In the Old Testament before the law of Moses had come we are introduced to the priest of the most high God who meets and blesses Abram of the most high god.
“And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.
And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:
and blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand.
And he gave him tithes of all.”
Genesis 14:18-20 KJV
at this point in scripture melchezidek disappears from all Mentions of him. Later the leviticle priesthood is given according to the word of the law of Moses and melchezidek simply isn’t mentioned again.
notice this blessing came before tv law and isnt under the ordination of the levites, the sons of Aaron the high priest of the law of Moses.
in the prophets you hear of this order of melchezidek when Christ is referenced
“The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.
The LORD hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.”
Psalm 110:1, ,4 KJV
later we read the book of Hebrews after Christ has come and been taken to be at Gods right hand this has been fulfilled and the priesthood has been changed from the earthly leviticle under the law to the new order of melchezidek with this new ordination of a new covenant and priesthood according to Christs word and not Moses word which made levites the priesthood
“For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law. For it is evident that our Lord sprang out of Juda; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood. And it is yet far more evident: for that after the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest, who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life. For he testifieth, Thou art a priest for ever After the order of Melchisedec. For there is verily a disannulling of the commandment going before for the weakness and unprofitableness thereof. For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God.”
Hebrews 7:12, 14-19 KJV
This is one of the main subjects of the book of Hebrews
“Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus;”
Hebrews 3:1 KJV
“and being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him; called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec. Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing.”
Hebrews 5:9-11 KJV
As we read Hebrews knowing the Old Testament how melchezidek wasn’t a priest of Moses law ot begins to show us thkngs we couldnt otherwise know about the new testsment
“Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; a minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.”
Hebrews 8:1-2 KJV
Eventually we see that there’s a new covenant a new mediator with a new and better word
New priesthood that is far better , a new sanctuary and promised land which is far better
the value of the book of Hebrews comes forth in the study of melchezidek and his priesthood to make a clean severance from what is given under the leviticle order and show us our covenant is the gospel and doesn’t have leviticle priests , nor several Mediators , nor is it ordained of angels but it has come from God the father , through the son to the children
and those children are actually being called into the new priesthood that serves in the heavens
“and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, and hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.”
Revelation 1:5-6 KJV
If you don’t understand the correlation and why this is important it’s okay , but if you do understand there is a lot of importance to this study the book of Hebrews it is a wealth of understanding regarding the old covenant and the new and how the new is so much better than the old
