Many threads have been created on this topic to refer to. I believe that it refers to the anti-Christ defiling the new temple in Jerusalem.

The third temple of Jerusalem will be built and at some point in the future the antichrist will take it over and transform it into a place to worship himself. That`s the abomination.

The desolation is the great tribulation that will launched at that time.

Who in the bible was left desolate?
What was the abomination that left them desolate?
Answer those questions and you will know what the abomination of desolation is.

Sacrificing a pig on an alter in temple that God cares nothing about IS NOT an abomination to God.

It is what makes what desolate as a abomination The holy place of God is the unseen place reserved for the faith principle.

A temple made with human hands as if God lived in them would be a abomnonation. Asking that they could have a king seen rather than the King of kings not seen to represent them. An abomination of desolation

7 And the Lord said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them1 Samuel 8;7

An abomination of desolation making faith without efect

The time period used as a parable when there were Kings in Israel. The apostate none believing Jew not wanting to serve a unseen God it provided the desolation of faith . The Jew not wanting to walk after the true holy place not seen, but rather focused its attention the pagan form of government .

What the eyes see . . again desolating faith.

When the reformation came the abomination disappeared. Some are trying to build another and calling it the their 3rd temple of desolation

And ye have this day rejected your God, who himself saved you out of all your adversities and your tribulations; and ye have said unto him, Nay, but set a king over us. Now therefore present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes, and by your thousands.1 Samuel 10:19

For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, he hath also rejected thee from being king.1 Samuel 15:23

The abomination of desolation appears in Daniel 8:13 as the transgression of desolation, and is referred to as the little horn who emerges from one of the he goats four horns after its prominent horn secedes. This little horn appears previously in Daniel 7:8, 20, & 25 in association with the ten horned beast, who destroys/desolates whom it pleases, while it consumes the whole world (Daniel 7:7 & 23).
The little horn here is also referred to as the beast's mouth, who speaks great things against the most High, while wearing out the saints (Daniel 7:25).
We see the beast's mouth who speaks great things again in Revelation 13:5 in association with the seven headed, 10 horned beast. The beast's mouth who wears out the saints in Daniel 7:25 is described making war with the saints and overcoming them in Revelation 13:7.
In effect it appears the fourth beast of ten horns in Daniel along with its mouth (aka the little horn), and the seven headed ten horned beast in Revelation 13 along with its mouth who speaks great things and makes war with the saints, is the abomination of desolation.

Daniel 8:13 Then I heard one saint speaking, and another saint said unto that certain saint which spake, How long shall be the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, and the transgression of desolation, to give both the sanctuary and the host to be trodden under foot?

Daniel 7:8 I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things.
20 And of the ten horns that were in his head, and of the other which came up, and before whom three fell; even of that horn that had eyes, and a mouth that spake very great things, whose look was more stout than his fellows.
25 And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.

Revelation 13:5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.
7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.

What is the abomination of Desolation? I would truly like to hear from you.
Some commentators say it was the Roman army.

Benson commentary
"The abomination that maketh desolate. By which term is intended the desolating Roman armies with their standards."

Barnes' notes on the Bible
"The abomination of desolation means the Roman army, and is so explained by Luke 21:20. The Roman army is further called the "abomination" on account of the images of the emperor, and the eagles, carried in front of the legions, and regarded by the Romans with divine honors."

Matthew Poole's commentary

"the abomination of desolation to be meant of the Roman armies, which being made up of idolatrous soldiers, and having with them many abominable images are therefore called the abomination; those words, of desolation are added, because they were to make Jerusalem desolate; and so St. Luke, who hath not these words, possibly gives us in other words the best interpretation of them, Luke 21:20: And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh."

Gill's exposition of the entire Bible
"but the Roman army is designed; see Luke 21:20 which was the , "the wing", or "army of abominations making desolate", Daniel 9:27. Armies are called wings, Isaiah 8:8 and the Roman armies were desolating ones to the Jews, and to whom they were an abomination; not only because they consisted of Heathen men, and uncircumcised persons, but chiefly because of the images of their gods, which were upon their ensigns:"

Bengel's gnomen
"The abomination of profanation was followed by the abomination of desolation. Such was the name given by the Jews to the Roman army, composed of all nations, the standards of which they held in abomination as idols, since the Romans attributed divinity to them."

Expositor's Greek Testament
"Luke gives the clue (Matthew 24:20). The horror is the Roman army, and the thing to be dreaded and fled from is not any religious outrage it may perpetrate, but the desolation it will inevitably bring."

According the the hebrew language it is a term to denote an unclean thing or idol (abomination) which is placed in a holy place rendering it desolate (unclean)

The key to understanding this is the meaning of *abomination* and how it relates to extremely serious and blasphemous idolatry. It is literally "a detested thing" (detested by God).

And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination* that maketh desolate. (Daniel 11:31)

Abomination = הַשִּׁקּ֥וּץ (ha-šhiq-qūtṣ)

Strong's Concordance
shiqquts: detested thing

Original Word: שִׁקּוּץ
Part of Speech: Noun Masculine
Transliteration: shiqquts
Phonetic Spelling: (shik-koots')
Definition: detested thing

NASB Translation
abominable idols
(1), abomination (4), abominations (5), detestable (1), detestable idol (3), detestable idols (2), detestable things (10), detested things (1), filth (1).

This needs to be tied into the image of the Beast (the Antichrist) -- a blasphemous idol which can actually speak -- which will be erected in the Holy Place in a future temple at Jerusalem: When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand)... (Mt 24:15)

And [the False Prophet] deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the Beast [the Antichrist]; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the Beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live. And he had power to give life unto the image of the Beast, that the image of the Beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the Beast should be killed. (Rev 13:14,15).

It is significant that in just two verses "the image of the Beast" is repeated four times, and is connected to the killing of all those who will refuse to worship the Beast and Satan, or take the Mark of the Beast. So we can reasonably conclude that the Antichrist will demand that the whole world should worship this image.

And to God and Christ, that is extremely abominable or detestable, since it is a demand for the worldwide worship of Satan and the Antichrist. That this image can actually speak is remarkable in itself. Also we see here that the Unholy Trinity is at work in that Satan, the Beast, and the False Prophet are all involved with this blasphemous idolatry.

The desolation connected with this extreme idolatry will be the outpouring of God's wrath through the 7th seal judgments. This earth will be devastated and desolated by supernatural judgments.

Was it an abomination for the Jews to kill Christ?
Did God destroy those miserable sinners from off the land for doing so?

I'm shaking my head. Do you really seriously believe that a temple built by a group of people that are by definition - the spirit of antichrist, do you really believe God considers that temple a holy place?

The abomination that makes desolate make the unseen Holy place of the glory of God to no effect replacing it the temporal things of men seen. .men glorying in the flesh..

Temples build with human hands replacing the eternal things not seen, the faith principle . The time period there were Kings in Israel was one of the time period that a abomination of desolation.

God does not live in temples made with human hands we walk by faith

Its the spirit of the antichrist (Satan) that fills the unseen things of the faith of God.. .replacing God …. a offence.

It is the work of the unseen spirit of antichrist (Satan) that was first witnessed in the garden .Placing form rudiments of this corrupted creation in the unseen place of the glory of God.

Instant gratification .No faith needed. Again placing the things of men seen in the place of God who remains without form. . a abomination of desolation .

Many antichrists, humans are being deceived by the spirit of lies. They were already here as in any generartion.

Like the example with Peter one used as many of the antichrists . He was forgiven of his blasphemy against the Son of man, as the things of men seen an abomination of desolation leaving the unseen Holy place of faith without effect.

Those that would make the revealing of the antichrist pending something that has not occurred . When he has been doing that work from day six. . . come under that kind of deception .

A good understanding between the things of God not seen and things of men must be made

Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee. But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men. Mathew 16:22-23

Lol

Once again, that does not matter

What matters is what does the term mean, the defenition, if we do not like the defenition, it does not give us the right to change it,

An abomination of desolation is an idle put in any holy place (pagan, christian or hew)

Do you think the temple, ruled by people who rejected christ, in fact the evil high priest entering the holy of holies the day of the cross was considered gods house?

Well jesus thought it was.
