Hey Everyone,

One of the biggest challenges I find as a single is when I'm alone and having a health crisis. I'm normally a little dizzy as it is :D, but when it feels like the room is actually spinning with me, like it was this morning, I know I'm in trouble.

I don't get sick often, but when I do, it ain't pretty. One time I slept on the floor in the bathroom because I literally couldn't pick myself up enough to go back to bed, and at that time, I didn't have anyone I could call for help.

Along with the challenge of just trying to make sure I sleep and eat, I also get worried about dragging myself to work because there's no one else around to help with the bills. One of the things I'd be most thankful for in a husband is someone who would say, "Stay home and rest--I've totally got this,"and likewise, when he was sick, I could tell him, "Don't even worry about it--your getting better is the most important thing," because we would both be doing our part to make sure everything is covered.

* What are some of the challenges you face when you're sick? How would having someone in your life change that?

* Who are you able to go to for help now, if anyone?

* What are your special needs or considerations when you're feeling "under the weather"?

(For instance... whenever I'm sick, as awful as it is, I ALWAYS crave junk food. When I was younger, I spent some time in the hospital and begged my parents to bring me McDonald's instead of the bland, horrible "medical" foods I was being fed--and I've craved fast food every time I get sick ever since.)

Right now, I'm thinking French fries, chicken McNuggets, and a gallon of ginger ale would be gourmet fare. :D I just have to rope someone into fetching it for me.

What about the rest of you?

How do you cope when you're sick?

Mama ain't never sick...sigh...lol...

I take cold-eeze or some other zinc supplement like it's going out of style and sleep 14 or 16 hours a day for... well, one day. The time I don't spend asleep, I spend lying down and breathing deeply, because my body is almost always crying for more energy when I'm sick. Then I get up and continue with life because I feel a lot better.

I can afford to take a day off work because one day doesn't pay very much anyway. It's better than trying to work while being sick for four or five days. And I really HATE when other people are sick and come to work anyway and play Patient Zero and get everybody else sick.

By the way, the part about increased respiration, I wasn't kidding about that. The reason your muscles ache is because of a severe lack of energy. Increase respiration, increase metabolism, increase energy production, fight the infection faster and better.

And I really HATE when other people are sick and come to work anyway and play Patient Zero and get everybody else sick.

You make an excellent point, Lynx, and I do wrestle with myself over going to work sick for this very reason...

I guess I just try my best to keep to myself as much as possible, constantly wash my hands and take medicine, etc. I do realize it can be unfair to other people, and it's not that I don't WANT to stay home, believe me. I would love nothing more than to stay home and sleep.

But a lot of times I'm just thinking... "There's no one else but me... and I've got to get things taken care of," so it doesn't really feel like a choice.

That sounds serious Kim...

I also cope with sickness by eating junk food - have to eat what I crave at the moment because my body is trying fight off the sickness and junk food somehow gives my body strength to fight haha..

I get along fine when I am sick. I never seemed to want anyone around to care for me when I was sick, not even when I was a small child. I just learned how to care for myself. The only time I have ever needed the assistance of someone during a health crisis was when I passed my kidney stones, and that only amounted to my Dad calling the EMT to come to the house.

When I fought migraines for 10 years, I fought them alone. When I've had food poisoning, I did that alone. When I went through my cancer scare a couple of years ago, I did that alone. As much as it would be swell to have somebody on call to bring me a funky burrito from Taco Bell to help me get over that last bit of a cold, I've found that most of the time when someone wants to "help", they end up just getting on my nerves and getting in the way.

Some day in the not too distant future, I'll have another health crisis and won't have anyone around to help me, and it's all my doing because I push everyone away. I will either get over the crisis or I won't. I will either be able to dial 911 on my own and get an ambulance to me in time enough to get me to a doctor, or I will die.

I stay home because I do not want everyone else to get sick as people have said before. I just lay in bed, or play games on the computer might come in here on the chat if I just have a minor cold still won't go to work. Because some of the people I work don't have a great immune system. On another note is weird not to get the flu for years, even though you do not get the flu shot? Just a random question...

The strains of flu that are out every year are generally different. This is why people need to get a flu shot every year, to create an immunity against the present strains. The CDC tries to predict the strains they think will be out and make the shots with those strains. It's not weird not to contract the flu if you have not had it for a few years. That means you have a great immune system fighting off the invading infections. As people get older, though, they should get immunized every year. Your job may put you in the path of the flu if you are in service or interact with many people.

I had flu one time as a kid, it was miserable. I have gotten a flu shot every year I have been grown and not gotten sick again. I teach school, so the flu is a very real possibility.

I hardly ever get sick. Which I attribute to vitamins. I have been convicted of this, though. I have really good health and I need to be a good steward of this blessing God has given me.

I honestly can not remember the last time I was sick.

You just knew somebody would bring this up...

Ecclesiastes 4:8-12
[SUP]8 [/SUP]There is one alone, and there is not a second; yea, he hath neither child nor brother: yet is there no end of all his labour; neither is his eye satisfied with riches; neither saith he, For whom do I labour, and bereave my soul of good? This is also vanity, yea, it is a sore travail.

[SUP]9 [/SUP]Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour.
[SUP]10 [/SUP]For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.
[SUP]11 [/SUP]Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone?
[SUP]12 [/SUP]And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

So far I've never been in the situation of serious health crisis while living by myself.

Worst was probably when I was overseas and wiped out on my bicycle coming down a hill. Lower part of my right leg became the brake, and while the pants held up admirably well and there weren't a whole lot of scratches to get dirty, I did twist / sprain my ankle pretty badly and my leg was all sore and bruised up for a week. Then I was fortunate to be in a culture where everyone and their brother tries to take care of you when you're sick, so my biggest challenge was trying to explain in a foreign language that I didn't need any laundry done or more fruit since I hadn't been able to eat all I was given the day before. Another memory of traveling was being overseas with a team and getting sick and then my teammates saying that I was a bossy sick person.

Generally if I'm sick enough to need extra sleep I'll stay home a day or two and sleep. If I had a serious problem that I needed someone else's help, I could still call my parents or brother since both my dad and brother have to practically come past my apartment to go to work. Beyond that I'm trusting to caution to keep me from getting myself into a situation with a nasty injury and doing my best to avoid germs (and often the people who carry them). But those are the kind of things that I figure I'll find a way to make it work when I come to it.

A few years back, a good friend and I both lived on our own and agreed to become one another's "person" - that one that we could always call no matter what time of the day or night. (We stole the term from Grey's Anatomy!) One of the times that we used our "person agreement" the most was when one of us was sick. He would bring me Gatorade and saltines when I had a migraine, and I would make him chicken noodle soup and walk his dog when he caught a cold. It was a really great system! After I moved, we both found other friends in our communities to become our go-to people for Gatorade and soup, but we still support one another emotionally. :)

I don't get sick very often. Rarely miss a day of work.

I attribute this to c̶h̶o̶c̶o̶l̶a̶t̶e̶...I mean God.
