I used to judge divorced and remarried people as weak, who were selfish and thus couldn't believe God would restore their relationship, but I realized i was just putting every case under the same umbrella, being judgemental and without love. I started thinking differently after i realized that many of us, Christian or not, have had relationships before signing a paper and having a ceremony/making vows before a pastor or priest and society, many of us have given our hearts to someone when we dated, promised we would never leave them, would love them forever, then it got me thinking... does those things have NO value unless you sign a paper etc??? Doesnt God look at the heart and the spiritual things? Or the fact that you marry before society automatic means a heavenly bond was created even though you aren't a believer? We know anyone can claim to be born again, to be a Christian and yet that may not necessarily be so, in the same way, anyone can go to a church and get married, for thousands of (wrong) reasons and yet before God, spiritually speaking, that union would not be made by Him. does it make sense? It says wht GOD united let no man put asunder.. but.. is God who has united all couples? If we have made mistakes promising we would always love boyfriends or girlfriends we had and God forgave us and DOES NOT FORCE US TO GO BACK TO THEM and eventually marry them (it would be a bit impossible for some people who have had many) would it also be then possible to, in ignorance, have married someone who is not for you? is it possible to make a mistake by marrying someone for the wrong reasons? now, i know eventually you can learn to love that person etc, but when, for example, you become born again and the other spouse not and they aren't one with you, when theres no real covenant, or there never was, would it still mean those two people are spiritually united by God? whats a real union, the outward or something that God joins together? i hope you guys keep your mind open to consider these things because im not talking about biblical grounds for divorce etc, but rather what comes way before... whats initiated by God and thus if it would qualify as a real union as opposed to a union initiated in the flesh. by the way im not married and never was, but i think its good to think about these things. and again, i know scripture about divorce etc, but my considerations are not about grounds for divorce.

another thing to consider... Paul addresses the church when he talks about marriage issues, he addressed the community of believers, not unbelievers

in that case then God could eventually "have someone else" for the person and a divorce would follow?
as in.. God hates divorce and always will, of course, but God also hates unions joined by lust?

It's true not all marriages are joined by God. However God created marriage & takes those vows seriously. Only under special circumstances does God allow divorce. So even if the marriage was joined for the wrong reasons Gods law still applies.

so even if theres no real covenant you are supposed to remain with that person?

In that case, God wasn't even in the equation. Had he been, people wouldn't have one night stands and have to get married because a pregnancy resulted. Particularly if they didn't love each other to begin with, it was just raw animal sex. God hates divorce, that's true, BUT he can and does always use it to his glory. Marriage was meant to be a blessed and sanctified event. Too many people marry for the wrong reasons.

So, you know the grounds for divorce, huh? (You said that more than once, so I chuckled.) This sounds like a good time for you to study the grounds for "real unions" and marriage from the Bible.

And, nope. I'm not going to tell you my opinion, simply because God has this fascinating way of getting his words into us in a very personal way -- as if he gave each person an autographed edition of his book with personalized comments along the way.

Really. Do some word/topic studies on this. I think you'll learn much.

If I make a contract with you and don't intend to keep it I am still bound by the contract, unless some lawyer finds a flaw in the contract making it void. I think it's rare for that to happen though.

even some carnally minded people can see certain truths about their behavior and choices,
it took me to almost 30 to start towing the line Jesus had drawn for me in the sand...
it's what the world does and yes, Jesus can and does correct our 'bad' behavior & our 'bad' choices
when He starts to call us out of the 'world'...it's a slow process, this 'over-coming' our old-ways
but it definitely picks-up speed as we take our baby steps up His ladder, here a little and there...

John the Baptizer called out Herod for taking his brother's wife. This was not a Christian marriage, yet it was still adultery for Herod to take Herodias as his wife.

Given that, and what Paul wrote about marriage to an unbelieving spouse, I would conclude that God views marriages between unbelievers as just as valid as those between believers.

As to pre-marital 'commitments', I would think that the Lord looks at the intention of the speaker... was it to make an unconditional lifelong commitment, or for some other reason?

I'll always harbor a little bit of dislike for my Dads current situation. He divorced my Mother and dated and lived with a woman he worked with from before my parents were divorced. Then they recently got married (probably at her grumblings) she seems to have a lot of influence over him and he just seems to want to please her. I don't like the fact that he's said he never wished he met my mothers side of the family to me either. Idk, I found it funny when they came back from the rendezvous marriage and I asked if it was done in a Church. My Dad replied since he's Catholic they wouldn't allow that, I just had to laugh. lol but no, I'm one to believe in the old adage "Do not separate what God has joined together" Aka... You got a kid? or kids? You're married! Till death do you part! If only my peers adhered to this when they were sleeping around in their younger years too. Now I know of people with multiple children from multiple partners and its just.... Yeah Matthew 19:6 rings true to me.

Why does a title like this in the Family Forum always smack of someone trying to get out of a marriage, so they can move onto their next fling?

Yes, all marriages are joined by God, even if they are atheists. Does that help?

Mark 10:7-8

For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.' So they are no longer two, but one flesh.

Yes there is unless Y-shua did not know what He was talking about.

Now thats funny I have to beg the difference not all marriages, because if so why do people divorce or should I say why the divorce is extremly high?In the Christian community.
