Everyone wants to be a prophet, or an apostle, and travel to remote parts of the world. No one wants to be a good nieghbor. Thats boring and ya cant prove to yourself that you are in the faith or self justify by living a quiet life and being of good service to your neighbor.
Imagine that.
How dare you slap us in the face with reality. Let us dream the dream and ignore our neighbor.

Holy smokes.

The gift of prophecy is a gift from the holy spirit,

The prophecy will only come out of your lips because it's being spoken by the holy spirit to somebody who needs help in believing in God. It will be witnessed by two atheists and the prophecy will come true. The atheists will then go on to believe in God.

The prophecy will be spoken to an unbelieving athiest. Once the prophecy has come true the unbelieving person will hopefully believe God is real.

Once the prophecy has been spoken the Gift of prophecy has gone.

If you then go into another place where somebody needs help with believing, the gift of prophecy could come to you again, via the holy spirit speaking through you.

Once the prophecy is finished the gift is gone.

So basically you have recieved a gift and passed it on. But your no longer a prophet until a new gift of prophecy comes.

Let's look to scripture where a born again athiest can also have a prophesy spoke through them from the holy spirit.

All people who feel oppressed please feel to disagree with me.

The born again athiest who speaks a prophesy.

The Parable of the Persistent Widow
18 Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. 2 He said: โ€œIn a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared what people thought. 3 And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, โ€˜Grant me justice against my adversary.โ€™ ( this lady was also praying for God to speak).

4 โ€œFor some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, โ€˜Even though I donโ€™t fear God or care what people think, 5 yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she wonโ€™t eventually come and attack me!โ€™โ€

6 And the Lord said, โ€œListen to what the unjust judge says (the born again athiest where The spirit had spoke through him.);. 7 And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? 8 I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?โ€

The gifts given to each member of the church are permanent gifts. Designed to build the spiritual church.

2 Corinthians 12:27-28
Now you are Christโ€™s body, and individually parts of it. And God has appointed in the church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, and various kinds of tongues.

Anyone can seek the higher gifts which Paul encourages.

The greatest gift above them all is?

the Op is making a mockery of the Holy Spirit and Gifts.

a side thought here:

Jesus created Disciples who became Apostles who created Disciples who created more Disciples and this practice has continued to this very day. Billy Graham had more impact on America than any other professing Follower of Christ, in the complete history of America and Its leaders behind the Pulpit. this does not make Billy Graham a Prophet, but it does show us God could rise up a latter modern day Voice and duplicate similar results. A VOICE that everyone will hear, whether they like it agree with it or not. and no doubt act very much like a Prophet but a Voice used by God.

Hello Gang,
First the gift of Prophecy is and always has been a FORTH TELLING of the word of GOD prior to the completion of scripture that may have included FORETELLING. However the BIBLE is complete the gift of PROPHECY is the ability to proclaim SCRIPTURE authoritative when needed. it not to predict future or claim a word from the Lord that does not come directly out of the Bible.

Thankfully, God is the One who decided which person to bestow a gift upon through His Holy Spirit. However, as Jesus warned us, there are many false prophets in this world. There were many false prophets in the Bible who actually turned away the Israelites so that they would not listen to the true prophets.

We have all kinds of shysters today that are in churches just about everywhere. They have believed lies about themself spoken to them by deceiving teaching spirits...you can find this in scripture...and believe they are special and they welcome voices into their minds that are not from God and so continue to be deceived even further and people who are ignorant of the word and all the warnings contained therein, make a fuss about them and get their ears scratched and they become ensnared much as the original false so called prophet or teacher or even pastor.

You seem to encourage someone here who is most likely, by his own admission, not even saved.

Perhaps you might brush up on discernment. Just a suggestion of course.

Nawww....he's doing OK.
It's all about the clicks.
Christian discussion forums are not exactly a money maker to begin with. They are expensive and require ongoing expensive maintenance. (Update licenses and patches)

As such the building of a stable environment that is frequented by a core group of substance content providers (you and me) is painfully slow. Obtaining membership that is reasonably sane and intelligent even more slow. Interesting? Hey, that went out the window a Loooooonnnnnnng time ago. But there are always a blessed few that make you think.

By far there are a lot of introverts that frequent these forums....as such with the relative anonymity these people who lack most social graces tend to behave outrageously and speak on subjects they have no knowledge or respect for. I'm sure you remember the outrageous claim that someone we both know made about amniotic fluid being baptismal water...and vehemently defended that position. Today we have "Flat Earth", "vaccine is poison", "moon landing was a hoax", "lizard people rule the Earth", "I'm the only one who knows about the rapture accurately", and now "I'm a prophet".

It's discussion forums on the internet....of course people are going to be emotional vampires....whose only pathetic goal in life is to bleed you dry of emotional responses.

However the truth is that we only truly believe those people in our lives that have earned our respect by being a friend....and then only maybe. But we do give these friends serious consideration when they do speak on a subject....because of their consistent behaviors.
No moderation necessary....nobody believes these "Johnny come latelys" anyway.

Many people today do not understand the context of Prophecy and the gift of Prophecy and Prophesying

The Office of the Prophet has been and always will be two-fold. In the Old Testament, Prophets were the Spokesman for God. His Mouth Piece. When they spoke, it came to pass, or they were stoned. If this practice was done today, many self-proclaimed Prophets would resign :).

Prophets spoke of :

  1. Judgment to come
  2. exposed hidden sin and confronted the sinner
  3. Gave warning and guidance in war.
  4. Answered prayers of Kings, Rulers, Preist, and judges.

The office of the prophet is for today, for it is a gift to the church from Christ Himself known in Greek as the "didลmi "

Found in Ephesian chapter 4:7- 13

Spiritual Gifts

7 But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christโ€™s gift. 8 Therefore He says:

โ€œWhen He ascended on high,
He led captivity captive,
And gave gifts to men.โ€

9 (Now this, โ€œHe ascendedโ€โ€”what does it mean but that He also first descended into the lower parts of the earth?
10 He who descended is also the One who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.)
11 And He Himself(Christ) gave" (
didomi) some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers,

12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ,
13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;

This has not stopped. Some of my Cessationist types teach and believe the gifts are not needed based on 1cor 13:8-10. Nothing in the word of God states the gifts are not for today because of the canonization of the bible. Just not there. It is interjected by those who have a bias. Or were hurt by those who used the gifts improperly.

We must read the text in context. 1cor chapters 12 through 14 are unit chapters. The context doesn't start in chapter 13 about the gifts of the Holy Spirit; it starts in chapter 12 and is completed in chapter 14, as they are known as unit chapters. Also, Paul did not write his letter in chapters and verses that was added after to make it easier to read. Again Added. I did not see the red Flag thrown up about that by our Cessationist.

Prophecy โ€“ Foretelling vs. Forth-telling

Foretelling: is the declaration of future events as revealed from the Lord, pertaining especially to the kingdom of God

Forth-Telling: is to utter forth, declare, a thing which can only be known by divine revelation; declare the divine will, to interpret the purposes of God, or to make known in any way the truth of God which is designed to influence people.

That being said, all words spoken, or prophecy/prophesying, must be judged by and in the light of the word of God, Period.
If the word that was said doesn't line up with God's word, it is to be rejected outright.

The gifts of the Holy Spirit given to the church are for the edifying, comfort, and exhortation of the whole body of Christ, as Paul taught in 1cor chapters 12 through 14 chapters. Which is also said in Eph chapter 4.
Those who speak under the inspiration of the Spirit to proclaim the gospel = as Pastors do each time they step into the Pulpit Sunday morning. Or a minister provides a word to a person for the purpose of edification, comfort, and building up, from the word of God.

Many things told to me were godly and correct yet weren't said as it was provided in the word of God, yet the words said could be confirmed by the word of God. That is a gift of the Holy Spirit. Prophesying doesn't mean you are a prophet.

There is a foolish movement going on by some of my Pentacostel friends that suggest if the Pastor and a person who gives what is called a prophetic word and the pastor disagrees, we are to listen to the "prophet." That is Scuballa, and not of order and well disciplined. There are those who today are in the office of a prophet, yet they do not or ever are to replace the word of God. How does one know today if one is prophesying or a prophet today? I am glad you asked. I will tell you in my next post :)

Sorry Clarence, you missed the boat on this one. It is hypocritical to redefine the word, claiming on one hand that prophecy no longer happens, and on the other that prophecy is mere proclamation. The cessationist must decide: either prophecy no longer happens, or it was never foretelling (which is clearly wrong according to Scripture).

The truth is that prophecy (as in foretelling) still occurs. The distinction between modern prophecy and that recorded in Scripture is that God does not intend modern prophecy to be an addition to Scripture. Rather, it's personal or, at most, local.

How does one know today if one is prophesying or a prophet today? I am glad you asked. I will tell you in my next post :)

How can one know if one is a prophet or if the prophesying is from GOD?

This will be as simple as 1, 2, 3.

If you are a Christian, I want you to know God desires to speak to you because HE is the Speaking God. He speaks to his children Primarily from the Word of GOD, and secondly from the Gifts given to the church in the offices provided by Christ himself. And the glue is Prayer.

That being said, we know there are those who are pastors that have abused the office God called them to. Many are well-known and seen on TV or social media. What is the way to properly guard your heart and not be deceived? Great qestion.

1. you must spend time in prayer and the word of God alone daily.
2. you must be attentive to listening and expecting God to answer you
3. You must seek the answer from the word of God and wait for the answer and confirmation.

Confirmation

This is where error happens because of a lack of understanding. The primary person God wants to answer is to you and directly to you from prayer and the word of God. Prophets Never brought direction to or an answer to a person that did not know or who was not seeking it unless it was a warning or judgment. Danel's prayer, Josuha taking of Jerico, Annias sent to Paul, and many others.

The confirmation and word said to you, you will already know in your heart and from the word of God what the answer is when you ask it. You are now just waiting for a confirmation. Which will come in many ways. Your pastor, wife, or friend. Hearing the word preached, and the message is what you are praying about.

It is not something from left field as the lord said you are to marry this person or sell all your stuff and go to Antarctica and preach to Polar Bears. Remember, God wants to answer you, and HE will so be active in listening and waiting for HIS answer and confirmation. Guard your heart to know that the enemy wants to provide you with a counterfeit answer or substitute answer.

Once you are told, "Thus saith the Lord", You will know if it is from God because you know what you were seeking an answer to. If it is something different, pray about it before accepting it. Go to God again if you are pressured. That is not GOD the word of God brings no hardship unless it is judgment, and who seek that those in hidden sin get those words.

If it is to the whole church, it must be judged by the word of God and the elders or mature Christians of that fellowship. This is outlined in 1cor chapter 14.

Forget the person who says, "I'm a Prophet," and judge their work in the office of one.

1cor 14: 32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.
Many things in scripture tell us how to discern a word from those who are prophesying: meaning to speak under the inspiration.

Prophesying is not a new word of God

2 Pet 1:20-21

Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.

For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
The Holy Spirit still moves that way today, yet it is for comforting, edifying, and exhorting and must be confirmed by the word of God or Judged by it

These gifts are to be used and desired but to benefit all.

1tim 4:4 Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.

Rom 12: 6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith;

1cor 14: 1-5

1 Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. 2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. 3 But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men.

4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. 5 I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification.

Prophecy is not solely for the purpose of generating scripture.

Prophecy is integral to the building of the church as are the other gifts.

Revelation 19:10
For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

I would assume that you believe that the gift of teaching, knowledge, etc, have also ceased?

All the miraculous gifts or manifestations of the Spirit have ceased since they all were enabled by the laying on of the apostle's hands who are all dead. And the gifts are no longer as they were on the early church, which were necessary build and edify the body of Christ. We have the written word now as well which is the complete word of God wherein they did not in biblical times.

That is not true. laying on of hands was not listed as a gift from the Holy Spirit. Therefore, it still continues. James 5 says to anoint with oil and lay on hands call for the elders it says nothing to call for the Apostles.

Heb 6:1-3
1 Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, 2 of the doctrine of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. 3 And this we will do if God permits.

The gifts of the Holy Spirit given by the Holy Spirit did not require a hand to be laid on to receive them. 1cor chapters 12 through 14 don't even suggest that as we see in fact in the book of Acts the House of Cornelious

Acts 10: 44
While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.

There is no recording of hands being laid. Also Anias who was sent to Paul was not an Apostle but a disciple he laid hands on Paul.

Acts 9:10,12, 17

10 And there was a certain disciple at Damascus, named Ananias; and to him said the Lord in a vision, Ananias. And he said, Behold, I am here, Lord.
12 And hath seen in a vision a man named Ananias coming in, and putting his hand on him, that he might receive his sight.

17 And Ananias went his way and entered the house; and laying his hands on him he said, โ€œBrother Saul, the Lord Jesus,[fn] who appeared to you on the road as you came, has sent me that you may receive your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.โ€

To your first comment, I didn't say nor infer mor do tge scriptures that laying on ofvtge apostle's hands was a gift of the Spirit. The various gifts are listed in 1 Cor 12:8-10. The laying on of the apostle's hands was the power promised to them by the Lord per Luke 24:49.

Read Acts 6:6-8 and the account of Stephen and the laying on of the apostle's hands as relates to the wonders and miracles he performed thereafter, and Acts 8:14-19 and the apostle's laying on of hands on the Samarians and Simon the sorcerer wanting to purchase the power that the apostles possessed, and the account of Paul having to lay his hands on the Ephesians in Acts 19 for them to receive the gifts.

And you are not understanding the Cornelius issue in Acts 10 which was not the norm nor was it the norm in Acts 2 with the Spirit falling first without laying on of hands. In both those instances, it fell unilaterally as a sign to those present and in both cases it fell in that way for a specific reason: to establish the 1st church in Jerusalem and likewise the 1st Gentile church in Caesarea.
