A 9-Year-Old at a Shooting Range, a Spraying Uzi and Outrage

... A 9-year-old girl from New Jersey accidentally shot and killed her instructor with an Uzi submachine gun while he stood to her left side, trying to guide her. A video of the shooting, which her parents recorded on a cellphone, suggests that the girl, in pink shorts and with a braided ponytail, was unable to control the gun’s recoil; the instructor, Charles Vacca, 39, was rushed to a hospital in Las Vegas, where he died Monday night...

“What in the (edited) is wrong with us, Americans?” one person wrote on the TripAdvisor page for Bullets and Burgers, the tour company that brings people to Last Stop, amid other reviewers who raved about the great time they had firing guns there. “Automatic weapons as toys? And now a man is dead, for no reason, and a 9-year-old girl is scarred for life...”

Just poor risk assessment and lack of proper training to determine if a child could have the strength to control a gun on automatic. Should have at least used blanks before moving on to live.

You would not let a 9 year old to drive a car without knowing they could!

No doubt...maybe should have started her out with a Cricket...22 single shot bolt action!
 
Would seem that the shooting sports are somewhat unforgiving of stupidity. Sometimes you do not have a re-do. Now the kid and parents will become gun control advocates.

The instructor was to remain at the 6 O'clock mark, i.e. behind the girl bracing her body with his and having his hands at the ready to grab her arms to steady, before she let off the shots.
Evidently the parents wanted to film their daughter and his body would have blocked the video capture of her first shots, given this was her birthday and one of the things on her young bucket list of must do's.
That was his mistake. Not assuming the 6 O'clock position and making the parents move instead so as to capture the video.
Now, their daughter will live with having killed a man because she couldn't handle the weapon she always wanted to shoot.

It's a horrible tragedy. God rest the soul and bring peace to all who grieve and suffer the memory of this fateful event.

No doubt...brings home....Life it but a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away......!
 
People die from their clothes getting caught in machinery. A woman named Isadora Duncan once died when her long scarf snagged the wheel of a car breaking her neck.

People die in the course of normal human events. Maria Pantazopoulos, for example, from Montreal drowned to death at her wedding photo shoot when she fell into a river.

Everyday machinery causes human death. For example, a Swedish man died falling off his lawnmower and being run over by it.

On and on it goes...

Take better precautions, use better instructors, and if an accident results in a loss to your family then share what you've learned to reduce the risk of it happening to somebody else.

What you do NOT want to do is throw out the baby with the bathwater.

I started my kids with 2 rounds in the clip. When they were able to handle that, we moved up two rounds at a time. They were younger than this girl.

Even the blanks could probably put an eye out from that close range. Still much better than dead, though. Youtube is full of videos with fools who give women and children guns bigger than they should give them, and then laugh it up when the gun goes flying.
 
My generation started out with bows and arrows and pellet guns in our elementary school years in the back yard and out camping and by junior high we were training in the Boy Scouts with .22 rifles. By the 10th grade we were proficient with pistols, rifles, and shotguns and at some point in high school (depending on the maturity we displayed); most of our parents allowed us to take ownership of the firearms we used. I don't remember a single serious accident occurring in my family or anyone else's I personally knew growing up.

Over 110 million Americans passed through the Boy Scouts of America which offered institutional gun safety and mentored training classes using live ammunition. Many of us were properly mentored and trained in both life and the proper use of firearms with our first carbine coming from the government Civilian Marksmanship Program. Both we, society, and the nation were all better people who were better prepared for it.

The problem is NOT "guns" as the left would have you believe: the problem is leftardism... lol.

The colossal breakdown of the family respite with tens of millions of unmentored, unmonitored, unaccountable, and unloved fatherless single-mother children wandering the terrain; the almost complete abandonment of Christian values in people's lives and behavior (though many appear to have retained the illusion in name only for some reason), the rapid escalation and use of drugs and alcohol to get high and drunk (often as a way of life), etc... etc... etc...

That's the REAL problem. I just call it leftardation... lol. Why? Because it makes me laugh and also because so many of the above are on the left.

HAHAH I started out with a Jaycees program in the 70's and bb guns....then to a 22, 30-30, 30-06 and M-16a2 in the Marine Corp...........:)
 
A tragic death, a freak accident. Probably more adults have been killed by slipping on banana peals (or the like) tossed by kids than by a child firing a full auto Uzi.

Well said. My thoughts exactly. Whenever I fire a gun with a powerful round I only put one bullet in the chamber in case I lose control of it. To have an adult think that a 9 year old girl could handle an automatic gun ON HER OWN is ridiculous. I see more gun laws on the horizon, but really all we need is common sense and a healthy respect for firearms. They're not toys. But they're not to be hated and banned. They have practical value in democratic societies.
 
it's more than simply firearms training that was at fault here. that was certainly one big part of it but not all. why was a 9 year old playing games with a fully automatic weapon? my son started shooting when he was 7 or 8 years old and there were always guns in the house. he got a rifle for his 14th birthday and was allowed to pick it out himself. he didnt decide on a 10-22 with a 40 round magazine. instead, he chose an old (but very nice) german long barrel target rifle with beautiful german
sights. it was 7 years later that he got to play with fully automatic weapons, the army showed him what they do.

In all human endeavors there are abuses of power and mistakes. Thanks to Wikileaks we can watch a member of our military gun down a crowd of reporters and cheer about his mistake. My position remains that Agricola said it best.

I do think that confiscating firearms from the American public would be the greatest abuse of power.
 
Well, I guess everyone involved learned that although stupid is not illegal, it sure can get you killed. Any idiot that puts a fully automatic Uzi in the hands of a novice shooter, regardless of age, pretty much deserves whatever happens after that.

It won't be long before the parents of this child (who are equally culpable) file a lawsuit against the owners of the gun range for the emotional trauma that their daughter sustained. As cold hearted as it may sound, the only persons involved in this tragedy that I feel sympathy for is the child and the family of the deceased instructor.
 
It wasn't a freak accident. The firearm instructor broke protocol because the child's parents wanted to get a good photograph. I kid you not. He was supposed to be behind the child maintaining full control of the weapon. Instead, he slipped off to the side and ceded full control of the weapon so the parents could get a "good" photograph. Well they got one, just not the one they intended.

There is no excuse for a weapons instructor to abandon firearm safety protocol period... especially when a 9 year old child is involved.
