My kid's have this thing, they'll only eat Rold Gold brand pretzels. I have no idea why, but that's how they roll. Then I was thinking, I do the same thing but with Ketchup, I only buy Heinz. My Mom always bought Heinz, so that's what I buy.

I think that's how brands stick around, someone in the family always buys that particular brand so the tradition lives on. I used to only buy Ivory soap because that's what we always used but I switched to Dove because it doesn't dry my skin out, my Husband will not use Dove, he giggles and says it's girl soap, whatever. I used to only buy Tide because that's what we always used, but alas Tide is way to expensive so I switched to ALL and it works just as well.

Some brand names such as Heinz ketchup or Kraft mayo, are also marketed as the "store brand" of ketchup and mayo. Vermont's famous Cabot cheddar cheese, is also marketed as a store brand of cheese. So by buying the store brand of things, you're actually getting the brand name at a lower cost.

Folgers coffee.
Iams kitty food.
Angel Soft toilet paper.

Pretty much everything else I buy is Kroger brand. And my grocery budget still gets blown out of the water every month. It's weird how people like to eat regularly...the bums.

Oh wait, my flip flops are always L.L. Bean. But I don't actually buy those, so maybe that doesn't count.

I Know, who needs food? I will buy most things store brand, cereal, even my Dove soap is the store brand. I sometimes buy the Wegmans brand laundry soap, but for some reason it's more expensive than the ALL. I buy generic fabric softener And store brand food. But for some reason Heinz ketchup tastes best to me. A couple of weeks ago my Daughter got a packet of ketchup with fries and it just said, Fancy Ketchup, she said, sure doesn't taste fancy. I guess we're picky ketchup people.

Huh. I am really working to think if I have a particular brand loyalty. I don't think I do. Oh! For paper towels I do. I love Viva (I have to use paper towels for work, it's a regulation thing, otherwise I'd use cloth towels and wash them, but I can't.)

I have a hair product that I won't buy any other because it won't work the same, it's called, Not Your Mother's Sea Salt wave enhancer spray. It's not super expensive but when my hair is frizzy and nuts it really works to make it all wavy again.

When I was a kid I was a toy snob. The Hot Wheels cars I had were lined up on my bed. The Matchbox cars were left out in the yard to get run over by the lawn mower. I can't help it, hot wheels just felt like a better car. It rolled straight and felt more solid.

With some food, the store brand is just a batch of the name brands that didn't come out quite right. Walmart great value house brand of peanut butter is jif with another label. On the other hand, Walmart great value canned vegetables are nasty, nasty, very very nasty.

I prefer Moser Roth chocolate, the cheese from Aldi, Gold Medal flour for making my sourdough bread, Vibram or Merrell shoes, Sony Xperia phones (just as a matter of style preference,) and hamburgers made from real ground beef... Not those preformed patties or that so called ground beef from Walmart which cooks up really weird.

I have to agree on Heinz, it is definitely the best ketchup
I also don't like Coke, even though I like Pepsi. So, I guess I do have two brands that I stick to. Apart from those, I rarely if ever look at brand names when buying stuff.

Actually, I am happy using whatever brand I can get affordable except for a few things like feminine products, shampoo and conditioner(Tresemme), Pam Cooking Spray, margarine (Imperial or Blue Bonnet), Toll House Chocolate Chips, and a few others that I can't think of right away.

I don't stick to too many name brands usually. But, I consistently buy Country Crock margarine, just because it actually tastes like real butter to me. Usually though, whatever Aldi has is good for me.

What a fun thread . I'm almost afraid to post the brand names I insist on because I'm going to sound like a big product snob.

I'm absolutely fine with store-brand products whenever I can get away with them (who cares if that generic toilet paper feels more like sandpaper, it does the job, right?!) but there are a few things I refuse to skimp on:

* KRAFT boxed mac and cheese. Yeah, I know some people who like gourmet food will balk at this one but I love boxed mac'n'cheese and it's just gotta be KRAFT. Store brands taste like medicine to me (which I'm sure some will say about the Kraft version as well.) I've made my own mac'n'cheese and would you believe, I still like the good old blue box better?

*A-1 Steak Sauce. My Mom tried slipping me the store brand stuff and while it wasn't bad... it just. wasn't. good old. A-1.

* I often cut corners in some places (the aforementioned toiler paper, for example) in order to buy slightly more expensive things that just work better. Vo5 hair conditioner may cost a dollar, but it's like pouring water on my hair and does absolutely nothing to soften or tame it, so I've upgraded to Loreal (and because I had a coupon.) I've also found that Jergen's lotion works well for me--anything else is a waste because I have to use twice as much of it.

* Tide laundry detergent. My baby! I have extremely sensitive skin, and have found out I can't use anything but Tide, which is what my pediatrician recommended to my Mom when I was a kid. As an adult, I tried to cheat and use Arm & Hammer unscented, supposedly for sensitive skin, but found out the hard way it just doesn't work. I broke out in a fire-red rash--3 days I was supposed to be in a wedding with a dress that exposed my neck and shoulders, which were now flaming red. Even Tide with a scent doesn't cause me to have a reaction like that.

Fortunately, chugging half a bottle of Benadryl calmed it down to looking more like a very mild sunburn just in time... And I will never stray from my trusty old Tide ever again.

It's the fat content in the beef that make them cook weird. If you want a yummy and tender hamburger, then you want a higher fat content burger. At least 27%, but more like 35% or 40%.


I always buy Heinz ketchup, Best Foods Mayo, Canadian Dry Gingerale, Tillamook or Kraft cheese, and there are probably others. I buy the bulk of my groceries at Winco, which is a big box store. I buy their brand of milk, their ground beef, crackers, and most of their produce. However, I do not buy the majority of my meat there. I'll go to Raley's or Savemart for that. It's just a better quality. A friend of mine is a butcher at Raley's, so I know things are cut well and sanitary.

LOL, do any of you test your produce before you buy it? For instance, smelling oranges, mellons, tasting grapes, squeezing heads of lettuce, alvocados, etc? People look at me like I've lost my mind! I'm not just going to pick up random produce! I'm a proper French/Italian woman who was taught how to do things right.

Exactly! I have surmised someone is actually tasting the stuff they stock before they decide to stock it. Everything Aldi carries is good.

JUICE: For 100% juice (the only thing I'll drink besides water, everything else just tastes like sugar) the beat-all best is Old Orchard dark grape juice. The label looks fairly generic but it tastes far sweeter and stronger than Welch's, Juicy Juice (which is grossly mislabeled according to my taste buds) or anything else I've tried. We found it at a chain department store called Fred's.

BATTERIES: Advance Auto Parts has a house brand, red and white, that costs about half as much as Energizer or Duracel and lasts (as near as I can tell) longer.

EARBUDS: JVC marshmallow earbuds. Finally, a pair of earbuds that fit my ears AND sound good! Believe it or else these $10 earbuds sound excellent (this is coming from me, an audiophile) and they block out outside noise like earplugs. I put one ear in, leave one ear out so I can still interface with the real world and I'm good to go. I was using a set just today at work, while putting the truck order up.

SKIN MOISTURIZER: (I can't believe I'm recommending a Wal-Mart house brand...) Equate skin moisturizer is (imo) better than current Vaseline Intensive Care formula. Actually Equate's is exactly like Vaseline's used to be.

I might be forgetting something. So... anyone else got a product you really like, that we probably would never try on our own?

If you like LITTLE DEBBIE SWISS CAKE ROLLS, the try the GREAT VALUE BRAND from WM. They cost .50 cheaper per box, and they taste SO much better!

But! Steer clear of the GV Fudge brownies, another LB knockoff...they are NASTY! Nothing like the real ones.
