It's funny how you can have a feeling of getting closer to the Lord only to fall off minutes after that sentiment. It not exactly funny; it is disheartening. Though I believe in it, the doctrine of perseverance of those who believe is a faulty confidence. How can one know if one is truly saved in the first place? Did not the man who said "Lord, Lord" also have a great assurance of his faulty salvation? You may say "well, I have examined myself and bear witness to the fruit of the Spirit." O, didn't the man who was cast into perdition also claim a life of great works? You may not like the use of the term "works" but in essence that is what you're basing your examination upon. I'm convinced then that our assurance can not be based on feeling of our own but in the work of Christ. Faith in that work alone, or should I say, a hope in what it accomplished. This is true in that although our works (or lack thereof) are telling indicators of our spiritual state, I can say from the "many" who say "lord" who don't know the Father, this method is prone to misinterpretation being liable to biased and an subjective sense of what constitutes as spirituality.

Sorry for taking up space with no useful insight except to say:

It is indeed the most peculiar of dilemmas isn't it?
Jacob's struggle.

A person can have assurance of their salvation, not by looking at their works but, by looking at the works done in them while they were being separated and saved.

You are already the evidence. Your heart is changed and you and the people closest to you know it. You have wisdom and knowledge of the Lord Jesus that was closed to you before. And if you have any questions you just go to the One who saves you and ask Him.

A person can't have assurance by looking back to the Law to see how well they are doing. If you think you have attained the height of that measuring stick then you have not gained wisdom and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ, you contradict the words of the bible given to us and you fool the one person it is important not to fool, yourself.

There is only one way to salvation. That is by the Lord Jesus Christ. The only way to "measure" your salvation is to know how much the Lord Jesus Christ loves you. You know He Loves You, right?? That is assurance...

Feelings are just your body responding to what God is doing. God lets/makes them go away, so you will not depend on how your body feels to advance in your closeness to Him. Grandpa has it right. If you weren't changed already, you wouldn't even care to ask the question. That's the proof right there.

Yup, amen, there is one needful thing to have assurance.

King James Version Luke 10:42 42 But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

Matthew 7:21-23

21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’

Notice what these people are claiming, their works. I think of Judas Iscariot whenever I read this. He did all these things while with Jesus, but he didn't do the one thing that mattered most, repent whole heartedly and grab hold of the mercy and grace available to him through the cross in real faith. I think the question we should be asking daily is "Father, what is your will for me?" ...Part of that answer is simply to trust in Him and obey.

Our relationship with God is not based on 'feelings' but rather solid conviction that we are sinners and by faith that our sins are cleanse as white as snow once we confessed them and by faith that God will restore us.

the man who cried lord lord put his faith in his works and not in the Lord if you put your faith in the Lord you will have works but your faith will be in the LORD
