I think it is much more than either of our posts. We are told all work will be revealed with fire, and we know the Lord is fire. If you judge work by the fire of the Lord, then it is a way of seeing if your life is productive or not. As we build a family that loves the Lord, a home filled with love, it is work that stands up to the fire of the Lord.

We can be a saved person, who has been given eternal life, but withhold our works. It seems to me that the Jews who try to live a life centered on the works the Lord tells them please Him have rewards but their eternal life is in jeopardy, for that is dependent on faith in Christ. We are told they excel in every way they have rewards. Christians intent on their salvation but deny the need for work has their salvation but not the rewards of work.

It is part of the God's laws that rule our world.
God's Word is clear that we were created in Christ Jesus unto good works (Eph 2:10) and each born again believer has been graced with gifts in order that each one of us participates in the full functioning of the body of Christ (Rom 12) ... each one of us having been placed in the body as it has pleased God (1 Cor 12:18).

The gift ministries of apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers have been given to the body of Christ by the Head (the Lord Jesus Christ) in order to equip each member of the body for the work of the ministry for the building up of the body of Christ ... each member of the body supplying what is needed (Eph 4:10-16).

It is just amazing (to me) that as we realize just how vital each one of us is ... that as we function, it is to the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God, According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord (Eph 3:10-11).:cool::cool:

Do you think the works in Ephesians relate to works in Corinthians that are tested are the same?

What is this passage talking about exactly? Does this process involve literal fire or is this figurative language?

1 Corinthians 3:10-15 (KJV)
10According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon.]But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. 11For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.12Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; 13Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is. 14If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. 15If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.
READ SLOWLY
According to how much of Christ Jesus the holy spirit has revealed to apostle Paul he speaks .
But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. 11For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
here talks about God's only escape plan for man in Christ Jesus, saving Man from the curse upon Jacob.

Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; 13Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it
here he explains further that if any man believing and accepting what has been revealed of Christ Jesus(LORD &SAVIOR) . Now its important the believer (builder) after saved , submits to the lordship of Christ Jesus, that's where works matters all three components seed , time and harvest . works bring forth fruit , the day of harvest is the Day of the Lord to declare.

it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is. 14If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.
yes there shall be a shaking Apostle Paul explains ,and that which is not of firm foundation will fall away, the only firm foundation is in Christ Jesus. again all three components seed , time and harvest expose every man's work. the Lord of host executes according to the will of God. the Reward is in the seed of Abraham which is Jesus Christ the Son of God

If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.
finally when after the shaking the man now realizes hes been foolish thinking self righteousness could cut it ,hes work done is past and he saved to work GOOD WORKS rather than EVIL works . note evil works is works outside Christ Jesus because they all lea to death and destruction.
the HOLY SPIRIT( Lord of Host) DOES THE WORK . the new believer Baptized of fire

I don't fully get or understand the crown's that are given and how the works relate to them.
Yeah ... good question. I know of 5 crowns:

Incorruptible crown -

1 Corinthians 9:

24 Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.

25 And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.

26 I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:

27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway [not stand approved; disqualified = no crown].

Crown of rejoicing -

1 Thessalongians 2:

19 For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Are not even ye in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming?

20 For ye are our glory and joy.

Crown of righteousness -

2 Timothy 4:

7 I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:

8 Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.

Crown of life -

James 1:12 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.

Revelation 2:10 Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.

Crown of glory -

1 Peter 5:

1 The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed:

2 Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;

3 Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.

4 And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.

I believe we will cast our crowns at the feet of Jesus ... He is the One Who is worthy and He is the One Who works within us as without Him, we can do nothing (John 15:5).

I also agree with @2ndTimothyGroup that we should not focus on the crowns (or the rewards for that matter). If the only reason we serve the Lord is to get a reward or crown after all He has done for us and in us, that is not serving the Lord ... it is serving self (imho). Having said that, I believe it is good to know what God tells us in His Word ... and He tells us about crowns and rewards for a reason. If we seek to know His reasoning, all is good. If we seek for our own carnal reasoning ... not so good (again jmho).

I was replying to Post #63 submitted by Blik where it appeared there was an expansion on what is specifically revealed in 1 Cor 3.

However, in answer to your question, I never thought about it. What do you think?

According to 1Cor 3:9, two distinct groups are in view in this section of first
Corinthians.

1» Laborers together with God, i.e. apostles, evangelists, preachers, Sunday
school teachers, missionaries, etc.

2» God's husbandry, God's building, i.e. converts: rank and file pew
warmers.

The fire about which you ask applies only to the first group.

The fire, even if literal, does not burn laborers; it only burns their unsatisfactory
works while they walk away unharmed.

NOTE: A footnote in the current official Catholic Bible says that 1Cor 3:15
has sometimes been used to support the notion of a purgatory, though it
does not envisage this.

Non biblical materials (footnotes) in the current official Catholic Bible (a.k.a.
the 2011 New American Bible) have a nihil obstat by Reverend Richard L.
Schaefer, Censor Deputatus, and an imprimatur by Most Reverend Jerome
Hanus, O.S.B. Archbishop of Duguque.
_
You are not following scripture when you have decided what God meant by a fire. Scripture tells us “For our ‘God is a consuming fire’” (Hebrews 12:29).

When God gives us an eternal principle, as God is in these verses, it is a principle He gives that apples to the world God created, not to one part of His world and not another part.

Even the tides of the ocean and the rise and setting of the sun is ruled by these set principles. If they are changed by God we call it a miracle.

Thanks for responding.

Maybe I will look into the crown's you have mentioned.

I also agree with @2ndTimothyGroup

I spent the most of my Christian life doing works for God in the hope I would be saved.
That is a long hard road to walk and very insecure.
Genuinely for me I felt my works might save me and spent most of Christian life waiting for the 3 strikes and you are out.

Praise God he taught me and worked so much in my life.
The first and biggest work he installed into me was that he loved me full stop.
When the Holy Spirit revealed to me that God loves me as much as he loves Jesus and I am saved by faith through the grace of God I broke down and cried.

It took a while to work through it.
However I would say that the works I focused on was "NOT SINNING"
My focus changed from not being sinless to not sinning less.

However I would say that people I walked with and helped was out of love and compassion for them. Broken hurt people.

Just like I was.
Won't go into it my life experiences are not good.
Shocking childhood rejected by my mum and thrown out in teenage years to be fostered by a Christian family had spending the next six years being sexually abused by my foster dad (side not was sexually abused by a cousin when I was about 8 and I was having to sleep in his bed again would I have to play with his willy it was glossed over)

You mentioned Eph 2:10

I myself hang my hat on

Romans 8:28-30
28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.
29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.
30 Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified.

What saddens me is that most people that I have walked with who are hurting and have been told focus on v28.
The focus is that God makes good all the bad things that have happened to us.
Total rubbish. He cannot make it good. Sin cannot be made good.

I then focus on 29:30

He works good in all the things for those who love him in order to conform them to image of his son.

Now that being the case we will become like Jesus.
We will walk with broken people will help them.

God has used me to walk with people who have suffered like me and the consequences as a result.

I thank God for this because Jesus did this and has helped and is helping me to do it.

What a priveled to be used by God for the right reasons.
Just wanna be Jesus.

I think they are different.
I Cor 3 has to do with preaching teaching.
Basically doctrine.
Simple example "You must be baptized to be saved"

One very hard experience for me was because I did not speak in tongues I was not saved.

For me the concept is not detract from being saved but the doctine taught is wrong but they are saved.

If it departs from saved by faith through grace then that is an issue for me.

The scripture we are discussing is about the positive of working for the Lord. You are bringing out how awful it is to work for the Lord in order to be saved, and of course that would be a dead end. Have you posted this as saying Corinthians 3: 10-15 is all wrong?

We are to learn and understand being saved by faith, but 1 Cor. 3:10-15 Is not speaking of those truths at all. God changed the subject, you haven't followed God in your thinking if you are applying these verses to something God is not applying them to.

yes ... it is amazing how God works in us to bring us to understand His love for each and every one of us. God is so patient with us and He works with us and in us. How long does it take us to understand that we are never going to be "good enough" through our own fleshly works?

I think when we finally get to the point of actually realizing how much God loves us, it is palpable. Me? I ended up on my face on the ground with tears streaming from my eyes. I could not believe that I had been so mistaken concerning His ever abounding love ... that there is nothing I could ever "do" to "earn" that love.

Yes. In our carnality, we want all things to be easy/smooth sailing ... no difficulties. However, reading through Scripture we find God tells us over and over that we will face times of trial and affliction. And through it all, He remains faithful to bring us through ... all the while He works within us to perfect, establish, strengthen, settle us.

I also encourage people to turn to God in times of peace and in times of joy and rejoicing. I think of my own kids. What parent wants their child to come to them only when they are facing difficult times? Don't we want our kids to share their joys and triumphs with us? How sad if we only turn to Father when we face affliction. Why not share the good times with Him? He brings such fullness of joy in our rejoicing!!!

sad that some people claim that born again believers are not saved. talk about causing someone to stumble!!!

I remember growing up my sisters used to tell me I was adopted ... that my mom and dad were not my "real" parents. That's similar to what some do to their brothers and sisters in Christ ... and over the stupidest things. Jesus said A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another - John 13:34-35

How loving is it for a believer to tell another believer they are not a child of God?

1 Corinthians 3:10-11 According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
Precious friend(s), Great Discussion of God's Important Doctrine of Judgment for
All
"members" of The Body Of CHRIST, who have Eternal Life IN Him!
What is your interpretation of the reward in 1 Cor 3? What is your interpretation of the loss in 1 Cor 3?
Great question! As emphasized above, did we take heed about our
"building materials"?:

1 Corinthians 3:11-12 "For other foundation can no man lay than
That is laid, Which Is JESUS CHRIST. Now if any man build upon
This Foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble;"

Two Ideas For these {could be others?}:

gold represents "The DEITY Of JESUS CHRIST"
silver = "preaching The Gospel Of GRACE, According

To The Revelation Of The MYSTERY!"
precious stones = "studying" Rightly Divided The GRACE Doctrines,
And obeying them, In The Revelation Of The MYSTERY
(Romans Through Philemon) Amen?

Or:

gold represents
"The Gospel of GRACE"
silver =
Rightly Divided "study" of The GRACE Doctrines
{Approved Unto God? (2 Timothy 2:15 KJB!)}
precious stones: loving/helping our neighbors / suffering For CHRIST

wood, hay, stubble "saved By GRACE," but ignoring the above, focusing
More on "other works," which
may not necessarily be "sins"...?
Since He (CHRIST) Totally Paid The Penalty for our sins! Amen?

So, what is the reward? Could This Give us a clue?:

2Ti 2:12 If we suffer, we shall also reign with Him {receive "reward"?}:
if we deny Him, He also will deny us {LOSE "reward"?}

Just my thoughts in this Great Discussion! - Be Blessed!

In an Orwellian society, the Party would tell us what 1Cor 3:9-15 means and
that would settle it for everybody.

The downside is that there would be no discussions; no debating. However,
the upside to the downside is that the world would be a lot more peaceful
without disagreements. A world like that is coming.

Isa 11:9 . .The earth will be full of the knowledge of Jehovah as the waters
cover the sea.

According to what these verses say they are about building and work that will not burn with God's fire. That is what the verses say, no mention of preaching or teaching.
It might be good to go through the first 3 chapters of 1 Corinthians. Paul discusses the issue of preaching the Word of God to the Corinthian believers throughout the first 3 chapters:

1 Corinthians 1:

17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.

18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

...

23 But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness;

24 But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.

1 Corinthians 2:

1 And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God.

2 For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.

...

4 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:

...

6 Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought:

7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory

...

13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

1 Corinthians 3:

1 And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.

2 I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.

Personally, I never really thought about whether the "work" which will be revealed by fire consists only of preaching/teaching, or whether it includes all "work" we do. I leave that stuff up to God. I trust Him and His judgment. Not saying that it's not a good thing to consider ... just that I never really considered it.

18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.
...

23 But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness;

1 Cor. 3:10-15 is not about preaching the word, except as it falls into the category of works. We know and all accept that we are not judged by our works for salvation, but it is very unpopular to post anything about God judging us by our works as these scripture tell us, and most posters deny. Both are scriptures.

Paul tells us that we will be judged by our works, these passages tell us the same. The entire book of James has been questioned as scripture because James dared bring it up. John tells us in Revelation that Christ will judge our works. Matthew tells us God will reward our prayers openly. Our prayers are works.

Matthew 16:27 For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.

Rom. 2:6 He will render to each one according to his works:

Rom. 14:12 So then each of us will give an account of himself to God
