That's easy. Defense against any script kiddy who might have accidentally got his hands on something that was actually effective.

If I didn't know how to install a system, I would probably be using one myself. For normal people it is imperative that their system not get messed up by any random troublemaker.
Seriously?
Okay, I have a virtual machine with my real IP address and go to a known malware injection site and it hijacks my browser.
‘Then I use another virtual machine with a vpn software changing my IP address.. I go to the same same site and my browser is hijacked.
‘What’s the difference?
Nothing. Vpn has nothing to do with defense mechanism of your device.

You think normal people are going to be running virtual machines?

And they use those browsers a lot for online banking, online shopping, lots of stuff they don't want people hijacking.

Nou. Lol.
The virtual machine example is my proof to you in our geek-to-geek discussion. :D
‘To show that changing your IP address won’t help with a basic malware attack.

What would help would be :
1. Firewalls
2. Content filtering
3. Intelligent link disabling
4. Antivirus

Those are defense mechanisms.
Vpn is used to proxy off a proxy, so someone can bypass all your defense mechanisms while leaving no traces to make it hard for investigators to prosecute you for something illegal. Because a trace is always there but they’re going to make it difficult by hopping off servers in China, Russia and Europe to attack a bank in America.

And when it comes to state-sponsored terrorism, the bad actors don’t even hide their IP address.
‘Hello This is Kim Jong Un taking down your banking network today. This will be quick.
‘Have a great day. I’m gonna lob some missiles over Japan today.

Oh...

All this time I thought you were saying anybody who uses a VPN is automatically up to nefarious deeds. You were instead saying that anybody who uses a VPN is wasting bandwidth on something that is useless for defense, and they should be using other methods. Right?

This is a good illustration of what I always say: if you don't understand what somebody is saying, shutting down communication is the last thing you should do. Just keep talking and everything will get cleared up eventually.

Go back and read your first post. You can see why I misunderstood it, right?

I was starting to wonder why you were so insistent on this. I wondered if maybe people using a VPN were cutting into your business model. Kind of like an abortion clinic that maintains people should avoid using condoms. :p

To be fair it does stop a lot of low and medium low level attacks. And most people who can get around a VPN are not going to bother with somebody's home computer anyway.

Yes I realize that my first post could be confused for what you said but now that you know my position on this you should see that it means that the only good thing about vpn is changing your IP because most people confuse it with some sort of defensive mechanism.

Now don’t get me going when people talk about the “dark web”.

But... But... That's what the people on the news call it! Surely they know what they are talking about.

All right good point.
So then re-look at my second point. VPN is for offense not defense. You agree?
I think you blanket too many people with your presumptions regarding VPN's.

My purpose is personal online security. Period.

Well now that you’ve said it, it’s settled.
It should have never come to having to day it.

As a Christian in a Christian community another Christian should have never jumped to the negative bad intentions conclusion right off the bat by saying through implication my query is one of dark intentions .

I didn't respond at first because I thought it would stop. Not go on and on.

It was settled on the OP.

That your mind went to criminal or dark intent is a reflection on you.

Lol. Look I can see that you’re not understanding on a lot of this stuff here because I was talking to my friend Lynx whos a geek like me.
Nobody is accusing you or anybody else about anything illegal so rest assured.

It’s a technical discussion about the meaning and purpose of VPN.

Your lol is everything.

This is why I know you're not telling the truth.

And are now trying to mitigate your responsibility. Besides the proof in just the lol as your first words in reply.

''Well now that you’ve said it, it’s settled.''

When you're initiating the implication of nefarious motives on my part, being this was my thread start, there would be nothing to settle.

You won't accept that fact.

Your words speak for themselves. You imply and then laugh when asked to accept responsibility for the behavior.
Debating VPN's with someone else is just fodder for your initial implication against my motives for using a VPN.
Rather than apologize you laugh.

I can see that this thread has now taken a different turn.
All right so let me be clear. I will not apologize for your false accusations.

What is your response to that?

You're a bully and a coward.

I've asked this thread be deleted because if the negative turn you injected. I pray it happens.

It’s all good. I’m at peace and not bothered.
‘I was hoping this person would want to communicate but it doesn’t look like it. Looks like they need to vent a lot.

Because they have a lot of tentacles into your operating system cos they want to know more.
‘Google is actually being sued because their “Incognito Browser” mode is not really incognito (or private).
‘Google is the worst for data privacy. Next comes Edge which is slightly better in privacy, safari is next and then independent projects based on Firefox are pretty good in privacy such as PaleMoon etc.
