Great!

However, this thread is about dating apps, and unfortunately it's already gone off the rails.

InIn respect to the person who started the thread, if you're wanting to have a normal conversation, it should be in a different thread.

You can either start your own, or I would invite you to join us in many of the other threads we start in Singles and Family.
Then I'm sorry, there's no normal conversation around dating app, for the apps themselves are not "normal", they're a scam.

Let's just say the odds are slim but they make $$$ regardless. You'd be better meeting someone from CC or something.

Alright, so far I haven't seen any. I personally believe the purpose of this board should be enouragement for one another to defy the dating culture, the "happily ever after" and the "relationship escalator" narrative, to reject the shaming of singles, not to find partners in order to fit in.

We could talk about creative and critical thinking, about intellectual diligence in the onslaught of AI, about how to read and write for ourselves, keeping our mind sharp while we still can. I'm curious to see what's your take on that. My "nastiness" against dating is just part of my creative and critical thinking against the conventional narrative of the "relationship escalator", from love at the first sight to the walk down the aisle.
Well most of us here read abd write for ourselves, this is a written form of communication after all. As for the onslaught of ai, I still haven't realky used ai because I don't want a computer to do my thinking for me and ai is only as objective and moral as its programmers and trainers. I can't help but see parallels between the rise of ai and the backstory to the dune universe where they created thinking machines that ruled over an indolent humanity, until the humans rebelled and destroyed the machines then had to create schools to train human minds again. I also wonder about how much productivity we've lost to entertainment as now we sit in front of the tv instead of occupying our minds with questions of the universe. And I wonder sometimes if loss of the internet would be a net benefit or net harm to humanity in the long run. Have you had any similar thoughts?

You're misunderstanding what I'm saying.

What I mean is, when someone posts a thread, they hope that people will stick to the topic of the thread. People will always go off track at least a little bit, but to try to start a conversation about completely different topics than the intent of the thread (like AI, as you mentioned,) is disrespectful to the original poster.

That's why I said, if you're wanting to have a different conversation, you either need to make your own thread, or move it to another thread where people are talking about that topic.

Or how about this - let's say, the classic trajectory of the boomers, enroll in college, date a girl, nail a regular job, get married, climb the corporate ladder, breed kids, move to suburb, buy a townhouse, raise your kids to repeat the same, and save for retirement. That is all gone. The dating culture itself is not inherently good or evil, it is a generational thing, it's not like blokes were taking girls out for a hunt as a date since the stone age. If there were any sliver of hope for dating, it was all killed by dating apps.

I'll meet you halfway on that.

There's no shame in seeking a partner, especially if God is leading you to do that.

But I agree with you about giving people hope that there is a chance for a good life, even if one is or remains single, and no single should be shamed for being so.

This is why many of us share our stories here -- to inspire and hopefully show other singles that life on your own (with friends) can still be a life directed by God -- and, sometimes you might even (gasp) have fun!

Loss of social media would be a net benefit, loss of internet, though, not necessarily. I still need it to collect materials, genuine human made materials before the dawn of AI.

Maybe it is all about the English word, date.

Date, meaning 2 or more people having a get together. But secular society thinks that means 2 people sleep together.

In my circle, we can even casually say 2 sisters have a date planned.... which is normal.

Most Christian society thinks dating means one man and one woman have exclusive friendship, aiming for marriage. If no more aiming for marriage, this exclusive friendship will end. But can still have regular non exclusive friendship.

You might want to do some searches for the topics you're interested in -- and many of them will be outside Singles.

I've seen a couple of threads about AI, and that's just been in the last few weeks.

I don't believe God is leading me to that. God has blessed me with abundance that would make my peers green with envy, including a rent free apartment in the city I inherited from my grandparents. What he didn't give me though is a woman, never met one in any private capacity, I'm not attracted to any either, and I'm content with it.

Or how about courtship? Dalliance? Arrangement? Tryst? Rendezvous? Frolicking? The only normal thing here is a shrinking vocabulary.

Yes, we know. :)

And that's great that God has blessed you! 🙏🏼

But God leads different people to different things.

Many of us here in Singles are headed toward retirement thinking/age, and as I said, one of the things we're finding we really enjoy is traveling together.

We hope to inspire others to do the same, or at least, to see that single life doesn't have to be one of doom and gloom.

It's of the world. I stay out of the world (as much as possible). I'm old and can tell stories I don't even believe. The world is LOST. The good news is Jesus has overcome the world. Find those you can love and let the Lord. You should definitely stay away from dating apps. I suspect you want more and that's good.

That said, not everyone is at the same place and we just hope and pray they entertain these apps with caution and MASSIVE discernment.

If I was looking, I wouldn't expect to find what I was looking for on a web site anyway. But I'm not everyone.

I was married once and no one will ever get what she got from me. Wanting a family was a one time thing as far as I'm concerned. I didn't get it, my fault. I'm a familyless family man. It can be rough sometimes. But I'm free, praise the Lord.

My epiphany is the classic stoic view, that whatever God trusts you with, whatever God puts in your path, be a good steward and take good care of it, that's your talent allotted to you; whatever God does NOT trust you with, does NOT put in your path, don't covet, let it go. You can't control what happens to you - or what does NOT, you can control how you react to it.

Courtship, yeah, not bad.

Arrangement, not bad, but all the successful arrangements i know, they still let couple to court each other for some time, let the couple make final decision. So basically that is a introduction with intention.

May you find family in God.
