For some reason, this was the day that I forgot about my fear of heights.
I believe it was a weekend day, and I got the urge to visit a lighthouse in my town that I had never climbed.
I excitedly drove to it, got my ticket and then quickly walked inside.
I got about a few flights up when I remembered: Oh, that's right. This is scary.
A couple of flights later I was considering going back down.
It was already too high for my taste, and I could feel the breeze blowing in from the ocean.
As I started to walk back down, something inside told me to keep going.
I quickly realized there was more to this lighthouse visit than I first thought.
So I climbed another flight. Now my heart was starting to beat faster. My hands were starting to shake a bit.
I started telling God that I wanted to quit and that I was afraid.
And I kept being urged, I believe, to press on.
I believe I sensed Him basically telling me He would protect me. I told Him I was afraid of falling. It was like He was urging me to trust Him, to give Him my fears.
By the time I got several more flights up, I was really scared!
With one more flight to go, I could feel the breeze and see from a window how terribly high I was.
I carefully crept up the last flight, and when I made it to the top, a woman was right there watching me. I looked out onto the open deck, and then hugged a post at the top of the staircase and wept.
It was such a big moment of trust because I really don't like being up high.
Then I slowly walked back down with tears on my cheeks.
As I got to the bottom, I went into a side room to gather my emotions.
Then, that same woman who had been at the top of the last flight of stairs came into the room.
She asked, "Can I pray for you?" I said yes.
As she prayed, she told me (paraphrase) that God would ask me to do things in life that are sometimes difficult, and that the lighthouse moment would be a time to remember in order to draw strength -- to remember that I can trust God and trust Him to walk me through anything.
I was so amazed that I had been led to the lighthouse, and that God had perhaps arranged for that woman to be right there waiting on me when I reached the top!
Had I turned back, I would have missed out.
It happened a few years ago, and it's memory I still treasure today.
