There's also VSA - volunteer service abroad, mostly to the Islands.
If you are a qualified medical professional you'd be in demand. Nurses have gone to Afghanistan, and there's also Doctors without Borders to Africa, and the aforementioned Mercy Ships, often providing dental care.

There is one missions that does libraries and books in schools all over the world. I forget the name of it now but was founded by one of the ex-microsoft employee who made a lot of money in computers. If anyone knows the name of it (why can't I remember???) please post it here.

Ok SOME Christians may not agree with this (as they could be misogynists) but girls education was actually very important to Jesus. That's why Jesus told Martha who was busy in the kitchen, that Mary's education - to sit at His feet and learn is more important and should never be taken away from her.
 
ok just backtracking a bit... someone - JohnDB - mentioned how he never had problems asking for money. Well some people do - especially those who aren't well off or live in a poor area where people can barely afford to keep themselves afloat, let alone donate to others. We can give things like maybe a new pair of pyjamas or a spare can of food, but money?

You must know some wealthy people who have lots of disposable income or good credit scores. I don't actually know a lot of people like that. The rich people I know already support a lot of charities and probably don't tell people this either. Maybe if you lived somewhere with a lot of CEOs? But then I worked in public service for 2 decades, so, it was pretty much serving the poor (public) anyway. Schools and libraries. Rich people can afford books and their private libraries, an even own the buildings as Andrew Carnegie did - but that is off-the-scale wealthy.

I don't hate on the wealthy, but I'm not in their circle. If you can get there by marriage, profession or are actually born into it, its easier.

Yes and no some places don't want you there politics and believes in some countries are not welcome you . You have to go and find organizations that will help and prepare you for your specific mission. Mission can be dangerous sometimes if you don't know what you're doing. Please inform you before you commit.

Most are not missionary kids but rather grew up in a fairly standard family situation and want to go overseas before or after college (3 have already done so long-term and 3 more are doing short-term).

What advice do you have as far as helping them prepare for that? I'm mostly thinking from an emotional and spiritual standpoint. We try to offer them a lot of opportunities for domestic missions here in our town, plus a yearly trip a few states away. So they are definitely getting out of their comfort zones, but overseas has got to be a whole other bear to handle!

I'm so excited to hear about young people wanting to go into missions! Spiritually, I think Bible college is a wonderful thing to consider when preparing for missions. I went for a couple years and it really equips you so well. I understand that it's a big commitment as far as time and money goes, though. But highly recommend! :)

I think a short-term mission or visiting missionaries overseas in a new culture would be a great idea too before jumping into full-time missions. It is so eye-opening and the exposure to other cultures is really helpful to realize how drastically different it might be. And living overseas comes with challenges so seeing that firsthand would be really good.

I don't think this is really new or revolutionary advice :), but the mission that I'm most familiar with (My parents are with them and I went to their Bible college) is Ethnos360 and they have so many great resources and articles on their website for people interested in missions. I'm sure they would have some great advice too!

I did multiple mission with them they really have a good organization, I am in the music worship (piano) for them. the hand of God his all over. You can check them out in the web. We start in my Church 5 years ago with 5 Christians, now we are more then 25 in Ottawa.
