What is the difference between the old and the new covenant?

When Christians say they are not under the law, what does that mean? What does it mean that the law is abolished?

If we are not under law then surely, this means that we can do as we please doesn't it?

And if we dont have any laws to follow then what is the purpose of reading the bible?
we have to believe and abide in the gospel in the thkngs jesus taught that is the law of the spirit of life . We have to follow the gospel to be free of the law of Moses

“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭8:1-2‬ ‭KJV‬‬

there was always another word another law that Christ would bring into truth when he was anointed by the spirit

Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.

He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law.

I the Lord have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles; To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house. I am the Lord: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.

Behold, the former things are come to pass, and new things do I declare: before they spring forth I tell you of them.”
‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭42:1, 4, 6-9‬ ‭

the gospel is those new things coming forth that prophecy told us about

“Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭3:21-22‬ ‭KJV‬‬

That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles.”
Matthew‬ ‭12:17-18‬ ‭

The word he spoke is forever the covenant God has made with mankind according to his blood

“And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the Lord. As for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the Lord; My spirit that is upon thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed's seed, saith the Lord, from henceforth and for ever.”
‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭59:20-21‬ ‭KJV‬

Moses covenant was this blood and this word

“And he took the book of the covenant, and read in the audience of the people:

and they said, All that the Lord hath said will we do, and be obedient.

And Moses took the blood, and sprinkled it on the people, and said, Behold the blood of the covenant, which the Lord hath made with you concerning all these words.”
‭‭Exodus‬ ‭24:7-8‬ ‭

That’s when the old covenant became of effect all Moses said became the law when he shed the blood of the covenant they had made

the new covenant is what Jesus first preached to the people and said believe and be saved and then he like Moses shed the blood of the covenant for the remission of sins prior under the first law and covenant transgression

until a sinner dies the law isn’t fulfilled so we die through Christ by faith in order to fulfill the law . Our law is the gospel

“And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.”
‭‭Mark‬ ‭16:15-16‬ ‭KJV‬‬

the word of Christ

It’s this being fulfilled

“Hearken unto me, my people; and give ear unto me, O my nation: for a law shall proceed from me, and I will make my judgment to rest for a light of the people.

My righteousness is near; my salvation is gone forth, and mine arms shall judge the people; the isles shall wait upon me, and on mine arm shall they trust.”
‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭51:4-5‬ ‭KJV‬‬

we don’t owe Moses anything he never interceded for us we owe Jesus everything because he did by his own blood intercede and still does on our behalf

so he himself is the only mediator the word is Christs word but it is not the letter but the spirit within the gospel we follow

we have no need to gouge our eyes out like he says , cut off our hand like he said if we happen to transgress . But the spirit of what he is saying is we need to treat sin as if we’re gouging it out and casting it away from us , or chopping it off . The spirit of his word is life

when he says we need to eat his flesh and drink his blood , or when he says “ I am the bread of life whoever deeds on me will live forever “ it’s not literal
Like the letter it is a figure full of understanding a spirit formoir mind to accept about the subject he’s teaching

In other words, we can do as we please?
Are you looking for an excuse to do as you please?
By the way, what is the new covenant?
The New Covenant is God's covenant with all humanity to extend His grace and mercy to all those who believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.

Just as God made a covenant with Noah that when anyone saw a rainbow, it would mean that God would never again destroy the world with a Flood, God made a covenant with all sinners that when they believe on the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ for their salvation, they will not face His wrath.

The New Covenant justifies the ungodly by grace through faith in Christ, and His finished work of redemption. It is the shed blood of Christ which ratified the New Covenant.

That is a very good question, Lanolin. The difference is as follows: The Old Testiment is when God made the laws for Moses and Israel's People. The New Testament is when Yeshua (Jesus) was crucified, died, was buried and rose up on the 3rd day, thereby doing away with the law with the New Covenant.

Jer 31:31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:

Heb 8:8 For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:

Heb 8:13 In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decays and waxes old is ready to vanish away.

Might I add.... if one truly loves God, they will NOT do any wrong against another. They will not want to sin.

(read these in context (a few verses above and below) to get the full understanding.
I hope this helps you.

There are, online, places where you can get schedules to read the Bible daily - a bit OT (old Testament) and NT new Testament). I would recommend reading some of both each day. a couple chapters of each. Just type in your search engine what you're looking for. :D

Blessings

The new covenant states that God will put the law into our hearts and into our minds hebrews 10:16.

So under the new covenant, we as christians should willingly want to follow the laws of God, but not under compulsion as they did in the old testament.

Romans 9: 30 30 What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith.

31 But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness.

32 Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone;

33 As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

If we are not under law then surely, this means that we can do as we please doesn't it?

And if we dont have any laws to follow then what is the purpose of reading the bible?
The Old Covenant was a physical covenant that pertained only to this earth for blessings, and prosperity, and they had to go by physical laws, and physical ordinances, but the moral laws, laws of love were still there.

They had to have their sins covered by the blood of bulls and goats, animals, but there was a remembrance every year and their sins had to be covered again, which the High Priest would sacrifice once a year for the nation of Israel.

So their sins could not be completely taken away but only covered.

There was also the blessing that no enemy could prosper against Israel if the nation followed God in the truth.

The New Testament is a spiritual covenant that give access to heaven the spiritual realm for blessings, and prosperity, and God promised to supply their needs if they did seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and we do not go by the physical laws, physical ordinances anymore, but only the moral laws, laws of love which the 2 greatest commandments are love God and love people, and love is the fulfilling of the law.

Paul said we do not void out the law through faith but we establish the law which we fulfill the law.

Paul said the law is spiritual, holy, just, and good, which are the moral laws, laws of love.

The moral laws, laws of love, which include the 10 commandments are always to be obeyed because they are spiritual laws and it is a spiritual covenant.

Which a Spirit led life will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh for they have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts, and show the ways of the Spirit and not the flesh, and God will not allow them to be tempted above what they can handle, and will give them an escape from the temptation so they can bear it.

So a Spirit led life will not sin, and if we do sin to repent and be led of the Spirit again.

A Spirit led life is not under the law because all their sins are forgiven, and they are not sinning at the time they are led of the Spirit, therefore the law cannot touch them for prosecution.

Every time a saint sins they forfeit repentance, and are not led of the Spirit at that time, and under the law, and then when they stop doing the sin and do not want it anymore, and led of the Spirit they are not under the law.

We have to establish the law which is spiritual the moral laws, laws of love, for they never pass away and are always to be obeyed and if not obeyed the person is not acting Christlike.

A lot of Christians arent able to explain clearly what they believe in, and when someone ask a question, they are full of insults for a reply. But really, how do you hope to win souls, when you cant explain anything?

Give Thanks, I love you! (in God's Love). I don't know or understand everything either. But, I am sure ready and willing to learn! This one reason I study God's Word every day for the past 55 years (give or take).

1 John 2:27 But the anointing which ye have received of Him abides in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teaches you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it has taught you, ye shall abide in him.

And He has! I am totally awed that God would even consider ME as one of His students. :D I praise Him every moment for all that He has taught and blessed me with.

Certain behaviour, but what about the other behaviours? How will anyone know whats wrong or right?
Which law are you referring to here? The law of God, or the law of the land? The law of God is not necessarily the law of the land. Does this mean we can do as we please?
If you commit murder, you are looking at jail, or in some countries, death penalty.

If you commit adultery, you might end up divorced.

If you constantly lie to your friends, you might end up with zero friends.

Do you still want to do what you please?

Ok well why did you make this statement: We just need to know that the Law was not given to us and we don't need the Law to relate to God.

As you have proven we do need the law.

Are you saying that there are no laws in the scripture for us to follow?
Did I even hint at that? No. I responded to your question:

And if we dont have any laws to follow then what is the purpose of reading the bible?
There are indeed laws in Scripture. There were requirements before the covenant of the Law, there were requirements under the Law (aka the old covenant), and there are requirements for those under the new covenant.

However, the Bible is far more than just "laws". If your relationship with God is based on following "laws" then it is not based on faith; the latter is His desire...

John 6:29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”

and

Hebrews 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please Him....

Nothing I have stated there is linked to how God relates to us.

God does not save us, nor bless us, based on law keeping.

The Law was given to prove to us that we are unable to keep the Law. It's not that the law is impossible. It's not, However, there is a deep rooted, proud rebellion that thumbs its nose at God. It's in the heart of every human being, no matter how "good" they appear outwardly. The Israelites boasted that they could obey the Law. Look how that turned out.

Those who are born again are subject to a new law, hence the New Covenant. It's the Law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus. Ideally, Christians would not need the Bible because we have the "Living Word" within us. We have the Holy Spirit to lead us into the truth.

We also have another force to reckon with. We have the self of the soul that still needs to be subdued and we have a battle with satanic forces that seek to lead us astray. Most of the New Testament was written to counteract heresies that were creeping into the church. The best defence against lies and deception is to be immersed in the Truth.

A lot of good stuff to agree there I would also say that the Ten Commandments don’t have any impact anymore , before you form an opinion hear me out one commandment is for the flesh the other is for the spirit

“Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:

But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭5:27-28‬ ‭KJV‬‬

the part about not commuting it has to be left behind because of we follow Jesus commandment and stop allowing lustful ideas to fester in our minds fantasies and imaginations about others , we will never desire to commit adultery and don’t need to be told what not to do anymore because we begin to learn what we are supposed to do instead

one covenant is death the one on the stone tablets this first covenant is meant to administer a sentance of death to sinners so that they can find thier need for repentance and faith in Christ the savior and his word

“Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament;

not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.

But if the ministration of death, written and engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance; which glory was to be done away:”
‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭3:6-7‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Moses law is all about transgression God doesn’t speak to his born again children the same as lost sinners who have no interest in repenting and believing the gospel.

A bekiever has a foundation something like this built in thier spiritual youth

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
‭‭John‬ ‭3:16‬ ‭KJV‬‬

And so the worlds faith begins something like this who hear the gospel

“But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.”
‭‭John‬ ‭20:31‬ ‭KJV‬‬

The law looks at Gods as stiff necked sinners so it speaks to them

“Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;”
‭‭1 Timothy‬ ‭1:9-10‬ ‭KJV‬‬

But the gospel is not that way the gospel promises forgiveness for believers and repentance to be given into believers hearts but we need to accept and believe his doctrine . He promises a new birth a clean slate , an empowerment within us if we believe

eternal Life if we accept his word and believe , the law can’t make anyone right because it’s meant for sinners who never repent to hold them guilty

“Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.

Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭3:19-20‬ ‭KJV‬‬

It’s even added to creation because of sin

Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.”
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭3:19‬ ‭KJV‬‬

If we remain in moses law abiding by the commandments meant to hold us guilty we are going to struggle but if we accept Jesus understanding we can begin to find freedom where the devils stronghold is

“For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.”
‭‭Mark‬ ‭7:21-23‬ ‭KJV‬‬

that’s why Jesus is focused on the list in the heart because that’s the root of adultery we need to follow his doctrine and we’ll be set free and never need to commandment again of what not to do well have the truth written on our heart of how To overcome sin , by fighting temptations within in our spiritual part in our mind and heart of faith

What is the difference between the old and the new covenant?
The old one is not in effect anymore which is why it's called old. Paul said it decomposing and about to disappear. It was a covenant between God and Israel.

The new covenant is between God and those who accept Jesus as Messiah.

It was first made with Christians that were Jewish, the 12 disciples. Eventually it was offered to gentile believers through the gospel.

The covenant is not made with those who reject Christ.

Are you reading those 2 verses literally?
