I'm really enjoying the various answers we're getting here -- it's what makes these threads so much fun! It's been a long time since I've been offered free cookies in a public setting, so these things weren't even on my mind when writing this. I'm glad people have brought this up though, especially in the times we're currently living in.

To explain the inspiration for this thread, I have to give a little bit of background information. I have often said here on the forum that I am definitely not a cook nor a baker. It's partially because I don't find cooking particularly enjoyable, but it's even more so because I have always battled eating disorder symptoms, specifically binge eating disorder and bulimic-type issues (I share this for the sake of anyone else who might also be dealing with this.)

Sometimes it's hard to explain this to people when they don't understand why I "just don't try." If I were to learn to cook or bake well, it would pretty much be the equivalent of giving someone who has a problem with alcohol the ability to make their own choice drink at home, thus making what they struggle with not only much cheaper, but readily available.

I try very hard to not buy things like cookies, cakes, ice cream, etc., because sugar is my biggest issue and those things will be devoured within a couple of days if I buy them.

However, I HAVE found a way to deal with my chocolate chip cookie vice -- I buy the slice-and-bake cookies from the refrigerated section, then only bake a few cookies at a time. Sometimes I still go overboard but one package of slice-and-bakes is still less than say, a package of Oreos, so... You've got to take your wins where you can, huh? :)

I've finally learned to resist the urge to bake (and eat) them all, and sure, I could down 8 and then bake the rest, but this also kicks in my backup safety mechanism -- it kicks in my inevitable lazy/cheap button, and I tell myself I don't want to waste the extra electricity by heating up the oven a second time!

Now if it's a plate of cookies I know I can trust, I am most definitely the person who will take 4 cookies and claim I have "friends" to share them with.

The only reason I don't try to take the whole plate is because then my guilt issues will also kick in, nagging at me that the polite thing to do is to leave some cookies for other people to enjoy.

However, the strength of that button may or may not depend on what I think I may or may not be able to get away with at that moment -- and how big of a bag I'm carrying at the time to stash them in.

It's great to see people having fun with this and I hope you will keep carrying on (cookie in hand, or not!)

I said 2 cookies as how could I eat just one no way...I need at least 2. Now if that plate of cookies is at home on my counter and I made them I have no problem downing 6 as they are just too good and I mean you got to test them for quality control as each batch comes out of the oven right?

Now hold up there, Mr. RodB. You qualify for special treatment.

We will gladly trade you 3 cookies for 3 burgers. 😬🍪🍔
but when you could have both burgers and cookies, you get both!

When you run a coffee shop/bakery like he does, you sure HOPE they come through the door.
Indeed. His giving cookies to kids that come through the door threw me because I thought his shop was a future thing, not a now thing.

Adults need cookies too. 🍪😢😉😆

Soft baked cookie, chocolate or custard stuffed, even made like a layer cake, cookie on top and bottom with filling in between, melted chocolate frosting optional, is a thought.

My sweet tooth made me say that. 😁

I'm only going to take one cookie....... every time I walk past the plate.

Unless there's ice cream, in which case I may take two to try to make a homemade ice cream sandwich.

*Seoulsearch -- along with half the forum -- promptly starts lining up in front of JohnDB's door.*

No costume required! :D
I'll get in liner too. On the poll I said 4 or more but the 'more' probably would be the whole plate.

Why are there kids coming through your door?
That video is hilarious. Reminds me a bit of a certain cartoon in which mice, sickened by too much indulgence of cheese, decide to off themselves by running to a cat. He freaks out, wondering what's wrong. His world turns upside down, so he runs to a dog to do him in. The dog doesn't get it, thinks the world's gone mad, and chases a dog catcher to take him away.

What are we? Animals? We see food on a table and, like a dog, jump up and grab however much we can and run away with it?

Oh... the shame of it. Where's Sylvester's son's head bag...

I’m honestly taking the whole plate whenever nobody’s looking.

I've been giving away cookies for decades. I'm kinda infamous for it.

Every Christmas I give out around 1,000 large cookies and over 1,000 pieces of fine chocolate truffles.

I make everything. I got it down pat.

And you are correct that the bakery isn't exactly open yet....it will be soon.

It depends upon how soon we can get a crew hired in.
Health inspection might be this week or first of next depending upon the plumber. Then there's the extra fridge.

That's what is keeping us closed at the moment.

Then it's just a matter of filling the display cases and making it happen.

Truffles? Why am I just learning about homemade truffles for Christmas?!
