a meal, and not just a wafer and juice during church services.

The disciples gathered together often and had a meal and when they shared brad and wine they remembered the Lord.

the ceremony we do in churches is only symbolic representation of the real deal

No, a church that takes it very seriously. Understanding that communion is our joining in Christ's death until he comes again. It's not symbolic it spiritual, and those who take it in an unworthy manner eat and drink their own condemnation. Unworthy as in not focused on the horrific price Christ paid for us, and the reason for that price being required is our sin.

Just a quick point to ponder on this.
Yes, it is possible children don't understand the magnitude of taking communion. BUT, I believe some kids do know the importance of communion.
I also believe that adults who should realize communions importance do not. We all do need to approach communion as a holy and spiritual experience. Thanks for this thread, and the reminder of communion's importance!
