Let not your heart be troubled...In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also

Can I give most of my mansion away and settle for a small cabin? Jk although that would be heaven for me on Earth. Nothing big or fancy.

I am aware that this scripture is used for hope for the living, and consolation for the survivors at a graveside. But have you ever thought of two things in this scripture that cast doubt on the common understanding.
  1. My Father's House. In the rest of the Bible, the Father's House was, (i) the Tabernacle of the Wilderness, (ii) Solomon's Temple, (iii) Zerubbabel's Temple, (iv) the Body of Jesus, and (v) the Church. If we interpret scripture by the way it uses itself, then Jesus was talking about the Church and its man "abodes" (the Greek word does not warrant "mansions". In verse 23 it is rightly translated "abode")
  2. "Where I AM". Notice the tense. Wherever the disciples "WOULD BE" in the future, Jesus was there at that moment. And at that moment Jesus was on earth in Jerusalem. So our Lord then tells us where He "IS" (present tense) in verse 10; "Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works." Our Lord Jesus was, at that moment, IN the Father, and the Father IN Him - because He was the Father's House.
The real meaning of John 14 is that there was the Father's House, and He - Jesus, was this House. And then He predicts that He must go away to prepare other "abodes" so that when He returned, the disciples could be in those abodes. Now, what stopped the disciples from being "abodes" in the Church - the Father's House? Sin and sins! God has always wanted to be "Housed" in man, but Adam sinned before He could enter into the man. Since then, these many "abodes" in the Father's House have been empty. But once sin and sins was taken care off by the death of Jesus, the way was "prepared" for them to be "abodes" in the father's House.

And this is was what happened. Our Lord Jesus went away into death for 3 days. Then he met Mary at the tomb and said that she may not touch Him BECAUSE He had not YET ascended to His Father. But that night our Lord Jesus said they could touch Him, AND He breathed the Holy Spirit into His disciples. At that instant they became "abodes". At that moment, they were in the Father and the Father in them. The prediction of John 14 is exactly fulfilled in John 20. John 14 is about the House of God, and this House was filled with men as "abodes" in John 20:22.

I always think of my ancestors when I think of old English cottages or Scottish Highlands.

Definitely would have to have a fire place and a front porch. I'm not sure what our routines will be in Heaven but if I had down time I hope it includes coffee, guitar, and the blessings of good company. I wonder if Jesus would drink coffee lol.

Last time I rode a horse it tried to buck me off and ran my leg along side a barbwire fence.

yeah I'm good with the coffee and guitar and good company. Jesus does ride a horse (Revelation)

that sounds like either a very green (untrained or just starting) or just plain mean horse

I was bucked off once...broken shoulder.

still ride but more sensible horses :)

This is such a LAUGHABLE interpretation that it should go under "Bizarre Ideas Today". We really need a forum for such bizarre ideas.

According to this interpretation, Jesus goes to Himself, and comes again from Himself. How ludicrous is that?

You would be insulting God and Christ by giving away your mansion.

I love cabins lol I wish I owned one in the deep woods somewhere
Me too. Unfortunately, I have to settle for camping. Last time we had gone hiking and found a memorial site a good distance away from civilization. A military plane had unfortunately flown too low in the fog and ran into the mtn exactly where we were located. 4 out of 5 people died. 2 pilots and 3 passengers on the way home for Christmas. It hit the mtn and was torn to pieces killing 3 instantly. Jet fuel spewing everywhere. Help arrived quickly and a local pastor was with the group. 1 man laid in serious condition while the other was dying. The pastor asked the man did he know Jesus Christ and would he want to give his life to Jesus. The boy said yes and then died. The lone survivor lived and married the girl he was on the way home to propose to. Spent his life with those memories of that gruesome scene. The site was located in FDR state park. The plane crash was mostly forgotten until only a few years ago they decided to build a memorial the last few years of the survivor's life.

It was always nice spending my first three summers and part of a winter in my pup tent in the Rockies, Roosevelt National forest..

I was visited mornings by humming birds coming up and buzzing my nose. Late afternoons there were these birds that would encircle my campsite. I do not know exactly what birds. They were about the size of a dove, grey, with faces very similar to an owl. I have never been able to find out what they were.

There was a porcupine that would come by, about three feet high, and v ery slow.

Aspens, lodge post pines, ponderosa pies, and so much more. It was wonderful. I would walk across the Great Divide on occasion via Rollins Pass. All the time reading the Word and sharing with all who would hear.

I did not deserve those three years, but our Father gave them to me anyway. Praise God, He is worthy, amen.

“‘Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. What kind of house will you build for me, says the Lord, or what is the place of my rest?"
Acts 7:49

If the earth is a footstool, Heaven a throne, then God's house must be extremely large. The mansions in that house will also be quite large. One mansion will be much larger than the earth if it is a footstool. Think about about.

I'm only joking but actually you will be given a crown that you will also throw at the feet of Jesus. So that is you giving away what you were given to honor Christ.

Figured most people could catch on I was joking. Oh well.

I don't think so

God knows all about what we do and do not like

I do not think He would be insulted since He made us. let's not get carried away here

I suppose it just didn't trust me lol idk it was a horse I had never ridden. Also could be inexperience as our horses growing up were 4 wheelers, go-carts, and bicycles. I had a few opportunities to ride a horse and 1 time a donkey. The donkey also tried to buck me off. I was a kid then and only remember hanging on for dear life lol. Eventually, slid off the side as it had no saddle.

Ouch. A broken shoulder? Yah I think I would settle for an older more experienced horse.

horses are very sensitive animals. I've had a number of them but currently none :(

the horse that bucked me off was just a mean mare...she was nasty to other horses as well. I was totally unprepared for that but I guess she made her point.

sounds like you shouldn't enter a rodeo ;)

Yah they are expensive and needs a lot of room plus care.

Shoot I bet I held on for a good 6 seconds. Not sure what a winning time would be but maybe I would at least qualify.

You either need strength, lack of brains, or just raw willpower to ride a bull or bucking horse for sport. I may have one of those covered so my odds may be good lol.

Two things.
  1. A matter can be "laughable" because it is based on a joke. Or it could be laughable because the hearer has never considered such a theory. The fact that you will not counter one of my arguments, but call it laughable, is strange. I interpreted "The father's House" with scripture, I stuck precisely to the grammar, and I showed the fulfillment of the prediction. And you find such to be "laughable"? Pray tell us, how shall we approach the Words of the greatest Mind in the universe? With a Roman Catholic myth about pearly gates and streets of Gold and the word "mansions" which the translators translate as "abode" some twenty verses hence.
  2. I did not interpret anything. A type, a parable and/or an obscure meaning needs interpreting. Is John 14 one of these? I think not.
John 14 is plain. The Lord Jesus ...
  • says that He is going away, but that He will return
  • says that His going away is to prepare abodes for His disciples
  • says that these abodes are in His Father's House
  • says that He IS (present tense) in a certain place
  • says that after He has gone away and come again, His disciple will, "in that day", be IN the same place as He is NOW
  • says that the place He refers to is being IN the Father and the Father IN Him
  • went away into death, returned after 3 days and breathed God into His disciples
Which of these bears the joke?

Finally, your attitude is shown in YOUR statement. This comes from your mind. You won't find it in my posting.

"According to this interpretation, Jesus goes to Himself, and comes again from Himself. How ludicrous is that?"
Thus, you create a non-existent problem and then fight it with ridicule.

But I am open to learn. Pray, give the correct understanding of John 14, in its entirety, and within the context of the Book of John. I promise to read it because to support your theory of "mansions", it will go to about 3 pages.

My first three summers after the Holy Spirit entered into me, and I turned from solutions in the creation to the Solution from the Creator, Jesus-Yeshua. Praise God.

As a father pities his children, so the Lord pities those who fear Him. For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust Psalm 103:13-14, what does this mean
