Obviously it is when you carry it forward and link the scriptures together.

Luke 3:16, John the Baptist ref per above,

16John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:

Luke 24:49 (instructions to the apostles)

49And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.

Acts 1: verses 4, 5, 8

4And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. 5For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.
8But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth

Acts 2:1-4

1And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance

Acts 2:14-18

14But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words: 15For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day. 16But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; 17And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:
18And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:

And the APOSTLES performed many miraculous things and by the laying on of THEIR hands passed the miraculous manifestation of the gifts to others as noted throughout the book of acts such as Acts 5, 6, 8, 19
this does not say what you believe

if people would simply follow what scripture actually says instead of creating painful mashups to try and make it say something else, things would greatly improve

but believe as you will and you will have results that accompany such belief

It would be contrary to ALL Scripture beginning in Genesis and ending in Revelation that the Holy Spirit comes from man to God.
Dear Becki shittim and all Brethren,

UPDATE and TRUTH Challenge

It would be contrary to ALL Scripture beginning in Genesis and ending in Revelation that the Holy Spirit comes from man to God.

EXCEPT When?

In what circumstance(s) does the Holy Spirit go from man to God???

Hint: It is directly related to this thread

Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. This promise belongs to you and your children and to all who are far offto all whom the Lord our God will call to Himself.”
Acts 2:38-39
I've read, and re-read this verse, and I still cannot find where it says "you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, and you'll prove it by speaking in tongues"..... hmmmmm....

We say that these Gifts are still applicable today, but who is issuing the same kinds of healings that Christ and His Disciples issued 2000 years ago? ....
God is still doing it as He did then through the power and authority of Jesus Christ at the hands of those who have been indwelt with His Holy Spirit.

Jesus received the fullness of the Spirit from John the Baptist, He imparted to the 12, they imparted to the 70, and on and on unto today, and those with the gift of Holy Spirit are imparting still today.
It is the same gift, there are not individual spiritual gifts, some are called to work more in one area than another, but they are not separate "gifts", they are all from the same holy spirit working in us and we each should be able to work in each area if He so calls us to.
best wishes
Brother, you really, REALLY need to read 1 Corinthians 12 again.... read it for what Paul is saying, not for what you WANT him to be saying.
It's pretty clear.... we don't all receive the same gifts... we receive what the Spirit gives to us. It IS the same Spirit (there is only one), but there are several gifts, and the Word makes it clear that every believer does NOT receive every gift.
Read the whole discourse about how the church is like a body made up of different parts. Not every part is an ear, not every part is a leg, etc.... each believer has a part to play... a job to do... trying to say that every believer HAS to speak in tongues, or they are not truly infilled with the Spirit is the opposite of what the Word says.

well it really is all about who is understanding what

you have made yourself easy to understand as have several others here
That is good. I intend to be easy to understand. Playing mind games is decidedly un-scriptural.

I don't play mind games. I have no idea why you think I need your advice. The comment you made previously to me, indicates you have not followed the thread very well. I'm not interested in your advice or your snark. Won't bother to respond to you again

We say that these Gifts are still applicable today, but who is issuing the same kinds of healings that Christ and His Disciples issued 2000 years ago? Someone today is raising the dead? Huh . . . how about that. I haven't heard their names as of yet, so perhaps someone can inform us who possesses this gift.

Who, today, has the ability to eliminate leprosy? Who can replace teeth? Who, today, is granting eyesight to those who were born with blindness from birth? Who, today, can restore a crippled set of hands, or legs? Right . . . there isn't one.

These gifts continue today? Really? Do we believe this because we mumble, we think, Spiritual words (where 1/3 of them begin with the letter "z")?

If healings exist today, let me know, as I'd like a new set of teeth, knees, hips, back, eyes, and of course, I'd really appreciate not having prostate cancer . . . so, would one of you wizards of knowledge please inform me who can take care of these physical problems? I'd really like to be healed.
Healing requires faith. Before you go on a tirade, you may want to consider they are Jesus' words, not mine. (Matt. 8:13, 9:22, 15:28, Luke 17:19, Luke 18:42) Matthew 13:58 addresses the fact that unbelief hinders what otherwise could be possible.

There is an answer to what you are evidently experiencing. The scripture involves someone wanting to believe for another's healing, but I believe it holds true either way: "Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth. And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief."

I encourage you to consider seriously James' words:

"Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience.
Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy...

Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms.

Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.

Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." James 5:14-16

May God Bless!

Yes you do because you cannot speak against them but with mockery.

You have stagnated your own development and growth in the Lord by closing your heart and mind to truth.

Many Brothers & Sisters in Christ reaching out to you.
There are many brothers and sisters in Christ who agree with him, as well. I don't find him to be close-minded. That seems to be a convenient catch-phrase to use for someone that simply disagrees with your understanding.

I've been trying, but par for the course, folks refuse to answer some questions and even turn questions into accusations. Good luck getting to the bottom of this issue, for when people refuse to use their brains and rely upon their emotions, disaster is nearly guaranteed.
yeah I’m sort of saying we use our brains toO much and need to just believe what’s explained in the word.

if we were to say the scriptire is explaining all these subjects we try to discuss we can just learn what the scriptures say and then well
Know

I know Christian’s who have the gift of tongues I’ve never thought it was fake or faulty , never thought it wasn’t a spiritual gift anymore ect I just think like most subjects we often don’t really understand as much as we think we do and need to be learning about it still but instead we try to teach about it when we don’t really grasp it ourselves

but we could learn if we learn what the scripture has to say about this and any subject

tongues seems to me ( just my own thought from the scripture I have noticed about it ) seems to be just another manifestation of the Holy Spirit through man in other words it seems to me to be just another spiritual gift meant for the edification of the body of Christ

there are actually a few things said about it that can teach us what we should think about it . If we let the scrioture teach our brain first earth then our brain is going to be working right

there’s alot we can learn from the scriptures is a really basic point but it’s usually what I’m saying , we can learn from the scripture and not have to wonder , it’s the way to find understanding but it’s impossible if we already know everything and then read the scripture and claim it’s not correct

I don’t myself fully understand tongues but I believe what the Bible has to say about it and think we should all do that so we can reach the same conclusions regarding doctrines

I'm pretty sure that has been mentioned already.... the Spirit intercedes for us in our prayers, using words/groanings that we ourselves cannot speak.. the Spirit brings to our Father what is truly on our hearts. We don't do it.... the Spirit does.

My experiences with RA pre-date this thread and is based on much communication with him on differening topics whereby he refuses to acknowledge Scriptural emphasis, clarity and validity.

i have nothing against RA and do appreciate him but he needs to open his heart to the Scriptures.

Whenever any of us close our ears and eyes to "it is written" we will all for short of the Glory of God in some measure.

This pertains to myself and all of us.

Peace

and do not forget the 'utterings' that no man understands but God only, unless there is someone with the gift to interpret

Peter's conversation with the Jewish leaders concerning what the Gentiles experience involves provides insight: "And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning." Acts 11:15

The two experiences:
Peter and those gathered in the upper room, "And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance."

Cornelius and others: "...the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God."
