Peter cut off the ear of Malchus. Although Jesus rebuked him, he did not question why he had a sword.. 🤔

Jesus told them to buy a sword.
There must've been a reason.
Peter just didn't use it for the correct reason.

Why were they to buy a sword?

Exodus 22:4

Easy-to-Read Version

“If a thief is killed while trying to break into a house at night, then no one will be guilty for killing him. But if this happens during the day, the one who killed him will be guilty of murder.

Difference, one can see if he was armed.

That's an excellent verse to show that we have the right to defend our lives and family. Thank you, we both know Jesus didn't nullify that law, but said in Luke 22

37For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end.

Since He wasn't there to establish His reign upon Earth as prophesied in Micah for a future time, where there would be peace and no more use for weapons, He would instead die for the sins of all time. He was going to be reckoned among the transgressors. You recognize this fulfillment from the gospels. He was considered a criminal amongst the thieves crucified on both sides of Him. This was the Father's purpose that Jesus fulfilled.

That said, there would continue to be crime upon the earth and many threats where a sword would be a necessary tool. When Jesus conquers Satan's armies, there will be peace for a thousand years and no need for such tools for protection. Micah 4:3

3And he shall judge among many people, and rebuke strong nations afar off; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.

Jesus made it a big priority for His disciples to have a sword just like the Roman soldiers carried.
And He healed the poor soul that had his ear cut off. And the disciples had two swords between them. I do not recall anywhere in the book of Acts or the epistles where any believer used a sword to defend himself. I don't know why Jesus instructed the disciples to get swords.

The equivalent to an AR15 in those days would not be a sword. It would be a ranged weapon, such as a Ballista or at least a bow and arrow.

All right folks, let’s buckle up.

NO YOU DON’T NEED A GUN !
IVE NEVER HAD A GUN. TAKE THAT SECOND AMENDMENT !
Yes, I do need a gun. Nobody is forcing you to have one. The 2nd Amendment is about the freedom to have one of you want one. Take that.

Actually I did think of another joke on another thread when I said that when I hit the lottery I will buy a tank and an F16 jet and park them in downtown Boston.
Then when I come out of my apartment I will say the following to the people of Boston.
Residents of Boston.
The city ordinance hours are from 11PM to 7AM. I operate my tank and my jet from 7:01AM until 10:59PM.
Thank you and call me if you have any questions.

Rifles don't assault. People do.
I do not propose outlawing guns. It's impracticable for a start. Cars don't kill people either, but there are controls on who can drive and in what condition they are in. Is it acceptable in America for someone to drive a semi if they have no licence to do so? Who needs an 18 wheeler to drive the kids to school? That's my point. No one outside of the military or security forces "need" an assault rifle.

There's no correlation at all. Drinking is a privilege. Bearing arms is a right. Again, there are no "assault" rifles. They are neutral. Assault is an action by a person.

Says you. Vehicles don't crash by themselves either. No one gives the keys of a semi to a novice driver.

Poor soul? He was there to capture and kill Jesus. That damned soldier was on the wrong side. He should have fallen on his face before the King to beg for forgiveness. Had he believed on Jesus, he would have been saved.

Like other times, Peter didn't understand the circumstances. He misused his weapon trying to defend Christ from His mission, to die for the sins of all humanity. He stated this in 22:37

Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one. 37For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end.

A. The command to buy a sword was not given to soldiers, law enforcement or security forces. This was to His disciples.

B. The reason is because He was going to be reckoned among the transgressors. What this means is explained in the next chapter.

32And there were also two other, malefactors, led with him to be put to death. 33And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.

Because of false teaching by the rabis and teaching priests, the Jews not only expected the Messiah to conquer their enemies but to rule as their King on Earth. There are prophesies we all know to this in more details about the end times of His second return. After that there will be peace and no need for assault or any other weapons of war. The only verse the united nations security forces quote is the one from Isaiah's prophecy concerning pounding their swords into plowshares, Isaiah 2:4, with their icon of a revolver with the barrel tied in a knot. That's a civilian weapon.
They are working towards having a monopoly of force, to conquer the world and disarm the people. What happens after peace keepers do that is to kill their enemies. The last century teaches us that.

The Lord's first advent was not to bring peace, but to make the way for all to have the opportunity of receiving His gift of life. When someone tries to steal that life as a murderer, He gives everyone the right to defend themselves. The Sword is an equalizer that helps to defend us from the evil.
He gives that right to every decent person to defend their people.
He did not bring peace and is not ruling earth with His rod of iron.
He provided the command to purchase the means to defend our loved ones in this hideously violent world.

Why did He command them to buy a sword?
Answer: Because He was to be reckoned among the transgressors.
There would be no peace until He establishes it Himself. In the meantime, buy a sword.
