Okay, weird title, let me elaborate.
I have been married 7years and am recently separated (it sucks, and I don't want to talk about it) but, during this time, I've got to thinking.
I've been looking at the biblical definition of marriage, of what God desired when He instituted the marriage of a man and a woman, and how many of us, as Christians seem to be getting it all wrong.
In searching through the 'what if's' of my personal situation, and looking at the past trying to figure out where it all went wrong, I reflected upon the relationships of other couples I know as comparisons, and I discovered a startling revelation.
LOTS of CHRISTIAN marriages fail. Why is that? If God himself instituted marriage, and we are followers of God, and we know what the word says, then why is it so hard?
I wonder not only what this does to us, but what it does, and how it looks to outsiders; particularly non-christians. We preach and teach on 'waiting on God for our spouse, on the sanctity of marriage, on the evils of permarital sex, on the roles of men and women etc etc'. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not condemning any of these things, but isn't it a little, say, ironic that we KNOW how God designed marriage, that we have a 'blueprint' if you will, for the perfect marriage in front of us, and yet we still can't get it right??
I find this astounding, particularly when I look at non-christian couples whom we might consider to be in a 'wordly' relationship, and are actually in a very loving, supportive, monogamous relationship. I know many couples who may have different ideals on what constitutes a 'relationship' to what I do. I know couples who have lived together before marriage, even having all of their children together before marrying and still to this day, are in happy, healthy marriages. Now, I know Gods plan is best, and I know it's right, and I know the dangers of doing things 'our way', and I understand the spiritual aspect is a far deeper element in all of that. But, isn't it interesting that even when we think we're doing everything 'right', that things still don't work.
So, my question is... what are we doing wrong? Is it a lack of commitment? Are we just not taking the sanctity of marriage seriously? Do we not really understand what it means to love someone, to CHOOSE to love someone - unconditionally? Do we rush into marriage not really understanding the vow we make? Is it all too hard, so we just give up? Are we so scared of being alone, and consumed with 'lust' that we just marry for the wrong reasons? WHAT??? WHAT is wrong?
Why are so many Christian marriages failing? Why do we find it so hard to be be an example in this area? Why are so many of us 'trapped' in unloving marriages, with spouses who aren't committed?
Any thoughts??
