Being a lady is far more than outward appearances. It is about the way a woman conducts herself. The outward appearance is merely a reflection of the core.

My grandmother was very much the southern lady. She thought it was terrible for a lady to go out without her hat and gloves, or to get a tan. By her standards, I would dress like a hoochie. :)

Some things that mean a great deal to me:

1 Peter 3

New International Version (NIV)

3 Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, 2 when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. 3 Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. 4 Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight. 5 For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves. They submitted themselves to their own husbands, 6 like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her lord. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear.

-----------------

“For Attractive lips, speak words of kindness.
For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people.
For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry.
For beautiful hair, let a child run their fingers through it once a day.
For poise, walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone.
People, more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed, and redeemed. Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, you will find one at the end of each of your arms.
As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands, one for helping yourself and the other for helping others.”

I agree with S4T that really only other women can say what a lady is like, but I can't avoid my own opinion .

That is simply not true, 'true womanhood' is defined by God on the pages of scripture, not by other women. Jude 3 calls all believers to proclaim the truth of scripture thus all believers should be able to define 'a lady' biblically. If you work through scripture there are 15 re-occurring principles that define womanhood.

THE 15 HALLMARKS OF BIBLICAL WOMANHOOD

SHE WILL:

in Conduct:
1) Abstain from gossip (Titus 2:3)
2) Stay pure from sexual immorality (Proverbs 31:5, Titus 2:5)
3) Operate on principle, not impulse (proverbs 31:26, Titus 2:5)
4) Teach other women (Proverbs 30:31)

in Marriage:
5) Speak well of her husband (proverbs 12:4)
6) Be Gentle (1 Peter 3:4)
7) Be submissive (1 Peter 3:6, Ephesians 5:24, Proverbs 25:24. Esther 1:20)
8) Be passionate for her husband (Song of Solomon 5:10-16)

In Parenthood
9) Work at home (Proverbs 31:15, Titus 2:5)
10) Be loving (Titus 2:5)
11) Work hard (Proverbs 31)
12) Discipline (Proverbs 13:24)

In Appearance:
13) Be distinctively feminine: (Song of Solomon 1:10-12, Deuteronomy 22:5)

In Church
14) Learn and not teach (1 Timothy 2:12, 1 Corinthians 14:34)

But mostly, and above all, she will:

15) FEAR THE LORD

I believe you are completely wrong. Ever since the feminist movement, western society has attempted to close the gap between the difference in appearance of the two genders. And just like with many cultural trends, the church has bought in. But in mark 10:6 Jesus says that God purposely placed the distinction their from the beginning, and Deuteronomy 22:5 teaches that men and women are to have a completely different style of clothing.

Now, if a woman specifically desires not to wear make-up (for some unknown reason), that is not in and of itself a sin, but if she fails to make a distinction between her physical adornment and that which typically pertains to a man, that is a sin. 1 Corinthians 6:9 says something very similar with regards to the conduct of men, it teaches that if a man practices and behaves in a feminine manner, he is not even saved.

The reason why this issue is important is that when we start to lose our imagery distinction between the genders, we start to lose the biblical distintion of requirments for the two genders. That will place us in conflict with the work of God desires to complete on this earth. He has designed us genetically different so that we can full fill different purposes spiritually and practically: 1 Timothy 2:12, Titus 2:4-5, 1 Corinthians 11, Ephesians 5:22-33, proverbs 31, 1 Timothy 5:8 etc

And this is why I think there's a distinction between being solely a "lady" and being a "woman of God". Last summer I worked on a Native American reservation in South Dakota. It was always hot, dusty, and windy there. We had kid's day camp there during the week and I helped out. There were some days when my hair was a mess, I didn't bother with makeup much (my face would have just gotten dirty anyway or it would have all gotten washed off when we had water games) or jewelry, I wore jeans, a t-shirt, and tennis shoes, and I was out there getting dirty from playing with the kids and loving on them. It was such a blast. Hard work, but a blast. What you're implying is that because I didn't fix myself up, that I wasn't acting as a woman should? I beg to differ. I was showing them the love of Christ as a mother would (a female, a woman) and it wouldn't have mattered if I had put on a necklace or put on some lipstick because those kids didn't really care.

Granted, society tends to care. Other men (and sometimes women) tend to care. Is that a bad thing? Not necessarily. But I don't think that it defines whether or not you're a lady/true woman or not.

I have seen so many examples of lady like qualities in all the women in these forums.. Some silently strong, funny, laid back, some leaders some supporters .. Some caretakers some encouragers .. I think we have a fine variety creating a good
Balance here.. There isn't one woman here who's posts indicate she is anything but a lady.. There's different styles , like music and the grace that flows from them hit a cord or note in each one of us.. How boring if we were all created the
Same... and how dull life would be without all of them

So I think Cc should make shirts to sell.. shirts to represent our godly woman side .. ... Perhaps they could say
Cc LADY
Formed by a stroke of genius

yea i think that would do :)

God loves me if I wear makeup or not , hoops or not, heels or not ...
But again... That's god :)

What makes a lady? I'm not sure but I know what I don't like. I hate it when I see wife's wearing the pants in the relationship and the husband seeming to do jack-all to change. So I guess a lady (a married one at least) would be one who supports her husband and recedes control to let him lead. He should definitely put her interests first and talk things through with her, but he needs to prayerfully make the final decision.

THE FOLLOWING IS A GENERALISATION: Husbands need to step up to the plate and learn to be responsible leaders, wives need to learn humility by letting their husbands lead.

As for single girls, what makes them ladies? Who they are in Christ, confident in him - always pursuing God and his ways. Treating people with respect, even when they don't deserve it. Saying NO! if it needs to be said. Having sensible boundaries. All of these are good things.

Yes, lets get away from makeup and jewelry. This thread was meant to provoke opinions and convictions on the inner qualities that make up a lady- lets stick to talking about this :)

Ha ha I'm glad you said that donkey .. It got me the first time
I saw it .. I went "EH!" how did that bug get on my phone .. Good one Jullianna ;) I about threw my phone on the floor ...

I think a lady can be silently strong or kick tail ... I don't think she has to have a liscence to do either ..
god says there's a season for everything , make no
Mistake... We celebrate everyone of them !

15) FEAR THE LORD

1 Tim 9:1-10
Likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works.

Jer 4:30
And you, O desolate one, what do you mean that you dress in scarlet, that you adorn yourself with ornaments of gold, that you enlarge your eyes with paint? In vain you beautify yourself. Your lovers despise you; they seek your life

1 Peter 3:3-4
Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious.

Physical beauty is a gift from God but it doesn't compare to the beauty of a Godly character.
Song of Solomon describes a woman who is likely wearing makeup and jewelry, but it also shows it was worn in modesty. She is also a bride and was dressing FOR HER HUSBAND. Not for others to stare at her.

There is nothing in the bible that suggests women should wear makeup. What we are told is to be modest. Don't adorn yourself with pretty things to attract attention. That is vanity which is a sin.

If a woman spends everyday practicing a beauty routine with makeup, jewelry, hairstyling to improve her physical appearance then she should spend more time working on her spiritual beauty.

Also, just because a woman looks pretty doesn't make her Godly or even a lady. Makeup isn't what makes a woman beautiful. Jewelry isn't what makes her feminine.

I have nothing against wearing makeup and looking nice, but even when I go out and I am not "prettied up" it is still obvious I am a woman, and not some man hating feminist. Looks fade, but a womans true inner beauty never will. She will only become more beautiful as time goes by. When I do dress up I am modest. I don't dress to attract negetive attention either. I don't wear low cut shirts or short dresses. I present myself as a lady.

One more thing. If you or any other male on this planet thinks makeup and jewelry is what makes a woman attractive or a lady then you have absolutely NO clue what a real woman is. Which is truly sad.

Aimee fact in 3... 2... 1...

A "lady" is an old, old, old concept, but not for how a woman should act. A "lady" was to designate a wealthy woman from a poor one. It's a hierarchy. Plain and simple. The word lady was made popular in America in the 19th century. It is supposed to denote a high bred class of females to distinguish from the lower class. The "lady rules" are entirely made up and have little to no scriptural basis.

I completely disagree :) I come from a long line of godly ladies and will continue to conduct myself accordingly, regardless of any defining or redefining. I don't want any of those lovely southern women slapping me silly from their graves. :)

P.S. - At my house, "class" was defined as the ability to treat everyone with respect regardless of their "station" in life.

I wish Nod was here to weigh in on this.

I've tried researching the History of being Ladylike and being a Lady. I think it has to do with Etiquette social standing and birth.

But honestly its vague. So I guess how we use it will be enough for me. I don't have a negative or positive association with it.

I have a feeling Nod would say a lady is one who holds her pinkie out when she burps. :D

Come back, Nod!!! We miss you :)
