I was impressed that one of my students in Scholars' Bowl this year knew the poem and could recite the first few lines. A lot of times, the older poems are neglected in school. He told me he read it on his own.

I don't know, but it seems like the Dodgers leaving Brooklyn was the most upsetting move in sports history for the fans of a team.

You really know your sports. Karim Abdul-Jabbar [formerly Lew Alcindor] said his dad was so upset about that move that he never recovered from the loss of his team. Same can be said for many other Dodgers fans as they were very loyal to the club.

I don't know sports AT ALL, lol. I know history, though. Do you think it was because it was Brooklyn, and Brooklynites felt like they were the underdogs? Willie Mays is from Alabama, and Hank Aaron is from Mobile. The minor league stadium here is named for Hank Aaron, and his childhood home was turned into a museum.

Officially, the first Base Ball (as it was spelled back then) game was played in 1839. However, amateur historians have said it was played in Brooklyn and Manhattan before then. In recent years a Harvard educated scholar found evidence that the game had been played between NYC Metro teams as far back as 1823. Despite all the disputes as to the game's actual origin, everyone agrees that Brooklyn was at the fore front of the game's beginning. People there are very passionate about the sport. Since they claim to have created it, the fact that their team - the one team that could rightfully claim to have been descended of the game's originators - had been stolen from them broke the hearts of many Brooklynites.

No, I'm not modest. I actually do not know much about sports, at all. But I like history. Thanks for telling me, and the link. I thought Brooklynites felt like they were working class, so being dumped on for that. I did not realize that baseball may have actually started in Brooklyn. No wonder they were upset. I am going to read the link. I really appreciate it.
