Can anyone tell me, is there anywhere in the bible that says we can make our own anointing oil? If so can you tell me where?
And is there anywhere in the bible that tells you how or what types of oils to use and a prayer for blessing it?
Or can I make it but have to bring it to an elder of the church to have it blessed, or do I have to just get it from them all together.
Thank you

Exodus 25
in Exodus 30:22-33

As you read through the Bible you will see 'Anointing oil". Jame 5: 14 speak on calling the Elders of the church to anoint with oil and pray. The oil represents the Holy Spirit, the will of God, and the point of contact where faith is needed.

According to the verses CS1 gave, you are not supposed to make it for yourself or use it for anything other than its original intention.

Hello and welcome to CC, Pennie...

Scripture neither has injunctions against nor instructions to Christians to make our own anointing oil. What it does have is a clear prohibition against making or using oil according to the recipe for the priestly anointing oil in Exodus 30; that command was given to Israel.

The New Testament has nothing whatsoever about making anointing oil, just references to anointing with oil. That would appear to give a lot of leeway as to how it is made.

If you have questions about where specific terms appear in Scripture, you can search for yourself either in an exhaustive concordance for the translation you use (such as Strong's for the KJV or Goodrick & Kohlenburger for the NIV) or you can use the web site biblegateway.org, which has an online search available for any of dozens of English translations (and many in other languages). The advantage of the online tool is that you can search for occurrences of multiple words in the same verse; this you can't do with a "book" concordance. :)

The anointing oil is not man made like everyone above said it is an anointing of the holy spirit alone, trying to make it is actually dangerous it is the same as trying to make spirit water or holy water that heals and bless. This water is again not a physical water rather the waters that is poured and flowed on you through you and flowing out of you by the holy spirit.
But you can ask God for these things of course but be aware of what you are asking. He can and will give you these things but you have to be prepared for what comes with it. He will anoint you and lead you to areas in the spirit and in God's word that you may be afraid to walk, you must steel your heart and believe and trust in him to move forwards

If you recieve this blessing then you will see the scriptures come alive in your own life walk and in yourself, you may recieve gifts of the spirit you never knew you had and some of them may require great faith to walk in you may receive the the gift of healing or prophecy you may recieve the gift of tongues or the discerning of spirits but in all these things there comes a great blessing and power in God's spirit but remember also that with great power comes great responsibility.

There were times when Jesus would call his followers to walk in great faith and on waters that they did not feel they were ready for, that is the main method of the spirit to draw you into unknown and sometimes scary waters where you have to keep your eyes on Jesus because there will harsh winds and waves of all kinds from other people life and circumstances but to remain steadfast on him and to listen and be guided by the holy spirit is why he brings us to these waters.

If you want this oil and water it is a wonderful thing to seek but as phrased by my favorite comedian actor Jim carrey be careful what you wish for.
This anointing is first and foremeost given to you but from then on the waters are to flow for the sake of others and it will rise in you as well the more you listen and obey. But you have ask yourself are you prepared to walk in those waters?

I think a lot of things have to do with the attitudes of our hearts. I do not think the type of oil limits things. Many use olive oil though it is not specifically prescribed. I think it is the act of obedience, sincere prayer of openness to God's will, our repentance and belief in his healing that are what is essential. I offer this, not as definitive, but what I've been taught, and seen. Bless you.

Pressing is how we get the oil from the olive. The Hebrew word for olive oil is shemen. The Hebrew word for press is gat. An oil press is the word gatshemen. Gethsemane is at the base of the Mt of Olives where Jesus was arrested.

Greek word Christos mean's anointed one Jesus Christ is: "The Anointed One".

The first mention of the olive in the Bible is the olive leaf that the dove returned to Noah, signifying peace & restoration from the devastating flood.

Olive pressing was done in 3 stages/pressings. The 1st pressing yielded the purest oil. As more weight was added to extract more oil. Excess from the 1st pressing would mix resulting in diminished purity.

The 1st pressing:
Olive oil was used as the holy anointing oil to consecrate the priests & instruments of the Temple sanctuary. God said that this sacred olive oil "shall be an holy anointing oil unto Me throughout your generations. Exodus 30:31

The 2nd pressing:
The Bible liken's us to sheep, the Lord is our Shepherd. Sheep often get into trouble & the shepherd lovingly anoints their heads with oil. "Is there any sick among you? Let him call for the elders of the Church: and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord,". James 5:14.

Biblical anointing was not done with one or two drops. Samuel anointed David with a rams horn full of oil. 1 Samuel 16:13.

Anointing oil is symbolic of the Holy Spirit. The disciples were bold & "anointed with oil many that were sick & healed them,". Mark 6:13.

3rd pressing: was the least pure yield: used for lighting lamps & burning.

Gentiles are compared & referred to as "wild olive tree, (Rom 11:17).

During the temple age older large olive trees with deep rooting systems, would begin to dry out. Limbs from smaller wild olive trees would be cut off & grafted into the Large trees. To restore, stimulate & rejuvante the older trees sap system.

James 3:11-13. Let us be good olive plants, majestic olive trees, deep-rooted, long-lasting, producing good fruit for our Master.

Thoughout scripture oil is often linked to healing & joy. It was used to anoint kings & prophets. The highest link to oil signifies the Holy Spirit & outpouring/anointing of the Holy Spirit. Exodus 25:6, Exodus 30:23-33, Leviticus 8:30; Numbers 4:16, Lev 2:1-2, Mk 6:13 & 14:3-9, Lk 4:18, Acts 2:4 & 10:38, Heb 1-8-9

After Jesus shared the Last Supper with His disciples Lk 14:12-25. They went up onto the Mt of Olives Lk 14:26.

1st Pressing:
Luke 22:44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

2nd Pressing:
Jesus is arrested shortly after this prayer. He is taken to the Priests, put on trial and condemned. In the morning they take Him to Pontius Pilate. Jesus is beaten, mocked, scourged and forced to carry His Cross through the streets.

3rd Pressing:
Jesus is nailed to the cross and suffers in agony for 6 hours. Then Proclaims: It is Finished! and dies.

It is the crushing/pressing in the death of Messiah/Christ, Isaiah 53:5. That leads to our healing, joy & the ultimate outpouring of the indwelling Holy Spirit, Act 2:4.

We access through faith placed in the sin redemptive of Christ. Found in his death (sins required wage, PAID) burial (proof Jesus died) & resurrection (Fathers receipt, sin payment received & accepted). Whereby Christ baptizes us with his eternal salvation sealing (2 Cor 1:22, 2 Timothy 1:14, 2 Cor 5:5) indwelling Holy Spirit.

From Mt of Olives Jesus ascended into heaven: Luke 24:50 (NOTE: Bethany is 1 & 1/2 miles east of Jerusalem on the southeastern slope of the Mt of Olives)

Jesus return begins on the Mt of Olives: Zechariah 14:1-4 (NOTE: When Jesus returns he will physically stand on the Mount of Olives)

I think God heals when he chooses, and sometimes he may choose not to heal. There are examples in the Bible to support this. Anointing oil has been used on me several times by a couple of pastors for a chronic issue. However, I was not healed of this issue but fortunately time is sort of a healer. The thing with anointing oil is that, people including the pastor are expecting immediate results. If the recipient is not healed, it is almost always pointed to unbelief. This causes unnecessary and unhealthy thoughts (such as God doesn't love me, God is scary, why is God harsh, am I a bad Christian, etc.). It is better to pray to God for strength to deal through hardship, rather than miraculous healing. It is fine to pray for miraculous healing too, but bear in mind God may not grant it and it does not have to do with unbelief.

If you are referring to the anointing oil which Was poured out upon the priests and the tabernacle under the Old Covenant, then that could only be made as stipulated in the OT. And everyone else was FORBIDDEN from making it.

EXODUS 30: ANOINTING OIL WAS RESTRICTED BY GOD
22 Moreover the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
23 Take thou also unto thee principal spices, of pure myrrh five hundred shekels, and of sweet cinnamon half so much, even two hundred and fifty shekels, and of sweet calamus two hundred and fifty shekels,
24 And of cassia five hundred shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary, and of oil olive an hin:
25 And thou shalt make it an oil of holy ointment, an ointment compound after the art of the apothecary: it shall be an holy anointing oil.
26 And thou shalt anoint the tabernacle of the congregation therewith, and the ark of the testimony,
27 And the table and all his vessels, and the candlestick and his vessels, and the altar of incense,
28 And the altar of burnt offering with all his vessels, and the laver and his foot.
29 And thou shalt sanctify them, that they may be most holy: whatsoever toucheth them shall be holy.
30 And thou shalt anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, thatthey may minister unto me in the priest's office.
31 And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, This shall be an holy anointing oil unto me throughout your generations.
32 Upon man's flesh shall it not be poured, neither shall ye make any other like it, after the composition of it: it is holy, and it shall be holy unto you.
33 Whosoever compoundeth any like it, or whosoever putteth any of it upon a stranger, shall even be cut off from his people.

I tend to think of this as a "do this in remembrance of Me" kind of sacramental thing. It is an "faith in Him and an accepting whatever He thinks best" attitude that the Lord really desires of us. I do like the fact that you are interested in these things. You are a Christian and know that it all points to the glory, grace, and mercy of our kind and loving Lord and Saviour.:)

Oil (in general) reminds me of this story:

1Kings 17
17:14 For thus saith the LORD God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day [that] the LORD sendeth rain upon the earth.
17:15 And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat [many] days.
17:16 [And] the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by Elijah.

Wouldn't really matter what kind of oil it was or who originally squeezed it. The point is that the Lord used it to give life.

As you can see in my post above, there was a very strict purpose and procedure for anointing oil and those who violated this were in jeopardy.

At the same time, for Christians under the New Covenant, it is the Holy Spirit who anoints believers spiritually.

Its believed that the oil used in anointing was olive oil. I don't think they used normal cooking vegetable or sunflower oil. There nothing for or against what your asking to my knowledge, it was usually the prophet that anointed people in the old testament. However i say use your faith, for more power and contractual heavenly agreement, it is best to have the pastor bless your oil for you. I brought olive oil from a store, i 1st got a senior pastor to bless it, then a youth pastor a 2nd time, and then the 3rd time i blessed it myself. I believe in the blessing and 3 people agree on the blessings i will get from this bottle of olive oil.

Hi Pennie! :) I think olive oil is appropriate, seeing that they used that in Scripture, and it's still the best option, healthwise. We buy high quality oil to use at our church. If you find out something otherwise, I'd like to hear about it. Thanks

The people of the old testament were under the old covenant. Under this covenant, the commands of God, and the way God taught the people was through fleshly commands. They were like schoolmasters, leading people to learning. There was spiritual significance in all the commands. Christ fulfilled all of it and put these commands into their spiritual meaning into our hearts and minds.

Read every scripture that mentions this oil but read it under the new covenant. Look for the spiritual meaning of the oil. Follow every instruction in truth and light. That is the anointing oil under the new covenant.
