We didn't conquer. We received a free gift.
Conquerors are not secure. They can be stripped of their conquest by death, life, angels, principalities, powers, things present, things to come, height, depth, or any other creature. We can't be stripped of what we have freely obtained; the love of Christ/God.
Jesus Christ fought and then won the war. He is (and can only be) the victor, as it is impossible for Him to lose. Ever.
We share in His victory thru faith in His completed work.

Not at all odd.....in fact more than fitting given the intent and context.

Rom 8:37
Nay, G235 in G1722 all G3956 these things G5125 we are more than conquerors G5245 through G1223 him that loved G25 us. G2248

G5245 - hypernikaō - Strong's Greek Lexicon (kjv) (blueletterbible.org)
Outline of Biblical Usage [?]
  1. to be more than a conqueror, to gain a surpassing victory
Strong’s Definitions [?](Strong’s Definitions Legend)
ὑπερνικάω hupĕrnikaō, hoop-er-nik-ah'-o; from G5228 and G3528; to vanquish beyond, i.e. gain a decisive victory:—more than conquer.

hyper + nikao = super conquerors
I appreciate the explanation of what it is. Do you have any ideas how it is of practical use to us as Christians? Why more than conquerors? Why not just plain ole run of the mill conquerors?

Yes. Rest in the victory that Christ Jesus has provided. That is how to put that passage into practice.

While that is true, I suspect there is more to the verse than that.

Romans 8:37...Nay, in all things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us.

I've always thought this to be an odd verse. Why are we said
to be more than conquerors and not merely conquerors?
Perhaps it refers back to 8:33?

Even when all of life is against us, we are still “more than conquerors” and
God will strengthen us to live out that glorious victory every day, in spite of
how things look to us, or how we feel about our circumstances. (vs. 33).

We are victorious over all those who would challenge our relationship with
the Lord. God has justified us and nothing will ever change His mind.

I think you are on the right track. Can you think of any examples from the Bible?

What do you suppose God accomplishes by making us co-heirs.... if anything?
That's a huge subject but just to state the obvious, so that all the promises of God in Christ may be ours.

Was there a particular aspect of us being co-heirs that you find particularly relevant.

Romans 8 is about God's Love for us ----nothing can separated us from God's Agape -----

The Greek word for More than conquerors is

Strong's Concordance
hupernikaó: to be more than conqueror

Usage: I am more than conqueror, prevail mightily.

HELPS Word-studies

5245 hypernikáō (from 5228 /hypér, "beyond" and 3528 /nikáō, "conquer") – properly, exceedingly conquer, being "more than a conqueror," i.e. "super-conqueror" who is "completely and overwhelmingly victorious" (L & N, 1, 39.58). 5245 (hypernikáō) is used only in Ro 8:37.

[The intensive prefix (hyper) adds the idea, "surpassing victory" (i.e. of a pre-eminent conqueror).]

I say ----------we are Overcomers ----Because of God's Agape for us we have the Strength to overcome things that we would never be able to overcome without God's Agape for us ------

Romans 8

Our Victory in Christ
26 In the same way the Spirit [comes to us and] helps us in our weakness

28 And we know [with great confidence] that God [who is deeply concerned about us] causes all things to work together [as a plan] for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to His plan and purpose.

31 What then shall we say to all these things? If God is for us, who can be [successful] against us?

32 He who did not spare [even] His own Son, but gave Him up for us all, how will He not also, along with Him, graciously give us all things?

33 Who will bring any charge against God’s elect (His chosen ones)?

I say
We are ---more than conquerors -----and Nothing that can come against us can can ever pull us away from God's Agape for His Children ------this is so powerful and so uplifting and so encouraging -----God's Strength is imparted to us through His Agape for us ------and nothing can destroy that Love

I appreciate your response.
Do you have any thoughts about the possibility that the description of more than conquerors might suggest how we conquer or overcome as you suggest?

You trust in and rely on God who Loves you and will give you the Strength and Protection and Ability to overcome any storm ---misery ----mountain etc that comes against you ------

God allows us to be in circumstances of weakness beyond our ability to overcome personally, and which are often purposefully employed by the enemy for our demise. And God clearly wants us to go through these situations in faith believing all that you have stated.
In the end, as we exercise faith, God intervenes and not only defeats the enemy but uses what the enemy has employed to defeat us to defeat him. Could this be a plausible explanation for why we are not just conquerors, but more than conquerors in Him who loves us?
