In the Bible, God has given us the quickest and best path to understanding which is obedience ... If the young man would have been obedient to God in the first place then he would have been gifted with the understanding without having to go through a bad experience and utilize his critical thinking ... It is like falling into a pit ... If you listen to God in the first place and do not fall into the pit then you do not have to figure your way out of it, now do you ? ... God has given us the best advice ... I am sorry but no human is going to improve upon that advice ... Not you, not I, and not anyone else ...
 
Okay.

Suppose that a father instructs his 7 year old child, NOT to stick a fork into an electrical socket in the wall.

And the child obeys.

Obedience leads to Understanding right?

At what point will the child receive Understanding as to why he/she should not do that?
 
If the child obeys, God will provide him with the understanding without having to get shocked ... God will provide the child with the understanding in His own time ... There is no need for you to worry about when that might take place ... God promises to protect those who obey Him and that is precisely what He will do ... You cannot win this argument my friend, because you are arguing with the word of God ... You are no longer arguing any point with me ... You keep giving earthly examples to support your views, while I have provided you with the word of God ... Your earthly examples cannot hold a candle to the power of God ... I suggest you move on to something else ...

And what possible ways will God provide him with the understanding?

Can you describe to me even One way?

I can describe to you several possible ways the boy could receive that understanding ... God could use the boys father to explain it to him at a later date, the boy could learn about electricity in a classroom from a teacher, God could have the boy see the reasoning on television, etc ... God could get the understanding across to the child in any one of a million different ways ... There is nothing God cannot do ... All you need to know is that if the boy obeys then the understanding is guaranteed to come to him ... You don't need to worry about how exactly God is going to provide that understanding ... And I am not confident in my reasoning ... What I am extremely confident in is the word of God ...
 
I strongly suggest you read the book of Solomon, the wisest of all kings, and see how he obtained his great knowledge ... He did not gain it through experience ... He did not gain it through critical thinking ... He gained it by being obedient to God and praying for it ... God asked Solomon what he wanted and Solomon asked for great knowledge and understanding ... When God saw that Solomon did not ask for wealth, a long life or many other earthly desires, but instead requested wisdom, God promised that he would be the wisest king to ever walk the earth ... God gifted Solomon unsurpassed knowledge and understanding right there on the spot ... And God promises to gift all people that obey Him with much knowledge and understanding ... Those things are a gift that God gives, they are not something which humans gain by themselves ... This is a crucial step in understanding ... To first understand where it comes from ...

PROVERBS 2:6

“For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.”

The Bible clearly states that God "gives" wisdom ... People do not obtain it by themselves no matter how hard they try ... There is no guarantee that experience will produce wisdom ... There is no guarantee that thinking will produce wisdom ... But God does guarantee wisdom to those who obey Him ... Therefore, it is obedience that produces knowledge and understanding ... They are gifts that God gives as a reward for obedience unto Him ... That is how the Bible says they are obtained, so that must be how they are obtained ...

In every instance that you have described, Explanation has been involved in the boys Understanding.

Are you able to give me an example where Obedience leads to Understanding, where NO Explanation, or Experience or Critical Thinking is required to gain that Understanding?
 
Are you serious my friend ... Who do you think is working through someone when they explain anything to another person ... That is God doing that work ... It is not the person themselves ... God is the one providing that answer ... Just as when a preacher helps you to understand something ... It is not he, the man, doing that ... It is God doing that through the man ... You are here on a Christian site, yet you seem to want to believe that people do everything ... You really need to back up and work on your foundation ... The obedience IS what leads to understanding ... God uses several ways to get that understanding across to those who obey Him ... If you need for me to explain any further to you what the Bible clearly states, then you are demonstrating a clear lack of faith ... You are giving yourself and people way too much credit and not giving God nearly enough ... I have done my very best to pass along God's message to you ... There is nothing more I can say to help you understand where wisdom comes from ... I gave you the exact words of the Bible ... That is the very best that I can do ...

Not sure why your trying to put words into my mouth. I haven't indicated, even once, that what is spoken through people does not come from God. Or that people deserve credit over God whatsoever. You just seem to be a little panicked in trying to evade my inevitable point. Which is:

Yes it says that Obedience comes before Understanding. But, Explanation and/or Experience also come before Understanding. It may not be mentioned like that in the bible, But neither is it mentioned in the bible that there are about 10,000 different types of birds that exist on the earth as well. Yet both are true. It just takes common sense and critical thinking to understand.

Otherwise give us an example where explanation or experience is not required to gain Understanding. Shouldn't be too difficult, should it?
 
Pure“obidience“ doesnt lead to understanding. It leads to brainwashed people who will have no mind of their own growing up and jumping at anyones command.jeez where did common sense go
We dont need indoctrinated zombies who may just end up rebelling even worse, as thats what would happen. We need ppl to ubderstand why and what actions are wrong and if u do whats wrong it will have consequences

I've read this thread, and personally I'm fed up with all the unbiblical answers, & don't think giving a biblical one will make any difference.

That is a false statement ... You cannot say what or how God must do something ... He can accomplish anything He wishes in a blink of an eye ... Have you not learned that from your Bible ? ... I guess not ... You seem to believe that God needs to follow your earthly path of understanding in order to accomplish something ... There are no limitations on the Maker Himself ... If one is obedient to Him, He can give that person knowledge and understanding in a heartbeat if He so chooses ... He can work through another to deliver it or He can choose to deliver it Himself ... He is not bound by your logic and your reasoning kaijo ... He is the Almighty and there are no boundaries to what He can do ...

Luke 11:28 But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!” (Jesus speaking)

Obedience is the key to all understanding ... When the LORD promises to bless those who obey Him, do you really believe one of those blessings will not be great understanding ? ... I cannot make you to believe anything kaijo ... I can only give you the truth as it is written ... If you truly think about it, I believe you will understand it ... Better yet, if you just trust the word of God, you will understand it much quicker ... All you really need to understand is the verse above ... It proves that "obedience" is the key to God's blessings and two of those blessings are knowledge and understanding ...

Also I may add to talk to your child. Ask them what they've seen and don't be scared to talk to them about it.

Psalm 23:4b "Your rod and your staff, they comfort me"

If the "rod" indicates physical punishment, why is it an instrument of comfort? Maybe there is more to this "rod of discipline" than first meets the eye.
 
I think that now is a good time to ponder whay is meant by:

1 Cor 10:22-23
22 Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?
23 All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.

Certainly you do not want your son watching porn; and you shouldn't.

IMO anger and punishment are NOT the answer.

If we truly believe that Jesus died to forgive our sins and his; then how can ee punish what Jesus died to forgive.

IMO Christian discipline should be employed to help a child remember to do right; NOT to punish wrongdoing.

Another factor to consider:

If you punish him, you may well persuade him not to play porn on your computer and also persuade him to turn elsewhere for answers to his questions.

If you treat this as a remarkably cleaver way to satisfy his curiosity [which it is indeed]; instead of something heinous, and let him know you will help him find more godly ways to satisfy his curiosity: you may accomplish far more [in building the relationship you want with your son] than punishment could possibly achieve.
 
Show me in the Bible where it states not to discipline a child for doing wrong and I will show you 10 places where it states to do exactly that ... Are we going by the Bible here ? ... Or are we just going with our own opinions ? ... I believe it is pretty clear which is the better advice ...
 
No where in the bible does it say anything of that, but you don't keep beating him for things he haven't done, or the wrong things he does not know about, but instead ,you teach him. Beating a child over and over to the point that it cannot take it anymore is breaking his spirit,and he could go off on you and loose his mine.
