Our salvation is from sin (Matthew 1:21) and it is by the Torah that we know what sin is (Romans 3:20), so while obedience to it is not a precondition for salvation, being a doer of the Torah is a condition because it is intrinsically part of what the content of God's gift of salvation is. If God is a legalist for commanding His people to obey the Torah and Christ is a legalist for living in sinless obedience to it and for spending his ministry teaching his followers to obey it by word and by example, then we should all be legalists. The problem in Galatians with the Judaizers was not with people teaching Gentiles to follow Christ's example of obedience to the Father that he set for us to follow.

The second truth is far more important than knowing what sin is. The Bible also says that all men have a conscience, so they already know what sin is. But they do not know the remedy without hearing or reading the Gospel.
