Anyone goes to or went to a single sex school? Or same sex. Meaning all boys or all girls.
Just wondering what that was like or what was the rationale for it. Were you better educated because of it?

Or is it a throw back to when only boys got an education and girls were an after thought so they had to have their own separate schools?
Is it a christian thing to separate the sexes? or more of a catholic thing?

You may notice that those schools don't segregate by male or female until about the age of puberty. They do this to eliminate distractions in the learning environment for the students. The idea being that the opposite sex being present creates sexual tensions among the student body and prevents the random pregnancies rampant in public schools. The goal is to help the students focus on learning.

wow I went to a co-ed school AND university and came out unscathed and didnt fall pregnant. Must be something wrong with me huh. I only recall one high school pregnancy but thing is, girls only schools seemed to have higher rates of teen pregnancy (one girls school was nicknamed k----- kennels)

I dont recall any single sex univerisities and the entire focus of the university WAS learning. I worked in the engineeing department in the library and the entire faculty was actually trying to ATTRACT girls/females.

for learning engineering, not as wives for the male engineers!

how outmoded are single sex schools now I wonder.

Imagine. Harry potter enrolld in Hogwarts school for wizards. Hermione enrolls in sowwarts school for witches....totally separate. Cant be distacted now can you? it would have required writing another series.

thats a relief cos it was just in the news the other day about a top auckland boarding school for boys had teachers that were abusing their students. They owned up years later. and homosexuality was rife in single sex schools.

I did..

Socially it was a disadvantage..

Academically it was an advantage..

I think academically its only an advantage if you are male. That is because without females in the school there is more chance to be top of the class if you are male.

I have colleagues that work in single sex schools for boys (after having worked in coed environment) and they can attest to that.
some of those schools have now started accepting girls but there is actually a bit of snob value in being separate.
I think today there is still an element of 'boys subjects' and 'girls subjects' when I was in high school for example, not many girls took technical drawing, and not many boys would take textiles.
and of course sports is often separate.

this is not to say all schools now have unisex toilets or anything...not going that far, but at least both the girls and boys BOTH got toilets and were treated equally.

I think the main difference academically between boys and girls is that boys develop at a slower rate than girls in their maturity. the girls in my school read for more than the boys, but theres this element of 'reading is not cool for boys' sometimes. But you only need books that will interest them and what they can relate to.

it wasnt long ago that girls were barred from further education and told to stay hime, or parents aimply couldnt afford to send them to school, they had to go out and earn money or marry. I think that was the same for boys but a lot more is riding on a boys acadmeic success as they have more opportnities than girls do. and that is still the case. You go in the workplace, everything is geared up for the men its like being left handed in a right handed world. so when you get told you cant do something just because you are female when youve always been treated like you can do anything its quite disconcerting.

I was talking to an elder about subject of girls and boys schools and she said back in her schooldays if a town was big enough to support single sex schools they would build them, otherwise, smaller towns just got coed.

Maybe its just a matter of resources.

New schools even today cant cope student numbers and some are being crowded into halls, libraries and even principals offices.

I flatted in mixed flat situations at university hostels but didnt share a room with anyone from the opposite sex. it was assumed if you did that, you were going to be married or a couple. Or maybe you were just broke and too cheap and wanted to pay less rent. Some students actually did get married so they could have a bigger allowance.

im just wondering if the education for girls was less quality or options than the boys, because teachers used to assume girls wernt any good at science and maths, so they would neglect to teach them that. and of course NOW people are suddenly realise, hey women can actually do just as well in those subjects.
as if suddenly it was discovered women had brains!

I got to reading this book called 'I am Roe' it was a memoir by the woman who identified as the plaintiff 'Jane Roe' in the landmark Roe vs Wade case in the US, which led to reform in abortion legislation in 1973.


anyway. I didnt know much of anything about the case or who it was about before I read this. Id recommend people do read it if they want to know more about it.
But to cut a long story short Norma mc corvey who identified as Roe, came out as lesbian and she might have been from the time of adolescence, since she got packed off to an all-girls reform school and started her lesbian relationships or 'experimenting' there.

So probably not all single sex schools are hotbeds of homosexuality, but it just seems like many of them are, and its often even accepted as normal part of school life. and many people who are married now and even pillars of society say they had same sex relations in their school days. ?!

on a side note, it seems Norma became a born again christian and went prolife. but again it seems she was ambivalent about everything and became all things to all people, since she had three children to three different fathers as well as being lesbian. ?! You know how some people are chameleons and agree with you, but when they go with someone else who says the opposite they change their mind and agree with them as well. She was kind of like that, maybe cos she was poor, it was about survival and she had no other options.

What was the exact time frame you are talking about when only boys were allowed to go to school? Im really confused. Typically if anyone dropped out of school it was the boys to help the father farm. And yes public schools are ces pools of sex. A girl i dated was a senior and said 43 freshmen girls were pregnant and that was early in the school year. I was told by kids at other districts stories much worse. Of course it depends on the school. Mine wasnt that bad but some of them the children are such a bad influence you are better off having your kid drop out.

dont be confused, just do your research...I went to a co ed hig school and university and there didnt seem to be the huge problems that single sex schools had.

I work in a primary school. One of the year 6 girls wasnt going on to a local school that all the others were going to as her parents thought it wasnt a good school so they would go out of area, but shes not going to a single sex school or private school.

the single sex schools for girls dont have good sports teachers either I heard.

there are christian schools around but most of them are co ed, some parents would rather put their child in them than send them to a single sex school, because of bullying.

the previous librarian went on work in a single sex catholic school but she doesnt send her own boys there. I just wondered what the advantages are in terms of education. None of these school are boarding schools.

but even at university where people do live on campus, where there are mixed flats and dorms, maybe it was just me but I didnt see a lot of pregancies - only one, and I do remember they did talk to us about birth control IF you were ever going to go that way, it was kind of assumed that the young men arent there to knock the young ladies up, they are there to learn. Maybe in some countries they dont even talk about that side of things so people are totally ignorant?

things like condoms, iuds, diaphragms, patches, the pill etc. You dont need them if you abstain of course.

I neglected to post on this before because it seems like you are trying to analyze unilaterally and declare one way or the other when there really isn't enough data.

I would think for a believer, minimizing pre-marital sex would be applauded. Obviously, restricting access to the internet and females would go a long way but you also have to teach them in the process about self-control and proper scriptural boundaries. To just go what in my view is the "monasterial" approach which is like putting yourself in prison should probably be voluntary as much as is possible factoring in ages but unrestricting access entirely so long as a person is getting good grades is nonsense. That's like telling young boys that there are co-ed showers but you can choose not to use them if you want. I'm not going to cater people that want to sin...it should be as difficult as possible and adjustments made as needed. If a child wanted to get married while in school and they had parental permission I would allow that probably but that's a different issue depending on a person's age.

I don't know what would reduce temptation for females other than separate beaches/pools if such areas are at a particular institution.

My approach is to preclude the possibilities of causing others to stumble as much as possible and providing the best format for learning which is obviously going to vary person to person.

um we are talking about schools not, pools or beaches.
Most schools arent at the beach and have actually have separate toilet and changing facilities. Its really not an issue in co- ed schools Ive been to, so dont know why people are assuming something that has never been in my experience a big issue.

actually the single sex schools seem to have a lot more issues with homosexuality so on the face of it they are compounding a problem, and not even teaching about self control.

I dont know if youve ever been to a public swimming pool, Mii, but as far as I know they all have separate changing facilites and shock horror, in a lot of them both sexes actually share the same water.

well the original solution for that was your parents arranged your marriage for you when you were a toddler and so when you were came of age you got betrothed and that was that.

premarital sex was then not an even an issue.

You only needed what five years of school anyway.

if you wanted to study more you gave up marriage and became a scholar. That is why people that went on to higher studies were called BACHELORS.

I was in an all boys school for a while and even stayed in a res. No problem with homosexuality there. As a matter of fact the boys will not admit it because of peer pressure. Boys discuss girls and when it is only boys it escalate. I also did not have any problems adjusting to a co-ed school.
