Absalom set Amasa over the army in place of Joab. Now Amasa was the son of a man who's name was Ithra the Isrealite, who went into Abigail the daughter of Nahash, sister of Zeruiah, Joab's mother.

If it had to be pointed out who excactly this guy was and that there was some connection to Joab, it must be at least somewhat important.
 
It sounds to me like Absalom has a blood line He greatly trusted :)
