Based on the circumstances seems to be an odd choice of word that Jesus choose to use. Why not just call him Satan as he did with Peter. For the record though, I have not offered an opinion on why Jesus chose that word "Friend" but rather only pointing out what seemed to me to be a very odd...

What I posted is in the book of Mathew where Jesus calls Judas "Friend". Any other time he would address a group as friends but did not single out any particular apostle. He did call Peter "Satan" once. I think that is in the book of John.
