It is rather interesting how he has shed his hillbilly ways.
Now he's gone way past Mr. and Mrs Driesdale on the social ladder, probably got proud and identifies with big $ than middle Americans.
I've been around that type.

I have a heart for the old Jed and Granny Clampet.

šŸ„¹
This is one of the best scenes I've ever heard in a comedy. There's so much truth here. Jed's a humble common man who never seemed the least bit covetous.
This is the perfect illustration of 1 Timothy6:6 But godliness with contentment is great gain.

Thank you for posting this. We have much to be grateful to the Lord for.

Yes, my apologies, I did not mean to be critical of you or imply anything you said was inappropriate...

Just that the term itself is often seen as a pejorative when used by others/outsiders.

Hill folk often being seen as uneducated, isolated, and often poor.

I think off Dolly Parton and Leanne Morgan (whose humour I really like!)...

You know I'm a West Virginian and I know a lot of folks don't like the hillbilly reputation. The US media always makes fun of our state. I just own it; although I've always identified as a Mountaineer. . Then I remember my old favorites like Dudley Doright who was a Mounty. So you all have Mounties and we have Mountaineers. We have hillbillies and you all have Red Green. We like Canadian country folks.
I think Vance is from Ohio.
West Virginians laugh when we hear someone from Ohio say they have hillbillies.

That is a great scene, thank you for sharing.

The phrase "star maker machinery" applies to JD Vance.

Well, he DID graduate from Yale law, correct? Sounds to me like he grew up dirt poor with an addict for a single mom, and in spite of it, became successful.
Everyone has flaws, but to discount his early journey in life is to do him a dis-service... he's come a long way.

I think it's called "bettering yourself".
Would you prefer he act like an un-educated redneck hillbilly all his life? It's amazing to me what some people "find" to criticize.

MOST people would admire someone that came from practically nothing, to become a success story..... most people.

There was no substance, no insight, no real solutions. I think the spirit of it was very humanistic and had a lot of appeals to the flesh rather than being rooted in humbly walking with God, or even just looking hard for the truth. It felt like his faith was more in Trump and the Republican party than in God.

I had read up on his background. His resume sounds impressive. He said he converted to Catholicism, though it's not clear what from; his family was some type of Protestant. He actually had a Hindu 'blessing' as part of his marriage which shows a concerning lack of discernment. He is said to be in basically the right camps on social issues.

I had read up on potential options and their strengths and weaknesses but didn't know them well enough to keep them all straight. He has clearly been chosen for his youth, working-class upbringing, and similarities to Trump, though there are probably other reasons too. Trump said he would pick someone he thought could really be president. Not living in Florida, Trump's home state also prevented problems that would have existed with other candidates.
So you would be solidly for Joel Osteen as president, because he ostensibly is a "Godly" man? Do you want to establish a "Christian" government? Or a government that does what is best for ALL the citizens, no matter their religion, or lack thereof...

We are not electing a "spiritual leader" We are electing, hopefully, men/women that will lead this nation to its betterment.

IF they are Christian, so much the better.... but to hold that out as a requirement is foolhardy. Name ONE president that has been a truly Godly man... several have had good traits, and claim to be Christians (between them and God)... but the only one that I have witnessed in my lifetime has been Jimmy Carter. And he was a borderline disaster as a president. Wonderful man, but not a good "decision maker" in domestic financial issues and international issues.

This just blows my mind. His wife's family are apparently Hindu. To have a Hindu "blessing" in their marriage ceremony seems absolutely normal to me...... but YOU see it as a lack of discernment? Good grief.

Would you rather that he had been chosen for the same reasons that Kamala was chosen? Because of her skin color? Or would you rather he had come to political prominence the way Kamala did? By sleeping her way into political appointments with a person twice her age?

I read he wasn't keen to get the US involved in a war in Ukraine. I just hope he has the same view about getting the US involved in a war in Israel.

So you are calling him a liar in describing his early life and upbringing? Seems to me there are PLENTY of people that knew him, and knew his family history that can corroborate it.... but I'm sure you know the true inside story.... smh incredulously...

He doesn't have the same view.
Wrong again, snowflake... these are quotes from that ultra-conservative bastion of news.... the Al Jazeera network....

"Vanceā€™s staunch support for a strong US-Israel relationship rests on his view that the country is essential to protecting US interests in the Middle East, according to Seth Eisenberg, CEO of PAIRS Foundation, a US-based organisation.

ā€œVance supports continued military aid to Israel, emphasising that a secure Israel contributes to regional stability and aligns with American strategic interests. He advocates for close diplomatic and defence cooperation, recognising Israelā€™s role as a democracy in a volatile region,ā€ Eisenberg told Al Jazeera."

"He is part of a stream of Republicans arguing for a hands-off approach to foreign policy. That policy prioritises US interests, is dubious about military intervention, and questions the USā€™s longstanding approach to global alliances."

Well, perhaps you mis-quoted what you WERE addressing, because that is what I responded to.

Clarify.... what were you addressing?

Wow really? You see nothing wrong with claiming to be a Christian and yet joining in false religion!?! Clearly you don't begin to understand the spiritual significance.

I have a friend who's in-laws are Hindu. Her husband isn't, but neither is he yet a Christian. When her husband therefore joined in a Hindu ceremony for his parents, my friend got really sick. And it was God who indicated the connection between the two.

But even apart from health, a real Christian would want purity and righteousness, which this kind of spiritual compromise most certainly is not. The one caveat I see is that I'm not sure if this event happened before or after he claims to have become a Christian.

1 Corinthians 6:9-10 GNT
[9] Surely you know that the wicked will not possess God's Kingdom. Do not fool yourselves; people who are immoral or who worship idols or are adulterers or homosexual perverts [10] or who steal or are greedy or are drunkards or who slander others or are thievesā€”none of these will possess God's Kingdom.
1 John 5:21 (KJV)
Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.
1 Corinthians 5:11 (GNT)
What I meant was that you should not associate with a person who calls himself a believer but is immoral or greedy or worships idols or is a slanderer or a drunkard or a thief. Don't even sit down to eat with such a person.
2 Corinthians 6:15-18 GNT
[15] How can Christ and the Devil agree? What does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? [16] How can God's temple come to terms with pagan idols? For we are the temple of the living God! As God himself has said, ā€œI will make my home with my people and live among them; I will be their God, and they shall be my people.ā€ [17] And so the Lord says, ā€œYou must leave them and separate yourselves from them. Have nothing to do with what is unclean, and I will accept you. [18] I will be your father, and you shall be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty."
1 John 3:7-10a NASB1995
[7] Little children, make sure no one deceives you; the one who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous; [8] the one who practices sin is of the devil; for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil. [9] No one who is born of God practices sin, because His seed abides in him; and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. [10] By this the children of God and the children of the devil are obvious: anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God...
Matthew 7:21-23 NIV
[21] ā€œNot everyone who says to me, ā€˜Lord, Lord,ā€™ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. [22] Many will say to me on that day, ā€˜Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?ā€™ [23] Then I will tell them plainly, ā€˜I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!ā€™

Fighting deception is itself deception.
