Not wishing to get into a debate, but quitting is easier to talk about than to do. I've heard absolutely every admonishment about drinking, being a drunk, being a drunkard. You name it, I've heard it. It first has to start with me wanting to quit.

I think it's like every other battle we can't win on our own strength. To pray for the grace to do the literal work of removing the desire to do or not do something is God's power by faith.
I hope this post wasn't directed at me, Ugly. All I said was, “We learn from the Bible that it is okay to drink a little alcohol, but not okay to drink a lot. Where do you draw the line?”

You first must be saved. Romans 9:9-10. Acts 17:30 - God commands all men everywhere to repent.

You have to want to glorify God and die to self more than you want the drink. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. I used to be a pothead like cheech and chong. I used to think I needed zanax to sleep and get me through the day. I was a fornicator too! I was a mess. Im not perfect yet because I am not with the Lord in heaven yet( glorified) but I am a work in progress (santified). I am the clay and God is my potter. God delivered me from it all! God frees us from the bondage of sin. Humble yourself. Seek the Lord. Jesus Christ can set you free!

Please commit yourself to reading the bible every single day. Seek the Lord in the early morning hours. You will find him. Christ said if you knock I will answer.
it's always about 'moderation', it is KEY, - if we over-indulge, this shows us our helplessness and
desire for some kind of love and comfort that is missing in our lives - then the real problems arise
and we must seek Jesus or someone whom He puts in our lives that we will listen to and learn from,
in order to desire to abide in His will and not abuse ourselves, as satan so desires for us to do...

On February 13th, 1983, I gave my life to Christ.
Have not had nor desired to have a drop of alcohol since.
The indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit removed that desire from my life, and I praise God He did.
(as for others? that's their problem........especially IF they are trying to do it themselves)
In my opinion, one can not be a PRACTICING alcoholic and be a Christian. A RECOVERING alcoholic? Yes. As with any other sin, one must ABSTAIN from the sinful lifestyle. Scriptures reveal this to be true.
Ugly is right. However, I do not know anyone who ONLY AS A DRINK..........and does not get DRUNK. That, in my opinion, is far harder than quitting.

I will share my prospective. I am a alcoholic . I have been sober for 21 years . I agree that it all starts with your desire to stop .
The fact you are posting about this says in the very least you believe you have a problem. That's a good start. If you want to stop . As others have said above and your name here on the forum says God is gracious. God is willing to help if you ask .
.I can relate that stopping is not so easy , but it can be done one day at a time. If you can't manage a day try a hour or even a minute at a time . I was one of those guys that did it one minute at a time . Those minutes will add up . Also I was not able to stop the first time . Some can and some can't so don't give up if you stumble at first . The idea of being sober is that it's a journey not a destination.
Another thing is find some other folks that have the same problem you have to talk with . Church support groups or AA is a good start . God works through many people and He uses them to help others . Who knows at some time in the future God may use you to help someone who is struggling with alcoholism.

Ok as to the op if you get drunk ,or continually drink to drunkenness I believe that is the line .
I am a drunk so I don't drink period. My wife drinks she has no issues. She will take a week to
finish a 6 pack. That still boggles my mind. lol . Usually the drinking is not the real issue though .
Once start digging in to it it's the why we drink so much is the real problem . The character defects
or our separation from God is at the core reason.

I know many Foreign Christians that drink wine with their meal every night, and most of them are not nearly as religious as we are in the USA.
I draw the line when religion tells people that Jesus never drank alcoholic wine and try to convince people that it was somehow welchs grape juice or smuckers jelly.....A simple word study shows us that Jesus himself drank fermented wine and was accused by religion in his day of being a glutton and drunkard...to be accused as a drunkard means somebody saw you drinking the real deal....
I personally do not drink, because I am a former alcoholic. If you are a part of our ministry team, you sign a code of honor/ethics statement stating you will refrain drinking in public and your social media better never show you drinking either. Christian Character matters most

Moderation. I drink to go with food or just to relax and unwind a bit. I don't do it because I'm depressed, or to fill a void or to the point of being drunk. It's the same as other things if you do too much of it it's bad. But for me it's like relaxing, same as a hot bath or a massage. It just eases you a bit.
And as those saying who don't know what moderation is and they drink more then they should then it's not really moderation and it's an illness, an addiction or even just arrogance. And those people should trust the ones around them saying what they're doing is unhealthy.
Something isn't fact just cause you say it is. You have to be actually doing the technical description of moderation for it to be moderation.
