Tonight was a case in point.
I'm changing churches, needing one with greater fellowshipping opportunities. I figured it would be rude to simply stop showing up at the church I've been attending, so I went by to say goodbye to a few people. I explained that I was starting to look for a new church. The reactions from my pastor and assoc. pastor were ... indifferent, nonchalant.
I take things seriously. I take people seriously. What for others is apparently meaningless, shallow interaction, means something to me. If we say hi and have actual conversations, and this takes place periodically over almost 2 years, I expect that I mean a tad more to you than, "Oh, okay!" when I say goodbye.

The "church" is largely filled with imposters (and they don't even know it).
1 John 3:14 NET - "We know that we have crossed over from death to life because we love our fellow Christians. The one who does not love remains in death."
I'm nearly 55 and have been "Christian" my entire life. To date, I don't think I've ever stepped foot into a legitimate Church that Jesus Himself would attend.

Jesus said that this would happen to the True Children of the Lord, for this is why the Bible repeatedly tells us that it is the Lord who loves the poor, oppressed . . . the forgotten.
Don't forget what God said, "For my ways are not your ways."
The sooner you realize that you are living in a twisted, backward world, the sooner you will realize that you just might meet the True definition of a Child of God. This is why we were taught to be thankful for our hardships . . . to consider them Blessings.

Consider the principle of the Remnant. The word means that there are few. I'd say that one out of 10,000 people that you cross paths with might actually possess Holy Salvation. And just because a person is attending a church, that number only marginally increases. And this is what makes attending a modern-day church so dangerous . . . we are literally surrounding ourselves with the worst form of corruption there is . . . Spiritual Corruption.
But . . . and this is the good news: You ARE worth forgetting. The last thing that corrupt people want is to have non-corrupt people exposing their issues (or sin). You are good . . . they are not . . . so it is best to ignore and shun you than to invite you further into their nest.
Again, consider yourself the healthy one. It is the sick world that is labeling the good as "sick." Wrong. You are good . . . the world is not.

Gojira, the Bible gives us all kinds of ways to help determine who we are . . . and as you said, to help determine the condition of our heart. For one, are we rude? Are we unkind? Do we berate and belittle others? Or, are we filled with a remarkable form of Love that few are able to relate to? Do you "feed your enemies?" Do you Love them? Do you care about them, or do words of hatred slip off of your tongue (or keyboard) as though they were gliding upon butter?
If your heart has been Spiritually Circumcised by Christ, which is the removal of the Sinful Nature, you will know it, for your life will begin to change and it will only continue in that Godly process. I would recommend to all people that they read the entire New Testament and specifically search out each piece of Scripture that offers itself as a test of who we are.
Below is a small sample by which to compare ourselves. Do we identify with the below Scripture? Is this who we are?
Romans 12:2, 10-12, 14, 16-21 NKJV - 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. ... 10 Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another; 11 not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; 12 rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer; ... 14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. ... 16 Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion. 17 Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. 18 If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. 19 Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, "Vengeance is Mine, I will repay," says the Lord. 20 Therefore "If your enemy is hungry, feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink; For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head." 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

I struggle with all of this. None of it just wells from me. I need to force myself into obedience. Well, I've accepted Christ probably dozens of times, almost totally out of spiritual insecurity. I've gone to Him multiple times and asked Him to show me anything I need to know NOW, before Judgment Day. If I am not accepted, then I don't know what else to do.
Gojira . . . I feel your heart, and it seems very genuine to me. I have studied the Bible for thousands of hours, which includes writing a semi-personal commentary that revolves around Circumcision of the Heart. I am not a "master" of the Bible; I would never suggest such a thing, but I do know this: When we are to read the Bible, we are first to recognize that Power of God. We see this Raw, Almighty Power on full display throughout the Old Testament. Truly incredible. Second, the second most important concept that we should gather is the concept of Spiritual Circumcision. This is the Purpose for Christ, it is the primary Work of Christ (for without it, there is no Salvation), and through this Spiritual Circumcision, we find the Effect of Christ.
So, I am offering to you the below Seven more important and critical verses that you really need to be aware of and know. These Seven verses will show you exactly what to pray for.
Colossians 2:9-15 NLT - "For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body. 10 So you also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority. 11 When you came to Christ, you were "circumcised," but not by a physical procedure. Christ performed a spiritual circumcision--the cutting away of your sinful nature. 12 For you were buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with him you were raised to new life because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead. 13 You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ, for he forgave all our sins. 14 He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross. 15 In this way, he disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross."
Each of these verses are extremely important to understand. They all relate to one another. For example, if there is no corruption in God, there can be no corruption in Christ. If there is no corruption in Christ and if we are in Christ as His Children, then there can be no corruption in us. What is this corruption? It is the Adamic Curse described in Romans chapter 5. The removal of this Curse is the Purpose of Christ, the Work of Christ, and through it, there is the Effect of Christ and His Holy Work. We can only change if our Sinful Nature has been cut away. There is no Salvation if we remain under this Adamic Curse of the Lord.
Skipping to the end, we see that Satan is defeated through Spiritual Circumcision; and doesn't this make sense? If the Curse has been permanently cut away, how can we remain under the power and influence of the Devil?
I wish that we could talk more, as there is so, so much more to discuss. But I assure you of this: If you study Col 2:9-15 and come to know it inside and out, you will see how so much of the Bible points directly towards those Seven perfect verses. They are literally the "Heart" of the Bible.

My sinful nature is still a thorn in my side, motivating me to do things that I need to repent of later. If the sinful nature is supposed to be "cut away", then I am not saved by what you describe above. My 'old man' is alive and... kicking. I try to deflect the kicks, I try to avoid feeding him, but he's stubborn and refuses to give up. I could list my sinful difficulties, but I see no need to do that. I think you get the point.
Even Paul had to battle this. Not sure where this leaves me. I get differing counsel from different Christians, each believing that they are right, and that they are told by Scripture to take the tack they have taken. This is confusion. I've had Christians question my salvation. I've had others affirm it and tell me that I need to rest in Him. Both cannot be right.
