That Stanford study that right wing media made a great deal of a week ago has come under a significant amount of criticism for the methods used (starting with trying to recruit participants with ads on Facebook).
This is not the flu. Facts we know: The observed mortality remains above 5%. Antibody testing has shown that only 13.9% of people in New York City have been exposed to the virus. Given the dense population there which always results in the rapid spread of infectious disease, the percentage in the rest of the country is going to be much lower. These are facts, not models or speculation.
The situation we are in right now is similar to catching glimpses of a pack of wolves through the trees as the run along side you in the forest. The attack has not yet begun. Unfortunately some insist on saying “cute puppies!” When faced with the threat.
You need radomized sampling, if you don't like Facebook as a recruitment tool what would you suggest....science isn't about a vote, its about evidence.
As for infection rates, they've done testing on people who've had a confirmed case of the virus and found no antibodies....so equating an absence of antibodies as an indicator that people haven't been infected is obviously flawed.
Nobody is calling coronavirus "cute puppies", but your wolf analogy is pretty apt...overwhelmingly its attacking the old and weak, which is what wolf hunting a herd of caribou do....
We're sacrificing way too much for very little benefit in my opinion....freedom of assembly, gone, freedom to practise religion in the manner you desire, gone.....we've got brown shirted snitch lines now.....is freedom of speech next? Some would proably applaud it....this isn't the first attack on basic rights and liberties in history sadly, and too often it doesn't end well.
If you're scared....okay, be scared....lock yourself in your house and don't come out until a vaccine is available.....have your grocercies delivered and wipe packaging and contacts down with lysol if you want.....
