Luke 8:30-33 (KJV)
30 And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion: because many devils were entered into him.
31 And they besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep.
32 And there was there an herd of many swine feeding on the mountain: and they besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them. And he suffered them.
33 Then went the devils out of the man, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake, and were choked.

Certainly was not a good deal for Legion. Jesus got the extra benefit of getting rid of a lot of unclean according to Jewish law animals.

The testimony of Jesus was magnified and unbelievers left to scratch their heads.

It is not Christ who negotiated with them, but they who did plead that He show mercy.

Why is going into an herd of pigs, which they drove to their deaths in the sea, mercy?

Yes seems strange scripture. They asked to not be sent to the Bottomless pit and then the pigs killed themselves.

I jsut find it intereting. imagine an exorcism today doing that.

because Hell is the worst place and no coming out of there.

I am thinking that Demons do not die when they body they in die.

You know.....just a few points to ponder.....

a. The devil disputed with Michael over the dead body of Moses <--because he could possess it and lead the Children of Israel astray possibly

b. We know by this that the demons/devils can possess both men and animals

c. The Beast A.K.A. Anti-Christ.......

was <-past tense when Revelation was written

is not <- present tense when Revelation was written

Shall ascend OUT OF THE PIT <--future tense when Revelation was written

Ponder that for a bit!!

Did you notice what was said in verse 31?

And they besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep.

Those demons were fearful that Jesus -- the Son of God -- would cast them into the bottomless pit immediately. "The deep" should really have been translated as the Abyss or the Bottomless Pit, since that is the Greek word used -- ἄβυσσον (abusson).

So from their perspective it was more merciful for the demons to go into the lake, escape out of the swine, and continue on with their nefarious activities. The swine paid the price, but it cleansed the land of unclean animals.

Here is my theory: The demons sought Jesus' permission to enter the pigs so they would not have to go into the deep [KJV]. It was rendered as abyss in other versions. Maybe demons must have someone or something to possess or they will have to go to the abyss. My bet is they had to go there anyway, after the pigs drowned. It would seem fitting. :eek:

Matthew 12:43-45 (KJV) When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.

This is a request for mercy. And Jesus gives it.

So what does this mean about what mercy is? Or about what things are embodiments of mercy?

There is no mention of "mercy" in this incident. One of the demons said "Torment me not" to Christ so it was relatively more merciful to send the legion of demons into the swine than send them directly to be confined in the Abyss.
What is time?

What does this have to do with this matter? Time is what it is.

what do you think the demon was asking for, if not mercy?
What do you think, did Christ show them mercy or not?
