How would you answer the question, “What is lucky?”

My wife was asked this by a total stranger, an Uber driver. Using Las Vegas casinos as a backdrop she explained that only fools would ever depend on luck. She then gave this woman a quick Bible study. I thought she nailed it.
Given this scenario, what Bible verses would you use to answer the same question?

Luck is a concept from Greek idolatrous religion. It goes against the Word of God. "Luck" depends on the whim of a demonic power. God's way is reaping what you sow. (Galatians 6:7). One well known, very successful Aussie was asked about her luck. She replied, "It's funny, the harder I work, the "luckier" I get".

After telling the woman that anyone who believed in luck was a fool, she then told her that there was a reality and delivered a condensed summary of Hebrews 11. I have been thinking about it and I don’t know that there is a better Biblical answer.
 
lucky is something wonderful that came to someone by no work, chance, gambling or just plain happenstance. it is something unexplainable just as if something negative occurred to someone. but sometimes, if you try your best, even though odds are strongly against you, you'll succeed. i once threw a rock 567' feet. i believe part of that was luck. my business partner & i often would have rock throwing contests. i won every contest. but when it came to shot-put, he won every contest. i always thought that was strange. i say luck because in 1988 i was not born again. i'm saying that because in a Christian's life there is no such thing as fate, chance or luck, it's all blessings.

Nope. Nothing "just happens". The ancients recognised this even thought they sought "luck" from exactly the wrong source. It's why they offered sacrifices to false gods and worshiped them. Satan has power even over nature. He sent the storm that Lord Jesus rebuked. You don't rebuke something entirely natural and coincidental.

I had an occult spirit before I was saved. I had a certain amount of power over people. My conscience knew it was wrong, so even as an unbeliever I did not pursue it. Many others seek great powers. Some will sell their soul to Satan. We will discover that many highly successful and super rich people got there by Satan's "blessing". God warns against getting involved with the occult for very good reasons.​

Luck, is the secular word people use when they don’t want to acknowledge sovereignty, causality, or responsibility.
It’s the vocabulary of randomness invented to avoid the weight of meaning.
Scripture never treats human outcomes as statistical accidents; it treats them as the collision of providence, character, and moral order. “Luck” is the name people give to events when they refuse to see the hand that shapes them or the choices that led to them.
In biblical terms, luck is a category error: the righteous prosper because God upholds them, the wicked fall into the pit they dig, and the “random” events of life are the unfolding of a world governed by a God who is never surprised.
In other words, luck is what people say when they don’t want to say God or consequence.

There is one aspect related to "luck" that has not been acknowledged here: probability.

With a standard (and properly balanced) six-sided die that is thrown randomly, there is a one-in-six chance that any particular number will come up on top. With the next random throw, there is again a one-in-six chance of the same number turning up. However, when you start combining probabilities, you don't add them (one in twelve) but you multiply them, so the probability of a '5' turning up twice in succession is one in 36, and three times is one in 216. Beyond that the chances diminish rapidly. Casinos bank on people not understanding these laws of probability.

Probability plays a significant but often ignored role in everyday life. People wrongly attribute to luck what is actually simple mathematical probability.

the dictionary meaning of luck is this: success or failure that happens by chance. rather than tru your own effort, skill or planning. random events occur every day on earth. it could be a book fell off a shelf because of the vibration of someone was playing the drums. a falling tree can be a random event. i differ from your belief.

Dictionaries are the product of the world. The dictionary will tell you that people can choose their gender. God says otherwise. Satan is the god of this world system. The world is under his control. I do not wish to glorify Satan by saying more, but I can assure you that I know what I'm talking about.
 
There are those who feel that God controls and directs every aspect of their life. Others feel that there are many random events that are not demonic but simply governed by the mathematics of probability. I once experienced the loss of thirty five straight rolls of the dice in the board game Risk.

Luck is impossible per those who believe God micromanages the movement of every atom and every volition.
Although I believe material creation manifests God in the physical dimensions of space and time, I think Scripture
indicating humans have volition means that God’s omniscient foreknowledge does not predetermine their spiritual choice
regarding the satisfaction of God’s requirement for salvation or else moral responsibility would be abrogated/nullified.

I find it simpler/better to think that God merely tweaks the river of history occasionally to keep if flowing in the direction He intends, but He allows the fish to swim as they wish. IOW, God allows eddies in the river of salvation, but the confluence eddies form does not prevent God from answering prayers or causing coincidences that are miraculous. I have experienced a few of those, which I believe are different from lucky swirls.

I just thought of the backdrop I typically use instead of casinos, which is world politics. It feels like we are on a train and cannot get off, while at the same time I feel free to vote for the destination.
