Is there a housing shortage across the U.S.? There sure is one where I live. My wife would love to find a house with an in ground pool or on the lake. Ever since the Covid pandemic, people don't seem to be traveling as much and want a pool or a lake house as well where I live. Every time we look at a house with a pool or it's on the lake, it's way over priced! Even when we find a house that we like that is barely in our price range, the owner will get multiple offers that turns into a bid war and on average, the highest offer ends up being around $30K over the asking price. This is very frustrating for us! We will both be retiring soon and don't want to get strapped financially. The house we live in now is nice and is almost paid off, but apparently, wifey needs water. Having an in ground pool installed is very expensive now! Starting price is $40K.

stay put in the house you have now that's almost paid off.
Pray about it, don't make any rash decissions.

I'm not opposed to an above ground pool (they are much cheaper) but she seems to have her heart set on an in ground pool. We had an in ground pool before, years ago and it was large with a shallow end and deep end with a diving board. I got tired of maintaining it. I will insist on a salt water pool next time. Our previous in ground pool was installed for $25K back in 1990 by the previous owners. Today, that same pool would cost more like $65K.

Haven't waterfront properties almost always been more dear than those that are landlocked? Even living close to a beach is preferable for many than living elsewhere I live in a neighborhood that is surrounded by water on three sides. For thirty years there were summer fireworks' displays (except for last year due to COVID), and hundreds of thousands of people would flock into this and other nearby beachfront areas to take in the spectacle. I did mingle with the masses a few times for these events, once even from a boat on the water, but mostly enjoyed them from the safety and privacy and much less crowded confines of my own living space, which afforded an excellent view of the proceedings. The older I get, the less I like crowds... but the point is, beaches are destinations for people who live elsewhere, people who may spend days or weeks preparing to take that trip, regardless of how long they plan to stay, to be near the water and the amenities offered. That pool @Godsgirl83 posted looks quite nice Also, I think there may be a housing crisis in many places. Real estate is ridiculously expensive, and construction of new dwellings to house burgeoning populations does not in any way seem to keep up with the demand. I do hope you find something nice that satisfies both of you

I know a woman who built a new house in 2016 and said within the first year, just about everything that could go wrong went wrong. When it rained hard, water leaked through two windows and through the front door. Her garbage disposal stopped working in just 3 months and she also had electrical and plumbing problems! She said that she would NEVER build a new house again! I have walked into multiple brand new houses for sale multiple times and nit picked them left and right for poor quality construction. I've heard multiple new home buyers complain that they needed a new paint job and new carpet within 5 years of purchasing their new house.

"thumb tacks and glue" is what I've heard newer homes are being built with.

A youngin can teach an oldin many other things lol 😂 but yes I've read some of your posts and there's one thing admirable I've noticed and that is how you hold yourself together despite what's happening around you... It is not so easy...I am sure. That's one of the hardest things to do...to stay strong, to stay positive and to stay sane.
