Hi all, I'm a 68 y.o. male who has wanted to be a Christian my whole life but have never quite been convinced. I'm surrounded by friends and even family who are not and I've never felt that I have the facts to successfully defend a decision to take the full plunge. My parents were Methodist and I have attended several Churches in my time as an adult, at one I even regularly hosted a Seeker's group in my home. I prefer the more modern non-denominational Christian churches.

So without further ado let me post a couple of questions I hope you can help me with:

1. How do Christians explain the fossil record? I know that Jesus made a statement essentially saying that he wasn't sent to contradict/repudiate what had been written but to validate it. It would be much easier for me to fully accept the New Testament without the Old, but if I have to believe the Lord created every creature as it is now I have a problem with that.

2. I also find it hard to believe that a loving God would create beings and place them in a world based on provable facts that literally trains us to not believe anything we can't verify and then require us to have faith, and if we don't burn us forever in hellfire (there's that Old Testament again).

Those are my biggest sticking points that I'm happy to discuss and I appreciate and feedback.

Alan

You posted some interesting questions. I recommend that you create a thread and post these questions in the Bible Discussion Forum. I'm sure that this will start a most interesting dialog.

Glad to have you join us. Welcome to CC.

I had those questions in 1968 and found the following answers that are discussed in more detail in my thread "Apologetics: Witnessing to Atheists", but briefly I agree with those who believe God is revealed via creation, which is studied by the physical sciences, including paleontology, and via Truth/Logos, which manifests metaphysical reality. Their intersection is indicated in Genesis 1 and John 1, which speak of God creating the physical world via the Logos/Word, and by Romans 1:20, which says creation reveals God's power and (moral/loving) nature. Permission to believe creation took longer than six 24-hour days is granted by 2Peter 2:8. Science seeks to answer how and when; Scripture answers who and why.

You are correct to believe in a loving God, who created humans who operate via faith rather than robots that operate via being programmed, because that would have been too easy. Because death is verified, it is logical to seek salvation/resurrection to heaven, which is given to all who reflect God's love, logically enough (Rom. 5:5). Hell is where/when justice is achieved via something like reaping karma in accordance with the life for life principle, after which evil souls are destroyed.

Again, my complete answer with Scriptural support is in the other thread, but I can copy and paste it here if you desire.

Hello Perpetual Seeker, first off, since I see that you are a new member, welcome to CChat 👋:)

1. How do Christians explain the fossil record?
Here are a couple of resources for you to consider, for starters anyway (the following sites and the main documentary/movie from the Is Genesis History? site give evidence for a Young Earth Creation, just FYI).

It may be helpful for you to understand who the cast is for the documentary, so here they are:
Of course, there is also Theistic Evolution for you to consider too, which attempts to show how the two sides (Evolution and what the Bible has to say about the Creation) can be harmonized.

I know that Jesus made a statement essentially saying that he wasn't sent to contradict/repudiate what had been written but to validate it.
I don't believe that what He said (in the Sermon on the Mount .. Matthew 5-7) has anything to do with Creation/Evolution, but here it is anyway.

Matthew 5
17 Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.

It would be much easier for me to fully accept the New Testament without the Old, but if I have to believe the Lord created every creature as it is now I have a problem with that.
This is a bit of a different topic, and since this post is already a long one, I'll stop here for now (and talk about the point above in my next post (Dv).

May the Lord bless you in your seeking to find Him and know Him!!

p.s. - one last thing, since you told us that you've been a lifelong Christian seeker, what is it about Christianity that makes you want to become a Christian  (if you don't mind me asking)

We don’t know all that. Many Christians just asked Jesus to take control of our lives, and then we started figuring out what happened later. In my opinion, God loves persons such as you that are very intelligent. But much of the spirit realm doesn’t always make sense intellectually. Your life won’t end though if you ask Jesus to come into it. He will only enhance it. And He will give you wisdom and revelation to discover the mysteries that you have. Coming to God is relying on Him to give us the answers. Christians will always let you down. That is by design, so that you won’t look to men, but to Jesus for the example and answers. I hope that helps.

Fossil records: there is a theory that there was a creation prior to Adam and Eve. This is based on an alternative translation in Genesis 1:2. "Was" can as readily be translated as "became". The same word is used of Lot's wife, who was a living woman but became a pillar of salt (Genesis 19:26).

This theory allows for an old earth but a more recent restoration of life on the earth. The first creation was destroyed by flood. I'd explain, but that would require pages of text. Look up Larry Ollison if you want a better explanation.

One of the facts that scientists cannot explain is the "Cambrian Explosion". Vast numbers of creatures suddenly (in geologic terms) appeared with no obvious cause. Fossils actually help to support the Creationist view. The other problem for science is that there is no way of verifying historical events and timescales. No one was there to observe it apart from God Himself and his angels!

There is a principle in science of "inference to best explanation." For example, According to Bill Gates, "DNA is like a computer program but far, far more advanced than any software ever created." I think he might know a thing or two about programming.

What is the inference? DNA is a program. It therefore requires a programmer. If it is a vastly superior program, then the intelligence behind it must be vastly superior also. Is there a better explanation? Evolutionists run themselves ragged trying to find one. They fail miserably.

Evidence: God has given us the evidence that we need. A creation requires a creator. The one thing that no rationalist can explain is life. It's just there. Where did it come from? The problem is not that man has insufficient evidence. It is that he loves his sin, loves his independence and loves his proud rebellion. He justifies himself by blaming God.

Some have said, "Why does God not reveal Himself? Why does He not come down to earth?" Well, if God came in His Spirit form, nothing could survive. God is a consuming fire and all that is evil would be burned up. So God came in the form of man, Jesus. Jesus did what God wanted him to do and said what God wanted Him to say. Jesus could rightly say, "If you have seen me, you have seen the Father".

Jesus spent 3-1/2 years healing the sick, raising the dead, forgiving sin and casting out demons. For that, He was murdered.

People reject God because they love sin and hate God's ways. It's really that simple.

John 3:19 & 20

"And this is the verdict: The Light (Jesus) has come into the world, but men loved the darkness rather than the Light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come into the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed."

Before the flood people lived a lot longer than they do today. Presumably animals diid as well. Since reptiles get bigger the longer they live, some my have gotten very big. Also, people did not have permission to eat meat until after the flood. One might imagine the Mastadon was a little slower than the elephant.

Faith (or trust) is the result of what we see as true. For example, we know the sun will rise tomorrow either because we understand the rotation of the earth, because we have always seen it so and have come to trust in it, Faith does not require achievement, intellect, or strength.

As an intellectual exercise it can be useful to consider the following two articles to give a context to creation;

1. How do Christians explain the fossil record?
So how do you believe the Egyptians built the pyramids, by quarrying the limestone blocks and stacking them on top of each other?

The reason I ask is because fossils are almost exclusively found in sedimentary rock. The pyramids are constructed out of limestone, with the except for a few pieces of granite. So what is the correlation between the fossil record and the pyramids?

Would you believe that the limestone blocks used to build the pyramids were made in place. Since most Christians will either deny it, or claim they already knew it, I guess your response will tell the tale.

This video goes into deeper detail.

'Sometimes it is more beneficial to stand on one's own personal belief and stay
away from the endless opinions and assumptions which will surely cause more confusion.
I believe there are many things never to be known, and actually no need to know,

Hello and welcome to CC! :)

The fossil record is easily explained by a straightforward reading of Genesis. God created many kinds of plants and creatures then later caused a flood that killed most of them. The flood was quick and violent enough to trap them in mud and preserve them.

Scripture tells us plainly that there are things that cannot be seen. Our senses are generally reliable but not exhaustive. Faith is the dividing line between those who acknowledge God (and put their trust in Him) and those who reject anything “unsensable”. It’s the narrow road between the certainty of a visible, comprehensible God and automatons who cannot do anything other than believe in Him.

Isa 41:21 Produce your cause, saith the LORD; bring forth your strong reasons, saith the King of Jacob.

Isa 41:22 Let them bring them forth, and shew us what shall happen: let them shew the former things, what they be, that we may consider them, and know the latter end of them; or declare us things for to come.

Isa 41:23 Shew the things that are to come hereafter, that we may know that ye are gods: yea, do good, or do evil, that we may be dismayed, and behold it together.

Isa 41:24 Behold, ye are of nothing, and your work of nought: an abomination is he that chooseth you.

Isa 41:26 Who hath declared from the beginning, that we may know? and beforetime, that we may say, He is righteous? yea, there is none that sheweth, yea, there is none that declareth, yea, there is none that heareth your words.

Isa 41:28 For I beheld, and there was no man; even among them, and there was no counsellor, that, when I asked of them, could answer a word.

Isa 41:29 Behold, they are all vanity; their works are nothing: their molten images are wind and confusion.

God shows He is the one true God by showing the end from the beginning which no other religion can do.

Which He showed the whole history of mankind and what is going on today which it is close to Him allowing the man of sin to deceive the world so He can end sin on earth.

1Ti 4:1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
1Ti 4:2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron.

2Ti 4:2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
2Ti 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
2Ti 4:4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

The new age christianity that interprets the Bible according to the occult and evolution, and people are going to evolve to be spiritual, and greater, and Jesus became an ascended master among others, and there is no personal God, but they honor the God of forces the power of nature, and the New Age Christ is the next world teacher.

The time will come that people will not want to hear the truth of the Bible but want to hear it according to the new age.

Which they shall come out at the latter times.

Pro 30:11 There is a generation that curseth their father, and doth not bless their mother.

Pro 30:12 There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filthiness.

Pro 30:13 There is a generation, O how lofty are their eyes! and their eyelids are lifted up.

Pro 30:14 There is a generation, whose teeth are as swords, and their jaw teeth as knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, and the needy from among men.

Rev 3:14 And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;

Rev 3:15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.

Rev 3:16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.

Rev 3:17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked.

The last generation where children will not obey parents.

And they will devour the poor from off the earth, and the needy from among men.

Which can only happen at the time of technology where we see they cannot have enough money.

And the last Church age where there are many people claiming to be Christian being involved with heaping money to themselves which can only happen at the time of technology.

United Nations Agenda 21 for the 21st century which is a sustainability act.

They want to move all people in to the cities, and no development can happen outside city limits, and the people are the police force.

They want to give the people a microchip under the skin linked to satellite like a GPS tracking system for humans.

They can watch the people, and know their location, and if a crime happens they will know who was in the area, and how close they were to the crime scene.

This will cut out judges, lawyers, and the now known police force.

All information about the person will be on the chip including finances for it is the one world economic system.

Rev 13:16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:

Rev 13:17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

Rev 13:18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

chi xi stigma
khee xee stig'-ma
The 22nd, 14th and an obsolete letter (G4742 as a cross) of the Greek alphabet (intermediate between the 5th and 6th), used as numbers; denoting respectively 600, 60 and 6; 666 as a numeral: - six hundred threescore and six.

stigma
stig'-mah
From a primary word στίζω stizō (to “stick”, that is, prick); a mark incised or punched (for recognition of ownership), that is, (figuratively) scar of service: - mark.

The mark of the beast is something stuck under something and since it is given to a person it is stuck under their skin.

The New Age Christ's agenda is there is no personal God to help mankind but their technology can help them to deter crime, and have peace.

The new age is of the occult and the occult believes in the power of numbers and the timing, adding, and grouping of numbers which they believe will give them more power through nature.

6 is the number of a person, or the soul of a person, so the antichrist has the number 666, a triple 6, which he believes will give him more power to evolve to be spiritual, and establish his kingdom.

666 is the number that exalts people in the occult.

They want to convince the world if they embrace the number 666 they will have the power to evolve, and transform the world.

Continued from above post

1Co 1:20 Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?

1Co 1:27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty.

1Co 3:19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.

1Co 3:20 And again, The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain.

The world is foolish and silly in their thinking.

1Ti 6:20 O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:

1Ti 6:21 Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen.

Science can be wrong and arrogant and there is a deception going on.

The Roman Empire does not lose their dominion until Jesus puts down the world.

Which the Pope will go along with the new age christianity.

Science has been working to get people away from the truth of the Bible and then give them the new age interpretation of the Bible.

Which the New Age Christ will have the support of the Pope and Science to gain control of the world.

I do not care what the world says about anything for I read through the Bible and believe it is true for God told us all that would happen.

However things are is how they are and however things happened is how they happened.

There has to be an explanation.

But I do not seek out what the world says to battle against at least not to a great extent and not if it is too far fetched.

1Co 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

1Co 2:15 But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man

1Co 2:16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

God did not create beings and place them in a world based on provable facts but that is the heathen that come up with that which the wisdom of the world is foolishness.

Ecc 7:29 Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.

Heb 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

1Co 2:10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.

1Co 2:11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.

1Co 2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.

Joh 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

It did not start out that way but the ways of God but mankind will gum up the works thinking they are special.

God will show the truth to those willing to listen and not worry about what the world says.

There has to be an explanation for everything even if we do not understand.

But the world is foolish, silly, arrogant, and deceiving, so they will say things to promote what they want that would include false beliefs wanting to hear it their way, and even lying about things to promote it.

So I do not worry about the world.

But I only go so far with what they say going against the main things that God already told us about and some things that the Bible does not tell us but is common sense it can only be that in line with the theme of the Bible and looking at the world.

Alan
question #1: no one really has to explain it & we don't need to know. . however, read ken ham's teachings on this. he pinpoints a lot of facts.
question #2: did you allow yourself to be trained to believe anything that wasn't verified? don't fall into teachings that are of a false spirit. get the facts strait from God, read the Bible. God doesn't require anyone to have faith in man's false teachings. cast out your assumptions. & when you start studying the Bible, you should be a born again Christian 1st, that way you'll have the Holy Spirit's assistance in understanding the Bible. take in a study of Hebrews 11:1. also, don't allow yourself to overanalyze anything.
